Another one for my birthday celebrations, I've made a note of various songs that bring back memories in my life, and I'm going to count them down A-Z. I do have 50, but I expect I may think of, or hear other ones that I may add in, but I will try and keep it as close to 50 as possible. First up a song from the early 80s, sounded gorgeous back then, and still sounds brilliant now, my daughter who loves the 80s prefers I ran, as it was in that film, but I hope I'm winning her over with this as well. Sadly I never had hair like the lead singer A Flock of Seagulls – Wishing (If I had a photograph of you)

Brilliant band, with a long list of superb songs, all sadly overlooked.
My personal AFOS Top 5:-
1. Transfer Affection (1983 #38) 2. It's Not Me Talking (1981 miss) 3. Wishing (1982 #10) 4. The More You Live The More You Love (1984 #25) 5. I Ran (1982 #43)
I think I've just revealed one of my future Haven Idol entries.

They'd be a great answer on Pointless for Grammy Winners of the 1980s. Best instrumental.
I think their reputation is improving over time. Mike Score's barnet tended to overshadow that they had some genuine tunes.

I was a huge fan of them back in 1982-1984, I actually bought this single when it was released.
I bought a greatest hits cd by them a while back, some great tracks on it.
My faves are Wishing, I Ran, Messages, Space Age Love Song, Telecommunication, The More You Live the More You Love.
I first saw them on The Tube in late 1982 I think, thought they stood out. They were great.

Personally, I think the 5 songs Shireblogger has listed is all the A Flock Of Seagulls one needs.
Right now, I've abandoned my Retro 1990 weekly charts ... A combination of it being far from a vintage year for music; and Working From Home on a laptop during the Coronavirus, and then coming online in the evening by literally moving from my kitchen to my spare bedroom upstairs is a bit of a chore ... and have had had the brainwave of doing something I've never got round to doing before ....
Filling up my a Spotify Playlist of 10,000 songs with my all time favourites ...
So being perverse I've started with the Official Chart Company's A-Z artists listing starting with the letter Z.

All of Eliminator, some of Afterburner, and a handful of other tracks => 0.2% of your list should be ZZ Top.

A Flock of Seagulls are interesting as they were around the whole of the 80s but I never realised how many good songs they had at the time. I only knew 'Wishing' and 'The More You Live' at the time. Then I heard 'I Ran' for what I thought was the first time on Yahoo/DotMusic and I totally remembered it and loved it more than any other not to mention GTA Vice City's influence

The problem with 1990 to 1993 especially is so many great songs didnt go top 75 and we only have limited records to go by to fill those gaps like old Chart Show clips and Discogs it's just too hard, I gave up half way through 1991. After 1993 you can get top 200 from various sources. I have since made a 3000 playlist for 90s as I just dont know which week many of the songs came out.

Blame or praise my parents for this. They had a huge record player, which I was allowed access to when I was about 12, so I used to look through all their albums and singles and play them, being extra careful not to scratch them of course. I remember my parents having the Arrival album, which I think this track is from? If not, I know I played the single to death as well. It was a close call between this song and Gimme Gimme a man after midnight, which I used to sing quite a bit!!! Abba – Super trouper

I found rateyourmusic pretty good for release dates but the 90s are super sketchy, often with my 90s retro chart I can find the month a song came out so I chart the song at the end of the month but it couldve came out 3 weeks earlier, I just put it down to even in my current chart some songs miss out for 2 or 3 weeks before entering so aligns well with what I do now. I didnt start buying singles until the 00s so it's not like I have anything to recreate. I wouldn't mind a source for a top 200, I'm in 1996 now and still some great tracks are missing the top 100

I can understand you playing both Arrival and the Super Trouper single to death. My brother got the ABBA albums in our household. I wouldn't know which of their tracks to pick for an iconics list. Dancing Queen is the obvious choice, but Mamma Mia is probably the one that connected with me first.

No need to apologise for ABBA, they have well over 20 excellent songs

Back to the 80s and me visiting my grandma and granddad in Mansfield on saturdays, they had 13 children, some of whom were still at home when we used to visit, but often out, and my uncle Allen had a record player, and I was allowed to play his songs, one of which was Antmusic, and I fell instantly in love with it, those drums!!! Granddad was ensconced in a darkened living room watching the horse racing, and if you went in there, you weren't allowed to utter a word. Those were the days, if he was in a good mood, he'd show you his racing pigeons!
Adam and the Ants – Antmusic

Another one of my dad's records that hooked me from the very first listen, and that voice just blows you away, classic.
Animals – House of the rising sun

The Animals were very different from many of the other mid-60s British rock bands. They sounded much earthier and more authentic. And their ability to re-interpret songs in new and interesting ways was a delight. A very good choice o.

This is very much a TOTP thing, one hit wonder, catchy beat, good hooks, and still sounds good today due to no overplaying.
Animotion – Obsession
