Generally this week is considered the Christmas chart and for the 3rd year in a row there is a Christmas song at the top. Next year Greg Lake will be there but will be competing with Queen of course and so it may end up at #2 like it did in the UK chart.
One more chart after this and I'll have the chart of the year, which I will be listening to over Sunday and maybe a bit beyond.

The final chart of 1974 - I will create the chart of the year in time to listen to it tomorrow. I have been listening to the first playlist of 1975 this week, and it's a year that has a strong start.
Billy Joel adds to the contenders to take over at #1 with a song about being in the music industry. It's the second song of that title this year, the other being Scott Joplin's theme, but this is a completely different (and original) song.
Similarly "Best Of My Love" is not the same song that the Emotions would later record, nor is "Fire" the same as either Crazy World Of Arthur Brown or the Pointer Sisters or anyone else I know of. And "Pick Up The Pieces" which is climbing is of course a funky mostly-instrumental tune, and no relation to Hudson Ford's hit.
However "Never Can Say Goodbye" is a cover of the Jackson Five hit, and this is the highest chart version. The Jackson Five peaked at #24 and the Communards' version #22 in 1987. So a #19 peak for Gloria Gaynor isn't massive but still better than those two.

Dana has a song out "now", i.e. January 1975. I expect Cold Cold Christmas to possibly reach my top 10 but it won't be #1.

Lena Zavaroni is a cute girl of 10 - actually a few weeks younger than my sister - and she was on Opportunity Knocks and sang this song and then it became a hit single for her. It's an old song from the 1920s but unfortunately I find her voice on it rather awful. I re-discovered Lena's version of "Ma" some months ago. It's not bad at all, but I prefer her follow-up single "Personality".

"Ma He's Making Eyes At Me" reached NM #8 in 1957-8 for Johnny Otis Show but the song is older than that. "Personality" reached #2 in my chart for Lloyd Price in 1959, and was my biggest hit that year that didn't reach #1, spending 4 weeks at #2.
