This number one will be met with a lot of disgust from many, if anyone actually reads this and checks out the song... I didn't know this song before, looks like it will be the one from my favourite yours # 1s in pre-1970s era.

24 May 1958:
1 ( 1 ) Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) All I Have To Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers (#1[2]) 3 ( 3 ) Tulips from Amsterdam - Max Bygraves 4 ( 8 ) Stairway Of Love - Michael Holliday 5 ( -- ) Teacher Teacher - Johnny Mathis
6 ( 7 ) Rumble - Link Wray 7 ( 6 ) Skinny Minnie - Bill Haley & His Comets (#6) 8 ( 4 ) Witch Doctor - David Seville (#2[2]) 9 ( 13 ) Do You Want To Dance - Bobby Freeman 10 ( 5 ) Chanson D'Amour - Art & Dotty Todd (#4)
11 ( 10 ) Secretly - Jimmie Rodgers (#10) 12 ( 15 ) Sugar Moon - Pat Boone 13 ( 9 ) Tom Hark - Elias & His Zigzag Jive Flutes (#6) 14 ( -- ) The Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley 15 ( 21 ) Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes - Chuck Willis
16 ( 12 ) Big Man - Four Preps (#11) 17 ( -- ) Claudette - Everly Brothers 18 ( 11 ) Happy Guitar - Tommy Steele (#7) 19 ( 23 ) Talk To Me Talk To Me Little Willie John 20 ( -- ) Jennie Lee - Jan & Arnie
21 ( 17 ) Crazy Love - Paul Anka (#17) 22 ( 16 ) Doncha' Think It's Time - Elvis Presley (#15) 23 ( 14 ) Kewpie Doll - Perry Como (#10) 24 ( -- ) What Am I Living For - Chuck Willis 25 ( 18 ) The Little Blue Man - Betty Johnson (#1[3])
-- ( 19 ) Return To Me - Dean Martin (#16) -- ( 20 ) Wear My Ring Around Your Neck - Elvis Presley (#7) -- ( 22 ) Looking Back - Nat King Cole (#21) -- ( 24 ) Don't You Just Know It - Huey (Piano) Smith & The Clowns (#2[1]) -- ( 25 ) Billy - Kathy Linden (#5)
The highest new entry is an uptempo swing song by Johnny Mathis - quite rare for him as far as singles go.
We've had the Little Blue Man and now we have the Purple People Eater - I'm not sure if that means it's purple and eats people of any colour, or if only eats purple people. It reached #1 in the USA and samples bits of "Short Shorts" which was a hit for the Royal Teens near the start of the year.
As a double A-side of "All I Want To Do Is Dream" it is the lesser known song, but the USA charts them separately and so I do, but it does look unlikely that "Claudette", which was composed by Roy Orbison about the woman he married (who sadly died in 1966 in a motorcycle accident), will be able to continue their run of number ones.

Johnny Mathis now at #2, whilst Yakety Yak by the Coasters is this week's highest entry.
The Signature Tune Of The Army Game - I assume a TV series and the main reason I don't put commas between the names is because I store my charts in CSV format, due to someone's crazy idea that a comma made a good separator, which means it messes things up if I use one in the artist name or title. I guess I could use semi-colons to separate their names. In any case the song is a fun chant.
Torero by Renato Carosone is sung in Italian although it is about a matador which is generally Spanish. An English language version would become a bigger hit for Julian LaRosa but I won't be charting that. In my chart Julian LaRosa actually had a #1 hit in 1956 with Lipstick Candy & Rubbersole Shoes but in the UK, Torero was his only hit as it was also a minor hit for Renato Carosone.
And from Torero to Zorro - after a #2 with Lollipop, this Chordettes song just scrapes in. It is sung in English.

As today of posting is 22 June I could consider this the chart where I hit the current date I am on in the year
21 June 1958:
1 ( 1 ) Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry < 7th week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Teacher Teacher - Johnny Mathis 3 ( -- ) I Wonder Why - Dion & The Belmonts 4 ( 3 ) Yakety Yak - Coasters (#3) 5 ( 4 ) The Signature Tune Of The Army Game - Michael Medwin; Alfie Bass; Leslie Fyson & Bernard Bresslaw (#4)

