As I'm tied up with the festivals it's just 3 weeks on this playlist but it's thrown up a number of classic songs.
David Essex gets his first NM #1 with what was his 2nd (and final) UK #1. Abba get another big hit, for them only their 2nd UK top 10 hit, in my chart their 5th.
Esther Phillips was last in the chart in December 1962 with "Release Me", and by her version coming before Engelbert Humperdinck I decided not to chart his version. The Four Seasons were also in the chart then with "Big Girls Don't Cry" although their debut was "Sherry" a few months earlier.
Trumping both of those though is Neil Sedaka who has a song also on my 1959 playlist with "I Go Ape".

David Essex remains at #1 ahead of the Jaws theme and Abba's latest hit. Meanwhile we get a classic entry by the Eagles ahead of the debut hit for Bob Marley, although he has already written 2 hits for others, originally his songs that were hits as covers, including a #1 for Eric Clapton last year with "I Shot The Sheriff" - the other being "Stir It Up" by Johnny Nash (who died very close to the time I am writing this).
Dobie Gray's hit was recorded and first released around 1966 but has only just become a hit for him.

The highest new entry in the chart is a song best known in the UK for the cover 2 years later by Status Quo (which many think is their song) and would be battling in the chart with Abba (Name Of The Game) who are #2 this week, also with Wings who have a song in my next playlist and with Queen who are not that far away from a rather big hit. Status Quo themselves don't have a song out right now.
A chart debut this week for Natalie Cole. All the artists entering this week have, in my opinion, much more famous songs, albeit John Fogerty achieved those with his former band Creedence Clearwater Revival. The Exciters did the original of "Tell Him" in 1963 peaking at #4, later covered by Hello (but I didn't chart their version) but Hello do have another song on the playlist.

Two weeks before a debut of my favourite single from 1975.
I don't know this Captain & Tennille track. Their "Do That To Me One More Time" reached # 1 of my chart in March 1980, but was replaced by Barbara Dickson - January February after one week on the top.
Quentin and Ash version of "Tell Him" is the most successful single from 1996 year with 5 weeks on the top of my chart.

Two weeks before a debut of my favourite single from 1975. That one is on my playlist, not sure how it will do, but the big one from the new playlist (which also covers just 3 weeks) is on the next week so will enter high in the next chart, and will probably replace David Essex on top, I don't think Abba (or the Eagles or anyone else) will make it.

Bruce Springsteen makes his debut crashing in at #1 with his signature song, although it would take him nearly a decade to really make it in the UK, and his biggest UK hit would be in 1994. David Essex and Abba are brushed aside and the Eagles do squeeze up one place to #3.
Bruce Springsteen is the 2nd artist to debut at #1, the first being the Doors in 1967 with "Light My Fire". In the modern era the only artist to debut at #1 were Cornershop with "Brimful Of Asha" in 1998.
Of these only Bruce Springsteen would go on to have more #1s, with "Dancing In The Dark" in 1984 and his version of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" in Christmas 1985, a very old song, and his own recording was made live in 1978. He also wrote the #1 hit "Because The Night" for Patti Smith Group in 1978 and we will see if "Blinded By The Light" also gets to #1 in 1976 for Manfred Mann's Earth Band when we get there.

Why # 1 debuts were so rare in your chart ?

Songs entering at number one are quite rare i.e. not the norm, but with The Doors, Bruce Springsteen and Cornershop, these are debuts at number one with their first ever single. In the UK that didn't happen until 1994, in my chart it has happened in 1967 and 1975.
Of course (albeit not with Cornershop) I have hindsight as to what is coming and therefore a song may enter at #1 to get more weeks in before the one I know is coming. And you know exactly what big one is coming - 4 weeks ahead.

The week Good Old Days has been waiting for, but probably disappointed that Reparata only got the 5th highest entry at #29. It's her first hit since 1968 when "Captain Of Your Ship" by Reparata & The Delrons reached #2 but I'm not sure if she was the lead singer on that song or whether she was the original Reparata and I think there was some dispute in use of the name. The big masterpiece by the artist who debuts at #18 this week is a few months away.

