729 - Only Love Can Hurt Like This by Paloma Faith No. 6 in 2014
This peaked at number 5 on my chart, I fell in love with the song after the Brit Awards performance.

I do generally like Charlie Puth's music a lot, but I do find him a little frustrating because he has a lot more talent that he shows. He writes his own stuff, produces his own songs, can play his own instruments, but it never seems to show through. Maybe he actually needs some better co-writers to give some of his songs some more oomph.

725 - Love Story by Taylor Swift No. 2 in 2009 I am so ashamed to admit this was number 1 on my chart. It's so cheesy, but I liked it in 2009. Don't care that much about it now.

721 - I Kissed A Girl by Katy Perry No. 1 in 2008
Really enjoy this one, was number 1 in my chart too, but can't stand her live vocals. My ears start to bleed.

719 - Irreplaceable by Beyonce No. 4 in 2006
This was played a lot on the radio, otherwise I wouldn't know it because I have never really cared for Beyonce. She released a lot of videos and singles from this album and most of them were dire, but luckily Freemasons came up with fantastic remixes. This one has the same production just like a few songs by Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks to name a few. I can relate to the song because I split from my fiance just around the time when this song hit the airplay.

718 - The Pretender by Foo Fighters No. 8 in 2007
Surprised to learn this sold a million, they were very unlucky with their singles in the 90's (chart wise). I can't get over the fact how good Walking after you still sounds actually, the video version. My personal favorite from them.

714 - Attention by Charlie Puth No 9 in 2017
This is probably the only song by Charlie Puth that I would be able to sing or hum (a solo one), it's nothing special to be honest, but he seems to be talented and has his circle of fans but he's already had his peak, I think.

713 - Killer Queen by Queen No. 2 in 1974
Some real classic Queen now. I didn’t really get this band when I was younger, Bohemian Rhapsody aside they just seemed a bit naff. My tastes have refined a bit since, it’s hard to imagine not liking the likes of Killer Queen now. Brian May’s guitar playing is perfect, Freddie’s vocals wonderful, and it makes you want to dance and air guitar at the same time.
Incidentally it’s one of 10 Queen singles on this list. Their back catalogue has clearly transitioned well into the digital era.

I would love to see how much 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (the film) contributed Queen sales/streams - a before and after would be interesting.
'Killer Queen' is, appropriately, one of their killer tracks. I've been vaguely thinking about doing a Queen top 10 or top 20 - I don't know where this one would sit but it'll be up there.

Yeah, Killer Queen is easily among the top 5 things the band ever did. It's also up there with the best Glam Rock songs of that era too.

And with that, I'm off! I'm going on holiday for a couple of weeks now, and to avoid being told off for staring at my phone the whole time I'll be (mostly) giving Haven a miss for a bit. I will return with more Millionaires at some point in the second half of August.

I think I let my dislike of Bohemian Rhapsody (I know, I know, but it's so overplayed I can barely stand to hear it half the time) get in the way when it comes to Queen, so I never consider them to be a band I like.
But really, they've got some great songs, and Killer Queen is one of them.

712 - All You Need Is Love by The Beatles No. 1 in 1967
A song written by John Lennon for a show called One World, the first ever global live television link up. Different countries contributed a cultural performance for an audience estimated at between 400 and 700 million people, this was the UK's offering. The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein described the performance as the band's finest moment, strange then that it's not on YouTube and I've had to post a video with no pictures.
Apparently Lennon kept the lyrics delierately simple, knowing that a lot of the audience would have limited English language skills. The effect is incredible - the simplicity of the song and yet the enormity of its message, an entire philosophy for how to live life, just underlines the human tendency to over complicate things. I genuinely believe that despite all of the incredibly complex and difficult struggles people get themselves into in this world, love is all you need. It is the fundamental solution to everything, because with love comes peace, respect, kindness, and consequently more fanciful notions like human rights too. If we focussed our efforts entirely on love there would be no war, and any natural disasters that befell populations would be quickly dealt with. There will always be death, and consequently sadness, but no matter, in life all you need is love. On paper, and in a song, it's simple. In reality we seem to find it a bit challenging. Lennon would have another big hit on a similar, if slightly more politically charged, theme just a couple of years later, Give Peace A Chance.
All You Need Is Love was number one for 3 weeks in the summer of 1967, sandwiched between Procul Harem's A Whiter Shade Of Pale and San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Some Flowers In Your Hair) by Scott McKenzie. I cannot believe there were ever three better consecutive number one singles, or another 13 weeks where the top of the charts more accurately represented the times the world was going through. What a time to be alive (I imagine, I was -10 years old at the time).
This is the first of 9 Beatles songs on the list. There were already several before the digital age began of course, but this one has definitely been boosted somewhat by 21st century consumption.

Queen's Greatest Hits is I think the biggest selling "Greatest Hits" album of all time so hardly surprising that in a streaming era people are listening to them.

Did you have a good holiday? Yes, thanks, excellent, if a little different. Isn't there a holidays thread in Gubbins? I should probably provide a fuller answer in there