21 ( 18 ) Endless Sleep - Jody Reynolds (#18) 22 ( 14 ) Do You Want To Dance - Bobby Freeman (#8) 23 ( 17 ) Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes - Chuck Willis (#14) 24 ( -- ) Padre - Toni Arden 25 ( 15 ) All I Have To Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers (#1[2])
-- ( 16 ) Tulips from Amsterdam - Max Bygraves (#3) -- ( 20 ) Rumble - Link Wray (#6) -- ( 21 ) What Am I Living For - Chuck Willis (#19) -- ( 22 ) Skinny Minnie - Bill Haley & His Comets (#6) -- ( 23 ) Talk To Me Talk To Me - Little Willie John (#19) -- ( 24 ) Sugar Moon - Pat Boone (#12) -- ( 25 ) Witch Doctor - David Seville (#2[2])
What do Showaddywaddy, Status Quo, Marvin Gaye and Racey all have in common? Yes, they all had hits with covers of songs previously done by Dion. Marvin Gaye's "Abraham Martin And John" reached #1 in the combi-chart recently but Dion recorded it first. (Not necessarily better, I'll let you all judge that).
Actually next week will see another "Showaddywaddy classic" enter. All their hits of 1977 and 1978 as well as Heartbeat" and "Three Steps To Heaven" have been hits previous artists. The issue is that if I redo 1977 I did chart those songs first time around so it may be hard to leave them out.
"I Wonder Why" was #5 in the UK on the week of my Barmitzvah, and then climbed to #2, kept off the top by "Matchstalk Men And Matchstalk Cats And Dogs". We won't be seeing that song in our 50s charts. (The closest we came was Pictures Of Matchstick Men by Status Quo in 1968, also about Lowry).

28 June 1958:
1 ( 3 ) I Wonder Why - Dion & The Belmonts < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry (#1[7]) 3 ( -- ) When - Kalin Twins 4 ( 2 ) Teacher Teacher - Johnny Mathis (#2[4]) 5 ( -- ) Poor Little Fool - Ricky Nelson
6 ( 6 ) A Very Precious Love - Doris Day 7 ( 11 ) Rave On - Buddy Holly 8 ( 12 ) Splish Splash - Bobby Darin 9 ( 4 ) Yakety Yak - Coasters (#3) 10 ( 5 ) The Signature Tune Of The Army Game - Michael Medwin; Alfie Bass; Leslie Fyson & Bernard Bresslaw (#4)
11 ( 9 ) High School Confidential - Jerry Lee Lewis (#9) 12 ( 8 ) I Dig You Baby - Marvin Rainwater (#8) 13 ( 15 ) Hard Headed Woman - Elvis Presley 14 ( -- ) Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy 15 ( 7 ) Torero - Renato Carosone (#5)
16 ( 17 ) Little Serenade - Eddie Calvert 17 ( 19 ) Patricia - Perez Prado 18 ( 10 ) Jennie Lee - Jan & Arnie (#8) 19 ( 24 ) Padre - Toni Arden 20 ( 14 ) Zorro - Chordettes (#11)
21 ( 18 ) Guess Things Happen That Way - Johnny Cash (#18) 22 ( -- ) I'm Sorry I Made You Cry - Connie Francis 23 ( 13 ) The Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley (#7) 24 ( -- ) No Chemise Please - Gerry Granahan 25 ( 21 ) Endless Sleep - Jody Reynolds (#18)
-- ( 16 ) Stairway Of Love - Michael Holliday (#3) -- ( 20 ) Claudette - Everly Brothers (#12) -- ( 22 ) Do You Want To Dance - Bobby Freeman (#8) -- ( 23 ) Hang Up My Rock and Roll Shoes - Chuck Willis (#14) -- ( 25 ) All I Have To Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers (#1[2])
As Dion & The Belmonts climb to #1, the Kalin Twins enter at #3 with another song that was later a big hit for Showaddywaddy. I noticed Marc Almond covered a few songs that were around end of 1967 and Bananarama a couple of that were around end of 1969 - start of 1970. But whilst Dion, sometimes with or without the Belmonts, would go on and have a long string of hits, the Kalin Twins would disappear as one-hit wonders.
One of Ricky Nelson's classics enters behind it at #5, and the twangling guitar gives Duane Eddy his debut this week too.

