Each category had two bronze medallists - the result of a repechage tournament in which the four losing quarter-finalists fought with the two winners facing the two losing semi-finalists for the medals. It's no big surprise that Japan was the top nation by some distance, winning 12 medals and scoring points in all but one event. France and Russia were the only others to win more than one gold as 26 teams in total won a medal, including GB, for whom Sally Conway won bronze. Judo also saw Kosovo win its first ever Olympic medal and it was gold.

Sculling events contain one, two or four per boat, whereas the rowing events contain two, four or eight, the latter being the only event where a cox is used (so technically nine in the boat). Great Britain was once again the top rowing nation, with 3 gold medals and earned points in 10 of the 14 events. The USA struggled in the men's events but was much stronger in the women's, scoring points in all but one event.

I prefer this version of the rankings. Rewards nations who genuinely enjoy lots of sports, rather than those that just dope up their athletes in a few high profile events.

Both men's and women's tournaments featured 12 teams divided into 3 group of 4, with 8 teams going through to the knockout stages. Fiji won its first Olympic medal in any sport by taking gold in the men's event. As with several other team sports, no nation won a medal in both events. GB's silver in the men's and 4th in the women's meant they finished top of the points table. Fiji narrowly missed out on tying with GB due to its women's team being pipped for 5th in my classification by France on points difference.

Kenya 93 Number of teams with points: 104 Sailing consisted of 10 events: 5 for men, 4 for women and for the first time an event with mixed pairs. Just 6 points separated the top 5 but France came out on top, just ahead of GB (who topped the medal table) and New Zealand. GB scored points in 8 of the 10 events and finished 9th in the other two. GB outscore the USA for the fourth sport in a row and continue to eat into their lead but the US still has one of its strongest sports to come in the shape of swimming, while GB has what looks to be a weak run of sports at the end. Guatemala's point makes them the 104th team to score. Jamaica finally drop out of the top 20 having not added to the 92 points they scored in athletics. The USA outscored GB 232-101 in athletics. In the other 19 sports so far, GB has outscored the USA 409-370. After the final table, I will also produce a table that scores each sport 8-1 and will see who comes out on top of that. That way, each sport is treated equally and lessens the effect even further of a team being dominant in a particular sport.

Surprisingly, given many Americans' fondness of guns, they didn't dominate the shooting events and it was Italy that was the top nation. GB was only represented in a handful of events but still won two bronze medals and maintained its record so far of winning points in every sport in which it had someone competing. The Independent Olympic Athletes were all Kuwaitis who were competing under the Olympic flag because their own Olympic Committee had been banned by the IOC due to government interference. Vietnam won its first ever Olympic gold medal in the Rio shooting events.

There was an also a 10k open water swimming race. The USA dominated in the pool, scoring exactly the same number of points as they did in athletics, winning a medal in 29 events and scoring points in all but one. Swimming is Australia's best Olympic sport and while they did win 3 gold medals, they couldn't compete with the US across the board. GB have had some disappointing showings in swimming over the year but had a very solid games in Rio, winning one gold and 5 silver medals and winning points in 20 events. The USA are all but certain to finish top of the points standings and GB look well set in 2nd. China and Germany swap places in the overall standings, with France remaining in 4th.

This also saw GB's "perfect" record of scoring points in every sport in which they were represented come to an end, with the British pair finishing 17th in qualifying. It is currently the only Olympic sport in which only women compete.* In 2017, the governing body of aquatic sports, FINA, officially re-named the sport "Artistic Swimming". * Baseball will be re-introduced in Tokyo and features a softball event for women but it comes under the umbrella of baseball. Only women compete in rhythmic gymnastics but again, that comes under the broader sport of gymnastics.