For some years I thought that Reparata (and Kenickie too) was a girlband.
"Shoes" spent 6 weeks on the top, became my favourite single from 1975 year and was rated as unusual 10 / 10. The lyrics of "Shoes" pushed very good song in masterpieces category together with Sue Wilkinson and Anmary main hits. For small period of time I used "Shoes" lyrics with changed first line in my signature.
Also "Shoes" is a part of my holy trinity best songs about wedding together with Pearls' version of "Third Finger Left Hand" and "Catch The Bride's Bouquet", recorded by Irish group Maxi (she represented Ireland on ESC 1973), Dick and Twink.

The battle at the bottom of the charts between the comedy acts sees John Inman (Are You Being Served) get in whilst Windsor Davies & Don Estelle (It Ain't Half Hot Mum) fail this time around. Remember it's a music chart not a sitcom chart, but they did make some great British sitcoms in the 1970s.
Supership is actually credited to George Bad Benson, but he dropped the Bad later. And this particular song isn't on Spotify, whilst all his later music is. Again no real explanation.

The highest new entry this week is Maxine Nightingale, which would have done better had it not been that this copied a song that was a hit quite recently other than changing the lyrics.
My 1959 playlist contains Dinah Washington's version of "What A Difference A Day Made" and the previous one (which will provide the new entries now) had the Flamingos version of "I Only Have Eyes For You", which was a UK #1 for Art Garfunkel in 1975 but I didn't chart it. Unlike the new version of What A Difference A Day Made, which turned it into an uptempo disco stomper, Art Garfunkel didn't do much for a song that dates back to the 1930s, as does "What A Difference A Day Made". I think both of them are 1934 songs.
However Art Garfunkel does get an entry this week together with his old partner Paul Simon, who are not formally back together but did a one-off reunion, after Paul Simon had written this song and decided it would be suited to do as a duo with Art.
Going back to the subject of uptempo disco stompers or high-energy music, that's something I might associate with 1984 and Pete Waterman... well he's in the chart as 14-18 doing a song even older than "I Only Have Eyes For You" and "What A Difference A Day Made", "Goodbye-ee" dating back to 1917.
And I have Trail Of The Lonesome Pine on my new 1975 playlist. So lots of very old music.

I like to think of the 60s as very diverse but when the Beatles appeared, most of the stars from the past few years disappeared like they were no longer relevant, but in the mid-70s both Neil Sedaka and Paul Anka, who were quite young singer-songwriters in the late 50s and early 60s made successful comebacks.
On the whole, whilst I do like Paul Anka's early music and he's been very successful in my 50s charts, I'm not that keen on his 70s material, whereas I do like that of Neil Sedaka.
The Drifters (the American group) have a single in both my current 1959 and 1975 playlist, and they had hits the whole time, albeit with ever-changing line-ups.

-- ( -- ) Na Na Is The Saddest Word - Stylistics -- ( -- ) I'm Still Gonna Need You - Osmonds -- ( -- ) Part Time Love - Gladys Knight & The Pips
Only 5 of the 8 songs get into the chart, with the highest being Steeleye Span's rendition of "All Around My Hat" which was their biggest hit but generally not liked by real fans of Steeleye Span who see it as a bit of a sell-out and some have nicknamed it "All Around Mike Batt" as he produced it.
If Queen are at #1 with a song having multiple parts, well Wings did it previously with Band On The Run and on their album I see "Venus And Mars" and "Rock Show" as totally separate songs but have been medleyed together to make a single.
Not very good for the Stylistics this time, they had an NM #1 earlier in the year and a #3 with the follow-up that was a #1 in the UK (thus reversing the positions).
Gladys Knight has been generally more successful in my chart in the 70s than she was in the 60s but fails this time.
The Osmonds also fail to get in. Whilst Donny alone has failed every time so far, the group usually do better and most of their singles to date have charted.

I see you didn't chart Diana Ross' Do You Know Where You're Going To.
Be interesting to see if you chart it in 1976.

I see you didn't chart Diana Ross' Do You Know Where You're Going To. Be interesting to see if you chart it in 1976. You'll see it a lot sooner than that. Good song but zero chance of toppling Queen.

Diana Ross gets the highest new entry at #12 this week among an enormous list of releases, in fact I had to stick to 3 weeks of new songs per week because of the increased volume, and there is a final list of 3 weeks that closes the year which, in spite of being near the end of the year, is still fairly large.
The Bay City Rollers are among those entries even though they also climb to #3 this week.
