The highest new entry is Abba with their Eurovision-winning song. There are more Eurovision songs on the next playlist as Gigliola Cinquetti and Mouth & MacNeal both peaked at #8 with their entries that came 2nd and 3rd - note our own entry which came joint 4th only reached #11 in the UK singles chart. The voting appears to be that 10 panelists gave a point to their favourite but not sure if there was a cap of 5. In any case 5 of our panelists voted for Italy (and I can understand why) and none of them for Abba. Gigliola Cinquetti has reached the UK top 20 before way back in 1964, whilst Mouth & MacNeal had a US top 10 hit which also reached the top 5 here just 2 years ago.
For Abba, however, this is their debut entry, after which we have David Bowie. But then Peters And Lee followed by The Osmonds... Oh well...

When I compile a chart on the same date of the year as that of the chart, I normally then listen to that chart. Actually it isn't just on the same date, but if the current date of the year is in the week. On this occasion though the chart of 27 April 1974 is being posted on 27 April 2020.
Abba fly up to #1 but watch out for 2 huge songs next week.
Entering this week: a Bay City Rollers song that reached #2. Just before lockdown we had a 1975 theme at a Purim party and I got an outfit that resembled the Bay City Rollers. When it came to iconic appearances they were definitely there. That the same week that a song about a man wearing no clothes makes its way into this chart. Voted by Haven as the worst #1 of 1974 Ray Stevens' wit hits us again, only this time he annoyed a lot of people by getting to UK #1 and also US #1. Only for 1 week though, and it's not that bad really. My favourite Ray Stevens song though is Mr Businessman. And he's even above Wizzard, who some say Abba copied with their Eurovision hit. In between all those is Stevie Wonder, and you'll be familiar with this song possibly because Incognito covered it in the 1990s.
No place for Earth Wind & Fire yet though. Fantasy will be in the chart around the same time as Just The Way You Are. And September the same time as My Life.

-- ( -- ) For The Love Of Money - O'Jays -- ( -- ) I'm In Love - Aretha Franklin
May the 4th be with you.
A big week for entries: Sparks land in at #2 with their classic and Wings' most definitive song enters at #5 and there is a strong chance that both of these will spend some time at #1, which means their runs will be shorter than you might expect and there is quite a high turnover of #1s at the moment.
We also have entries for the songs that finished 2nd and 3rd in Eurovision. They have both had a single out before but Gigliola Cinquetti didn't chart with "Non Ho L'eta Per Amarti" on 25 April 1964, 10 years and one week ago, in a week that had Roy Orbison as the highest entry with "It's Over" and The Fourmost enter with "A Little Loving". Whereas 2 years ago Mouth & MacNeal reached #6 with "How Do You Do". However it is the Italian who gets the higher entry this week. In fact it enters in a higher position than Abba did two weeks ago, but with those two big entries above it is unlikely to get higher than #3.
Meanwhile the Rubettes who at this point session musicians with Paul DaVinci as lead singer, enter at #17, as only the 5th highest entry. In the UK it entered at #27 then leapt to #2 before spending 4 weeks at #1 keeping Sparks off the top.
Paper Lace reached #1 in the USA with their follow-up to "Billy Don't Be A Hero" which itself was a US #1 in a cover version. That song reached #7 on this chart and we'll have to see how their new single does.

I was just thinking how in the UK chart "A Little Peace" by Nicole entered at #8 then spent 2 weeks at #1 then fell to #4. In my chart Abba who also was a foreign Eurovision winner entered at #8 then 2 weeks at #1 but has fallen to #3. However it only just about finished above Gigliola Cinquetti this week. 70's music may have gone so differently had Gigliola actually won the Eurovision song contest. Would Abba have become big anyway?
Anyway more classics I'm sure you know: Judy Teen and There's A Ghost In My House... I didn't even think of 1974 as a great year for music but there we go...

My "covers" policy is going to hit Showaddywaddy as so many of their future hits reached my chart in their original versions, but their debut hit was actually one of their own songs so they're in the chart this time. "Under The Moon Of Love", whilst a cover version, was never a hit previously for Curtis Lee so it could chart for them.
Not that Cliff Richard is not a cover version and not even sure why it has that title as he never sings You Keep Me Hangin' On he sings "just enough to keep me hangin' on".