As with judo, two bronze medals were awarded through a repechage tournament, though the participants were worked out differently. In judo, it was the 4 losing quarer-finalists plus the two losing semi-finalist. In taekwondo, the losing semi-finalists were joined by the other fighters who had lost to the two finalists. For the purposes of compiling points, the order went: 8 - gold medalist, 7 - silver medalist, 6 and 5 - bronze medalists (progress through to the competition and overall record determined the higher scorer), 4 and 3 - bronze medal match losers, 2 and 1 - losing quarter-finalists. Just as Japan was the top nation in judo, where the martial art originated, South Korea was the top taekwondo nation, winning 5 medals in total. GB was second, winning a medal of each colour and all 4 fighters earned points. Ivory Coast won its first ever gold medal when Cheick Sallah Cisse landed a kick to the head of GB's Lutalo Muhammad in the last second of their final. Niger's silver medal was its first Olympic medal since 1972. On the overall points table France and Germany are now tied for 4th and Sweden climb into the top 20 for the first time.

Sweden 115 Number of teams with points: 112 Although there are numerous variations of triathlon staged around the world in terms of distance the Olympics simply contains one race for men and one for women, consisting of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. GB finished top of the points table with Alistair Brownlee retaining his men's title (ahead of brother Jonny in 2nd) and Vicky Holland winning bronze in the women's race (ahead of Non Stanford in 4th). With the 4 sports that are left, they could well be GB's last points but they are now over 100 points clear of China in 3rd. Flora Duffy finished 8th in the women's race to give Bermuda their first points, taking the number of teams on the scoreboard to 111.

Almost finished with Rio 2016. A quick straw poll for those reading this thread. Which games should I do next?
2012 Summer Olympics in London 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast
Ideally, I'd have liked to have done the Rio Paralympics but the Paralympics actually has a lot more events than the Olympics and I want to get quite a few of these lists done while I'm not at work.

Kazakhstan 125 Number of teams with points: 118 Weightlifting consisted of 15 events: 8 for men and 7 for women, divided by weight category. Each event features participants attempting two different types of lift: the snatch, in which the bar is raised directly above the lifter's head, and the clean and jerk, where the lifter brings the bar under their chin first, then lifts it above their head. Each competitor gets three lifts of each type and the result is determined by taking the combined weight of each competitor's best lift in each category. Bulgaria and Russia were banned from competing due to numerous doping violations. China topped the table with 5 gold medals and 2 silvers and in the process, took a huge chunk out of GB's advantage over them. GB should still be safe in 2nd place unless China have suddenly become amazing at wrestling. GB had two weightlifters taking part, one of whom was 17-year-old Rebekah Tiler, who came 10th in her category, narrowly missing out on a point. She has since quit weightlifting due to UK Sport cutting its funding and has switched to powerlifting instead. As much as funding helps GB's athletes (and the results speak for themselves), UK Sport are pretty ruthless in terms of which sports get funding and if they don't consider there to be a chance of a medal, the funding won't be there. This explains why on this list GB has earned points in all but two of the sports in which it had someone taking part. Badminton even had its funding cut after Rio, despite a bronze medal because it came as such a surprise it was effectively seen as a fluke. 5 nations scored their first points: Philippines, Albania, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and Iraq, bringing the total to 118.

There are two forms of wrestling in the Games: Freestyle and Greco-Roman. The latter prohibits any contact below the waist. At present, women only compete in Freestyle wrestling, meaning they only contested 6 events. Wrestling was initially dropped from the 2020 Olympics but after changes were made to the format of the contests themselves and additional events created for women it beat baseball/softball and squash in a poll to decide what filled the gap. Baseball/softball would later be added for 2020 as well, along with karate, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing. The latter three are also on the proposed programme for Paris 2024, along with breakdancing. Russia was the top nation in the men's events, while Japan dominated the women's and probably would've finished as the top team overall if women contested Greco-Roman events as well. China picked up 16 points, which wasn't enough to overhaul Great Britain in 2nd place but there was plenty of movement further down as the scramble to finish in the top 10 and top 20 went right down to the final event.

Fascinating piece of work Panda. Exactly the same Top 5 on both lists, but some big movers elsewhere. Personally, I prefer your format, partly because it is good to see so many extra nations rewarded for their efforts. Back in 1896, it was appropriate to acknowledge just the top 3 in the world. But now, a top 8 or top 10 would better reflect the talent and interest in the event. I'd vote for London 2012 next, in part so we can see who had moved up and down the list by Rio 2016. But, obviously, given how much work this is, it should be your choice entirely.
