Gorillaz - Dare It's great when genuinely brilliant songs find their way to #1 which you wouldn't normally expect to, but this is just a wicked tune (for want of a more adult description!). I always found Gorillaz more interesting than Blur to be honest - it's like they invented a whole new genre of music which infused indie with dance, and whatever else they fancied doing really! The use of Shaun Ryder on this was a great move too.

Not a massive Gorillaz fan, but Dare is brilliant. A real breath of fresh air number one, and has aged really well.

I don't like any of those number ones! 2005 is probably my least favorite year in music of that decade. Dare is brilliant though!

Pussycat Dolls Featuring Busta Rhymes - Don't Cha This is so well-known now that it's hard to go back and remember hearing it for the first time. The Pussycat Dolls were a great girl group who had the edge of Destiny's Child, but had the fun pop factor too, and 'Don't Cha' was the perfect debut hit for them - it just sounded so fresh and funky. It still sounds good today, but it's overplay and it's use on TV adverts has had an effect on my desire to listen to the song much. Shame, because it is undeniably very good.

Sugababes - Push The Button This segues nicely from the last one! Another massive girl group of the era, and another fantastic pop song. I'm enjoying this one slightly more because it's not so overplayed, so it hasn't lost any of its appeal. I can't remember if it's my favourite Sugababes song or not, but it must be in my top three!

Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor We're into a whole new level of brilliantness now with one of the best bands of the era, and one of the freshest tunes to reach the #1 spot in years. I think the Monkeys did in 2005 what Oasis did in 1994 and brought a fresh new style of rock music to the mainstream. It just grabs your attention from the first few bars, and when its over you feel like you've been on a fast fairground ride (for want of a better description!)

Westlife - You Raise Me Up There were a few anti-Westlife puns I could have put in here to start, but in truth I do like the song, even if their's isn't the best version by a long shot. I actually can't believe (after just checking Wikipedia) that this song was only written in 2002; I always assumed it was one of those ancient hymns like 'Ave Maria'. Anyway, I absolutely adore Josh Groban's version, but Westlife's lacks any real emotion or power - I think they just saw it as an easy #1 single to make at the time.

Madonna - Hung Up And now it's a massive welcome back to the Queen of Pop, with her danciest hit in quite some time. I can remember when this first came out and I just played it over and over again (I can't remember the last time that happened with any new song!) and I'm happy to say it hasn't lost any of its disco-ball sparkle over time. It would have still been great without the ABBA sample, but it does add that extra something to the song. Well done Madge!

The Pussycat Dolls - Stickwitu I wasn't expecting to hear from the Dolls again so soon, but in truth I had completely forgotten how this one went! It's not unusual for the follow-up single to a big pop song to be a ballad, but it worked as it became their second #1 in a row, proving they were no one-hit wonders. I remembered the song as soon as it got to the chorus and liked it straight away - it almost sounds like it could be a 90s Mariah Carey ballad. Very pleasant and welcome.

Nizlopi - JCB Song I've always found this one to be a little bit cringey if I'm honest. I'm sure it must have only got to #1 due to the novelty factor of the song, because it just plods along without going anywhere.... until the last minute, which is by far the best part of the song. It's ok, but I wouldn't ever choose to listen to it for any other reason than a project like this one!

Shayne Ward - That's My Goal And now we come to the start of the X-Factor winners' automatic claim to the Christmas #1 spot for several years, in what I call 'How the talent show stole Christmas'.... At least Shayne was a competent singer and it was an original song, and I do quite like the build up at the end. It's not a classic Christmas #1 by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not the worst either.

I know it's been a long time coming, but here are my rankings for 2005:
Best
1. James Blunt - You're Beautiful 2. Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock 3. Oasis - The Importance Of Being Idle 4. Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor 5. Madonna - Hung Up
Worst 1. Eminem - Like Toy Soldiers 2. Crazy Frog - Axel F 3. Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds 4. Westlife - You Raise Me Up 5. Nizlopi - JCB Song
All things considered it was a vintage year though!

Not 100 % sure about JCB Song, but Against All Odds, Like Toy Soldiers and You Raise Me Up didn't deserve to be in the worst list.

Arctic Monkeys - When The Sun Goes Down This song about prostitution is another winner for the Sheffield lads, proving that they were here to stay! What more can I say, it's another brilliant indie anthem and if anything is even better than the first one!

Notorious B.I.G. Featuring Diddy, Nelly, Jagged Edge & Avery Storm - Nasty Girl Another posthumous hit - this was taken from the album 'Duets: The Final Chapter' and was a rare climber to the #1 spot in those days, after entering at #2 the previous week. There's quite a line-up of guests on this one, and in truth I don't even really remember it from the time, but I do quite like it actually. It's from a time when I could listen to some rap records without immediately reaching for the skip button.

Meck Featuring Leo Sayer - Thunder In My Heart Again Now you didn't expect an old Leo Sayer single to get the remix treatment and end up at #1 in 2006, but this really works. The original only reached #22 in 1977 but was given a massively new lease of life here to turn it into a club banger! I think this still sounds great today, and maybe Kygo should take notes!

Best 1. Sugababes - Push The Button 2. Stereophonics - Dakota 3. U2 - Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own 4. Arctic Monkeys - I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor 5. Nizlopi - JCB Song
Worst 1. Tony Christie feat. Peter Kay - Is This The Way To Amarillo? 2. Crazy Frog - Axel F 3. Steve Brookstein - Against All Odds 4. Oasis - Lyla 5. Elvis Presley - One Night / I Got Stung
I only dislike 4 #1's from this year, so Elvis is there because he robbed the Manics of the 1000th #1.