Wings get to #1 again, the third time, replacing Sparks. It was a clash of giants, but we'll see how long Wings gets on top as Alan Price flies in at #4. He had two #1s as a member of the Animals and subsequently went solo and had a few hits, reaching #2 together with Georgie Fame on "Rosetta" in 1971. The new song though has a political edge to it, referring back to the Jarrow March of 1936.
We also have a new entry for the Arrows, the band who did the original "I Love Rock And Roll", and defying the covers rule, Bryan Ferry enters with a cover of a song that was previously a hit for Dobie Gray. Normally I expect the cover to be better, but it's unlikely Bryan Ferry which match the #3 peak of Dobie Gray's version in 1965.

-- ( -- ) Another Park Another Sunday - Doobie Brothers -- ( -- ) On And On - Gladys Knight & The Pips -- ( -- ) Son Of Sagittarius - Eddie Kendricks
Second week at #1 for Wings and their previous number ones both spent 2 weeks on top and with the double threat now from Alan Price and Elton John this one may end up the same way - it didn't help that it took a while to dislodge Sparks who entered the same week.
That "Sugar Baby Love" stalled at #9 is showing how good the charts are this year. Earlier in the year "Rebel Rebel" only peaked at #6.
I am finding that on the whole the big stars of 1973 are failing to deliver to the same standard in 1974 but we have other great songs.

Must have been one of the strongest Eurovision's ever - the top 3 songs were all great and worthy of the top 10.

Must have been one of the strongest Eurovision's ever - the top 3 songs were all great and worthy of the top 10. I don't know if the fact it was hosted in the UK helped, but yes the 2nd and 3rd placed single both reaching #8 in the UK chart is strange. The Eurovision year that produced the biggest number of hits in my chart was 2010 but that is partly because I threw many of them onto my playlist due to the way I compiled it at the time. Josh Dubovie or whatever his name was failed to make the cut that year. Olivia Newton John was way behind the top 3 for me this year too. For Mouth & MacNeal it's their 2nd hit on this chart and both of them peaked at #6.

Marked as his first #1 but he also got to #1 with the Animals. There was never a doubt in my mind this would be #1, it was only delayed to let Wings get two weeks on top as well as Sparks.
There are more great songs about to enter next week - a whole pile of them in fact.
Steely Dan had two #2 hits, and "Reelin' In The Years" was the biggest single of 1973 not to get to #1 and possibly should have got there. Their new one is another classic by them.
Sideshow is a soul song that was given a reggae-style cover and was a big hit for Barry Biggs in that format. It seems the sure-fire way to get a hit is to take a soul song from this era and do it reggae style.

-- ( -- ) Rock & Roll Heaven - Righteous Brothers
This is some week for new entries. 3 of them were UK #1s.
The highest entry was written by John Carter and his wife - he was a successful songwriter in the 1960s - and the lead singer is Tony Burrows. It has a sample of Sibelius's 5th symphony, which was also used by Strawberry Switchblade later in their hit "Since Yesterday". In addition right at the end it has a sample of "Let's Go To San Francisco" in it but John Carter wrote that too. It's a classic song and I'm shocked it only reached #13 in the UK
Whilst Gary Glitter, who is way below his standards of last year, got to #1. Still better than Gary Glitter's last single but I have said all of last year's heroes have not been as strong this year.
Other entries that were UK #1s from John Denver and George McCrae, and "Annie's Song" was covered only 4 years later as an instrumental by James Galway whilst "Rock The Boat" was covered only 9 years later by Forrest.

