HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 24th JULY 1988

This week’s Retro-Chart has been dominated by a song that has decimated the competition with a huge surge in points.



She almost made it to number one last week, however Kim Wilde makes her charge for the top in impressive style. You Came shatters the record for most points awarded to a solo singer (male or female) in a single week. We seem to much prefer our duos and groups on the Retro-Chart - only two solo artists have previously amassed over 200 points in a single week. Total Eclipse Of The Heart was our first song to break the 200 points barrier in its two week run at the top in 1983, achieving a score of 205. It took Peter Gabriel three years to follow this up with Sledgehammer managing to reach 203 points in its four week run at the top.

You Came is Top Ten on twelve individual charts so it could have a residency for a while at the top of the Retro-Chart.

Debbie Gibson was never really in the running for a second week at the top although Foolish Beat proves quite tenacious for a record in its eight week on the chart as it slips to number two.

INXS are also proving similarly difficult to dislodge as the former number one, Never Tear Us Apart, holds steady at number three.

Yazz is back in the Top Ten with her Plastic Population, reaffirming the message in her song that The Only Way Is Up as she jumps 15 places to number 4 to become this week’s biggest climber.

Highest new entry is an impressive debut at number nine for Siouxsie and The Banshees with Peek-a-Boo.

I think of 1988 as being the year of house music, pop princesses and S/A/W but I'd forgotten just how many gorgeous ballads there were, all of which still sound great today. 

Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You and Foolish Beat both topped my chart recently, Breathe are flying high and now Gloria finally makes a long-awaited entry with Anything For You.  I'd heard it a lot already on America's Top Ten and had almost given up on it cracking our Top 40.  From the flawless album of the same name:

I bought her first three albums. I was hoping that New Inside would be another HAOFH but it was really bad, a complete wrong turn, although to be fair I think the charts had changed so much over that two year period I'm not sure what she could have done to have remained popular.

I keep meaning to buy Pieces of Me, I've read some really good reviews of it.

I bought her first three albums. I was hoping that New Inside would be another HAOFH but it was really bad, a complete wrong turn, although to be fair I think the charts had changed so much over that two year period I'm not sure what she could have done to have remained popular.

I keep meaning to buy Pieces of Me, I've read some really good reviews of it.

I really like New Inside, but it took a couple of listens to grow on me. Pieces Of Me is very good, but her best album is The Color Of Silence - that's her Jagged Little Pill moment!

Just illustrates the diversity of Haveners.

For me Could've Been was her finest hour and didn't take to I Saw Him Standing There.

Don't really remember Feelings Of Forever but I see after her 3 top 10 hits it fared badly in the US then strangely All This Time took her back in the top 10.

Had a listen to FOF and it's not a bad little record but it fared badly in the UK.

I think I'm one of only a few who has carried on buying every album of hers right up to the present day! Some of her later albums are just brilliant.

Never got into albums, was primarily a singles person buying at least half-a-dozen a week up until the beginning of the Millennium when Downloading changed everything.

The only artists I bought regularly were Cliff, Diana Ross and Abba - I've a couple of Boney M and Blondie.

The exception was Greatest Hits albums - quite a few of those in particular Diana Ross, must have at least a dozen which are all basically the same songs arranged in a different order.