Sporting winners of 1958:
Football
In the English league, Wolverhampton Wanderers ended up Champions with Preston North End second. Manchester United, up to the time of the Munich Air Disaster had won 15 drawn 6 and lost 7 and would probably not have finished champions as Wolves only lost 6 and drew 8 the whole season, but they won just one league game (out of 14) after that point and finished 9th.
Manchester United did reach the final of the FA Cup but were beaten 2-0 by Bolton Wanderers
In Scotland the league title went to Heart of Midlothian with Rangers second (a long way behind so Hearts couldn't mess it up on the last game of the season). Clyde won the Scottish cup but Celtic weren't totally empty-handed as they won the League Cup.
In the European Cup, Real Madrid beat A.C Milan 3-2 in a final at Heysel Stadium. There was no crowd trouble as far as I'm aware.
There was also a cities fairs-cup which ran over 3 seasons, and in the final a Barcelona team beat a London team 8-2 on aggregate, a 2-2 draw in Stamford Bridge, London followed by a 6-0 drubbing at the Nou Camp.
In the world cup, Brazil were victorious 5-2 in a final against the hosts Sweden, helped by a 17-year-old Pelé, whilst Just Fontaine of France won the Golden Boot with a record 13 goals.
Tennis
Ashley Cooper and Althea Gibson were successful at both Wimbledon and US National in the men's and women's events respectively.
Men's Singles:
Wimbledon: Ashley Cooper defeated Neale Fraser, 3–6, 6–3, 6–4, 13–11 (no tie-breaks) US National: Ashley Cooper defeated Malcolm Anderson 6–2, 3–6, 4–6, 10–8, 8–6
Women's Singles:
Wimbledon: Althea Gibson defeated Angela Mortimer, 8–6, 6–2 United States National: Althea Gibson defeated Darlene Hard 3–6, 6–1, 6–2
Baseball
New York Yankees beat the Milwaukee Braves 4 games to 3.
American Football
At this point there is no superbowl and not even an AFL so just NFL.
Winners were Baltimore Colts who beat New York Giants 23-17

No high new entries but the Kalin Twins will continue to challenge Dion & The Belmonts for the honours. In my 1970s charts "When" did do better than "I Wonder Why" but had far weaker competition. In fact when "When" reached #3 in the UK chart it displaced "Chanson D'Amour" which had dropped to that position from #1 the previous week, a song that was a hit for Art & Dotty Todd just earlier.

Only 4 charts this week for 1958 and that's primarily because the playlists were bigger, this one in particular:
12 July 1958:
1 ( 2 ) When - Kalin Twins < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) I Wonder Why - Dion & The Belmonts (#1[2]) 3 ( 3 ) Poor Little Fool - Ricky Nelson 4 ( 5 ) Rave On - Buddy Holly 5 ( 11 ) Sick And Tired - Fats Domino
6 ( -- ) Fever - Peggy Lee 7 ( 6 ) Splish Splash - Bobby Darin (#6) 8 ( -- ) Left Right Out Of Your Heart - Patti Page 9 ( 13 ) Willie And The Hand Jive - Johnny Otis Show 10 ( 9 ) Rebel Rouser - Duane Eddy (#9)
11 ( 4 ) Johnny B Goode - Chuck Berry (#1[7]) 12 ( 10 ) Hard Headed Woman - Elvis Presley (#10) 13 ( 7 ) A Very Precious Love - Doris Day (#6) 14 ( -- ) Ooh! My Soul - Little Richard 15 ( 15 ) I'm Sorry I Made You Cry - Connie Francis
16 ( 8 ) Teacher Teacher - Johnny Mathis (#2[4]) 17 ( 12 ) High School Confidential - Jerry Lee Lewis (#9) 18 ( 22 ) When The Boys Talk About The Girls - Valerie Carr 19 ( -- ) Sally Don't You Grieve - Lonnie Donegan 20 ( -- ) Just A Dream - Jimmy Clanton
21 ( -- ) A Certain Smile - Johnny Mathis 22 ( -- ) If Dreams Come True - Pat Boone 23 ( 14 ) Yakety Yak - Coasters (#3) 24 ( -- ) I'll Always Be In Love With You - Michael Holliday 25 ( 18 ) Little Serenade - Eddie Calvert (#16)
-- ( 16 ) The Signature Tune Of The Army Game - Michael Medwin; Alfie Bass; Leslie Fyson & Bernard Bresslaw (#4) -- ( 17 ) Padre - Toni Arden (#17) -- ( 19 ) Patricia - Perez Prado (#17) -- ( 20 ) I Dig You Baby - Marvin Rainwater (#8) -- ( 21 ) No Chemise Please - Gerry Granahan (#21) -- ( 23 ) For Your Precious Love - Jerry Butler (#23) -- ( 24 ) Torero - Renato Carosone (#5) -- ( 25 ) Guess Things Happen That Way - Johnny Cash (#18)
I modified things slightly because all of the songs on this week's list had been higher than the 3 that fell out by Toni Arden, Gerry Granahan and Jerry Butler.
In any case, the highest entry is a classic by Peggy Lee.