-- ( -- ) Easy Easy - Scotland World Cup Squad
After last week's incredible set of entries and the last playlist as a whole, I don't know what happened suddenly but the most recent playlist has shown a severe drop to me, and Neil Sedaka's highest entry this week was the best song on it.
Charles Aznavour is yet another UK #1 to enter but his ballad just about scrapes into my chart on a slightly worse score than the Righteous Brothers had last week when they failed to get in.
As for the Scotland world cup squad, they may get a mention after the next chart when I run through the sporting events, but it's generally about the winners and runners up and they were neither.
Alan Price remains a 3rd week at #1, it's the first single to manage that since "W.O.L.D" by Harry Chapin which was followed by 4 singles all spending 2 weeks on top, and was also preceded by two 2-week number ones. "Tiger Feet" by Mud is the only single to have managed 4 weeks on top so far this year.

Alan Price spends a 4th week at number one, the joint longest of the year. Again no real challenges from new entries and I'm not expecting any. Its replacement is more likely to be something in the chart now or from the next playlist, the latter would mean it gets at least 6 weeks at #1 if the next one flies straight in on top.
Jim Croce gets another posthumous hit. It sounds nothing like the Rose Royce song of course.

Sporting Winners in 1974
Back in 1974 they were able to play professional sport and complete tournaments.
Football
I always start with football and the English league, in which Leeds United became champions again having won the title in 1969 then being runners up 3 years in a row behind different teams and 3rd in 1973. Don Revie was their manager but would leave to take over the England job from Alf Ramsey after England didn't qualify for the World Cup (which we will come to soon). Liverpool finished 2nd but won the FA Cup beating Newcastle in the final 3-0. Wolves won the League Cup beating Manchester City 2-1 in the final. Notably though a disastrous season for Manchester United who got relegated.
The European Cup Final was between Bayern Munich and Athletico Madrid. It was 0-0 after normal time, Athletico took the lead in the second half of extra time but Bayern Munich equalised in the last minute of extra time. They didn't do penalties, instead they did a replay 2 days later and this time Bayern Munich won easily 4-0.
The Cup-Winners Cup was won by East German team Magdeburg against AC Milan 2-0.
The UEFA Cup was not won by a German team but by Feyernoord winning on aggregate against Tottenham Hotspur over two legs. Spurs were twice in front at home but pegged back to 2-2, and in the second leg Feyernoord won 2-0.
In Scotland Celtic won the title with Hibernian in second place, and Celtic did the double winning the Scottish Cup final 3-0 against Dundee United. The Scottish League Cup final of 1974 was played later in the year but Celtic beat Hibernian in that too - must have been an exciting game, 6-3.
The World Cup finals took place in West Germany and the host nation won, beating The Netherlands 2-1 in the final. Scotland qualified but couldn't get through the first round in spite of 1 win and 2 draws, as everybody beat Zaire but Scotland, Yugoslavia and Brazil all drew with each other. Scotland beat Zaire by the lowest score of the three. England, as I mentioned before, failed to qualify with Poland qualifying in their place. Having got there, Poland did very well in the contest finishing 3rd.
Tennis
Jimmy Connors was the star of the year beating Ken Rosewall 6-1 6-1 6-4 in the Wimbledon final and 6-1 6-0 6-1 in the US Open final.
In Women's singles Chris Evert beat Olga Morozova, 6–0, 6–4 at Wimbledon Billie Jean King beat Evonne Goolagong 3–6, 6–3, 7–5 at the US Open.
That means all American winners, and mostly Australian runners-up although Olga Morozova was Russian (or Soviet as she would have been called then).
Baseball
Oakland Athletics beat L.A. Dodgers by 4 games to 1, the winners coming from the American League.
American Football
The 8th Superbowl was won by the Miami Dolphins 24-7 against the Minnisota Vikings
Snooker
In what was called the 1974 Park Drive World Snooker Championship, Ray Reardon was the champion winning 22-12 against Graham Miles. The latter however did win Pot Black.
Boxing
I don't normally bring boxing into this but 1974 is a special year, as it was the year that Mohammed Ali won the "Rumble in the Jungle" match against George Foreman in Zaire to regain the heavyweight boxing title.

-- ( -- ) Fish Ain't Bitin' - Lamont Dozier
Alan Price spends a 5th week at #1, longer than any other so far this year and the longest run on top since "Life On Mars" by David Bowie last year. There are no signs of anything ready to take over, and so this looks like a long-runner.

