HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 28th FEBRUARY 1988

It’s time for a long overdue and complete overhaul at the top of the chart this week as Vanessa Paradis steers Joe Le Taxi to number one, to become only the second non-English song to hit the top of this Retro-Chart (the first being Rock Me Amadeus by Falco in April 1986)

With a margin of just a single point, Vanessa has the dubious honour of registering the lowest points tally for a chart-topper since Madonna hit number one with Crazy For You in June 1985 with just 114 points. There’s still no stopping the ladies though with Vanessa now becoming the fourth consecutive female artist to top the chart.

Bomb the Bass move up to number two although their points total for house anthem Beat Dis has barely changed week-on-week.

There are a couple of nice climbs into the Top Five as Belinda Carlisle follows up her recent number one Heaven Is A Place On Earth. I Get Weak moves up to number three to become this week’s biggest climber of 16 places along with Mel and Kim who move up to number 16 with That’s The Way It Is.

The Primitives also Crash into the Top Five, up 13 places to number four.

Highest new entry see the return of Erasure as Ship Of Fools casts its anchor alongside a re-entry from Heart with Never, already earning itself a new peak at number 22.

Another wave of fantastic entries into the chart and it's straight into number one for my favourite ballad from Whitney Houston.  I'll never understand how the two amazing ballads that were released as singles from the Whitney album both fell short of the Top Ten here.  Still, I think WDBHG benefits from not being as over-exposed as some of her other songs.

In early 1988, it was released as the fourth single from the album in New Zealand and Australia, while "In God's Country" was released as the fourth single in North America. The release charted at number one on the New Zealand singles chart & Australia #10. The track was written in memory of Greg Carroll, a Māori the band met during The Unforgettable Fire Tour in 1984. He became very close friends with lead singer Bono and served as a roadie for the group. Carroll was killed in July 1986 in a motorcycle accident in Dublin. Following the funeral in New Zealand, Bono wrote the lyrics to "One Tree Hill", which he dedicated to Carroll. The lyrics reflect Bono's thoughts at the funeral and pay homage to Chilean activist Victor Jara. Musically, the song was developed in a jam session with producer Brian Eno. The vocals were recorded in a single take, as Bono felt incapable of singing them a second time.

Took Madness and Simply Red from outside the top 40. Madness were supposed to have split in 1986 but released a single in 1988 as "The Madness" just to make sure but it flopped.

As for this one, it got quite a bit of airplay. Similar to "The Right Thing", and have no idea why it flopped.
