Thanks for compiling Panda . This was the first year I compiled my first chart (Sledgehammer was my first number one), so nice trip down memory lane here. Still cannot fathom to this day how Nick Berry was the second biggest selling single of the year with this pile of old slop. Power of TV. Unfortunately Simon Cowell saw through this and later brought us Robson & Jerome.

The 1980s saw covers of songs from the 70s, the 60s, the 50s, the 40s and the 30s reach #1. "Don't Leave Me This Way" is a cover from the 70s. (Saving All My Love For You is another)
I only count proper covers, not samples or parts of Jive Bunny medleys.

Yes, also "Only You". "The Only Way Is Up" was a cover of a 1983 song by Otis Clay. And I'd count Band Aid II in there too.

Melody Maker compiled on the points system had Diana Ross at #1. What was their points system? I really couldn't remember now.
This stuck in my head because it really surprised me.
My memory says Melody Maker only compiled a top 30 although it could be that they eventually increased to a top 50. Certainly they wouldn't have given bonus points to the top 3.