Now 6 weeks for Alan Price, the first single to stay this long at the top since Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" at the turn of 1972-73. War also enter the chart this week but Eric Burdon is not a member at this point in time.
The bigger issue is whether Abba can get a second number one as they get the highest entry this week at #9, one place lower than Waterloo entered. "Ring Ring" was actually released originally a year ago in their own country in Swedish, and Neil Sedaka, who is #3 this week, helped with the translation into English.
The Three Degrees reached #1 in the UK with "When Will I See You Again", with 1974 seemingly turning into a soul-fest with "Rock Your Baby" also having reached the top and "Rock The Boat" doing well.
The Rufus entry at #27 is indeed with Chaka Khan. In the USA "Ain't Nobody" wasn't even that big a hit, but she'd had a solo hit in the UK with "I'm Every Woman" in 1978 so when she appeared on that song I guess it was a familiar name here.

The English Language 'Ring Ring' had originally been released, in the UK, in October 1973. It failed to Chart. The 1974 version was a Remix - with a lot of Sax added. ABBA had wanted to release 'Honey Honey', as the UK follow-up to 'Waterloo'. Epic Records insisted, that it was better, to release the Remixed 'Ring Ring'. ABBA did so, and it stalled at No.32. In the meantime, The Male/Female Duo, Sweet Dreams, released a cover of 'Honey Honey'. It reached No.10 in the UK. ABBA were furious, that Epic had told them 'Ring Ring' would be a bigger UK Hit.

"Jarrow Song" by Alan Price becomes the 3rd single of the 70s to stay at the top for 7 weeks following "Question" by the Moody Blues and "American Pie" by Don McLean. In the 1960s this happened just once, "Like A Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan. In the 1950s it happened so far with the joyful swing song "You Can't Be True To Two" by Dave King & The Keynotes in 1956, however that one is unlikely to make any "all time chart" I would produce. During the 2010s it happened just once, "Time Of My Life" by Lost Van Goghs.
Andy Kim has been in the chart before, "How We Ever Get This Way" reached #10 and "Shoot 'Em Up Baby" #25 both in 1968. He also co-wrote the Archies hit "Sugar Sugar" and sang backing vocals on it. But "Rock Me Gently" is his best known song.
Johnny Bristol's song "Hang On In There Baby" was also covered in 1992 by Curiosity and the other famous song he wrote is on my current playlist.
"Born With A Smile On My Face" was written by Simon May who would write songs for TV. Perhaps unfortunately one of those songs would be "Every Loser Wins". Sparks enter at #20 having entered at #2 with their last single, which in the UK was kept out by the singer who enters a place lower when he was in the Rubettes.
Sweet Dreams here is not the UK 1983 Eurovision group but Polly Brown from Pickettywitch. There is a Eurovision connection though - this song is a cover of Abba, who are now world famous. In the UK this actually got higher than Abba's "Ring Ring".

Abba replace Alan Price at #1.
Meanwhile Eric Clapton's cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff" enters at #8 - Bob Marley hasn't yet had a hit but another of his songs has previously charted when "Stir It Up" was a hit for Johnny Nash.
Mud's song "Rocket" was covered by the Wedding Present as one of their B-sides, actually the single that is #1 18 years after this chart.
One of the biggest stars of my other retro chart, currently at the start of 1958, has a new entry this week. In 1974 Paul Anka is only 33 and has achieved much but "You're Having My Baby" is a very corny song and only just about scrapes in. Go and have a look at my charts around 1957-58, he's doing a lot better over there.

Eric Clapton becomes the main threat to Abba. He reached #2 as part of The Yardbirds with "For Your Love" and Cream with "I Feel Free", but has also had a #1 with "Layla" by Derek & The Dominoes.
The highest new entry provokes the reaction "I Love Rock 'N' Roll". Never got a chance to play it at Haven Factor and I didn't even do enough research to know we'd had a Rolling Stones rate in the past so could have picked songs from that. Still "Paint It Black" should have won the sing-off. From this chart Abba and T Rex have also been Haven Factor artists.