"Volare" is my least favourite song from Eurovision 1958. The first ESC winner Lys Assia was my # 1 too, but in this year with "Giorgio" instead "Refrain" in 1956.

Italy have now reached my chart with 3 Eurovision hits, and none of them were winners. Domenico Mudogno came 3rd in 1958, Gigliola Cinquetti 2nd in 1974 (and reached #3 in my chart), Raphael Gualazzi came 2nd in 2011 and #22 in my chart.
The year in which I charted the most Eurovision entries was 2010 but Italy didn't participate that year.

16 August 1958:
1 ( 1 ) Fever - Peggy Lee < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Left Right Out Of Your Heart - Patti Page 3 ( 8 ) Born Too Late - Poni-Tails 4 ( 5 ) Trudie - Joe Mr Piano Henderson 5 ( 4 ) Ginger Bread - Frankie Avalon (#4)
6 ( 10 ) Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu - Domenico Modugno 7 ( 3 ) When - Kalin Twins (#1[3]) 8 ( 9 ) Everybody Loves A Lover - Doris Day 9 ( 7 ) Jacqueline - Bobby Helms (#7) 10 ( 6 ) The Only Man On The Island - Tommy Steele (#4)
11 ( 16 ) Early In The Morning - Bobby Darin & The Rinky Dinks 12 ( -- ) Bird Dog - Everly Brothers 13 ( 19 ) Somebody Touched Me - Buddy Knox 14 ( 14 ) Wonderful Things - Frankie Vaughan 15 ( -- ) Devoted To You - Everly Brothers
16 ( -- ) Are You Really Mine - Jimmie Rodgers 17 ( 18 ) Western Movies - Olympics 18 ( 12 ) Sally Don't You Grieve - Lonnie Donegan (#9) 19 ( 13 ) Ooh! My Soul - Little Richard (#9) 20 ( 11 ) I Wonder Why - Dion & The Belmonts (#1[2])
21 ( 21 ) Think It Over - Crickets 22 ( 17 ) Just A Dream - Jimmy Clanton (#13) 23 ( 15 ) Poor Little Fool - Ricky Nelson (#3) 24 ( 20 ) A Certain Smile - Johnny Mathis (#14) 25 ( 22 ) Sick And Tired - Fats Domino (#5)
-- ( 23 ) Little Star - Elegants (#18) -- ( 24 ) One Summer Night - Danleers (#21) -- ( 25 ) I Know Where I'm Goin' - George Hamilton IV (#19)
Very common in the USA for both sides of a single to be charted separately and thus the Everly Brothers get two entries in the same week. Bird Dog is the better known song and reached #2 in the UK (and #1 in some published charts in place of Tommy Edwards, who is on the next playlist, which is a massive one).
Patti Page has reached #2 three times without having had a #1, as have both Alma Cogan and Johnnie Ray. If my chart were ever extended further back it's possible one of them may have had a #1, I'm pretty certain Johnnie Ray would have done though not sure with what song (possibly Such A Night, which was later done by Elvis but the original was actually done by Clyde McPhatter with the Drifters).
This is one of the few songs not on Spotify but there's actually a proper video of her singing it.

As Peggy Lee now gets a 4th week at the top, we have a summer anthem (not one I can enter into the Summer Anthems contest, it is too famous for that), enter at #4. Seems strange this enters right at the end of summer.
The second highest entry is the original version of Rockin' Robin, which reached #2 in the USA and just #29 in the UK, but Michael Jackson made it more famous in the UK. His version reached #2 in the NM chart, getting on the playlist just before I started doing the retro lists from the 50s so he was maybe lucky to get his version included. (Robin Day is not related to Doris).
Connie Francis gets in at #9 with a Neil Sedaka composition and as they charted separately in the USA, Carolina Moon, an old 20s song, gets her in at #25 too. One day I may make a playlist of all the songs with "Moon" in the title (and I recall American Werewolf In London soundtrack included quite a lot of them). My playlist had 2 such songs in a row (Perry Como has the other, coming up later).

"Fever" is a good sample for "It's cover version, but you didn't know it before" topic.
Original : www.youtube.com/watch?v=y27vBA68Zyk (# 24 in 1956 year)
I'm not a fan of Peggy Lee version, but her "Fever" is much better than Madonna's cover (rare her single from pre "Ray Of Light" days, which I don't like).
For summer songs contest you always can use YVA - Vasaros Mergaites (Summer Girls).

I've submitted a summer anthem. "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran though is too famous / classic to be used, as well as having been a chart hit albeit not peaking as high as people would think it did (only #18 in the UK, it did reach #8 in the USA).
