Jay-Z Featuring Rihanna & Kanye West - Run This Town Another R&B/Hip-Hop #1 and an all-star line-up here as Rihanna joins forces with two of the biggest rappers on the planet. I must admit it to being another one that I don't have much recollection of beyond the title, and it's hard to imagine that it would have been #1 had it been three unknowns performing it. I don't find it unlistenable, like some rap (sorry), but it's not something I will probably rush to be putting on again anytime soon either.

Pixie Lott - Boys And Girls I had completely forgotten Ms. Lott's follow-up single was a #1 too - this must have been a period of the charts that I didn't pay as much attention to because I don't have that much recollection of this one either! It's ok, but nowhere near as good as the first one, although the chorus is quite catchy.

Taio Cruz - Break Your Heart Well I had a feeling he'd pop up soon - I've mentioned him a couple of times when reviewing Tinchy Stryder (I don't know why those two always remind me of each other!). This one probably more veers into the dance/pop end of R&B but it's still a corker, and impossible for me to sit still to.

Ahhhh Taio Cruz. The British answer to Ne-Yo, yet somehow manages to be even more bland and dull.

Chipmunk - Oopsy Daisy It's amazing how many artists and songs you forget over time, but this one had completely slipped my mind! I'm not sure who is singing the female vocal but she isn't credited, and for some reason his name has been shortened to Chip on Spotify... It's quite refreshing to hear something you'd forgotten about though (unless you'd blocked it out for a good reason), and I do think this is another cracking tune.

Alexandra Burke Featuring Flo Rida - Bad Boys I have to admit I was a massive fan of Alexandra when she was on X-Factor, and when this came out I was totally blown away - and then by the whole debut album... It just smacks you in the face from the opening few bars, and was definitely a cut above most of the talent show related music that had come before it.

Cheryl Cole - Fight For This Love Oh and now for the X-Factor judge, who was decidedly less talented than many of the acts she critiqued - I can remember her singing this live on the show and she sounded dreadful. The song itself isn't bad though, especially if you don't have to watch her perform it! No, I actually did really like it at the time. It hasn't aged brilliantly but it's still a pretty good pop song.

As we get further into 2009 I find myself not knowing any of these (other than I Got A Feeling). Somewhere here the line has been crossed where I have essentially lost all contact with the UK chart and drifted off onto my own path.
It would be interesting if you played all the NM #1s and told me what you thought of them.

JLS - Everybody In Love I've never counted all the X-Factor contestant #1 singles there have been, but there must have been quite a few by now. This is the runner-up boyband's second in a row and it's another pretty good attempt at an R&B pop crossover hit that would have the young girls drooling. It sounds good to my ears too and another winner.

Post-1998 would mean you'd be getting a lot of songs that weren't hits in either the UK or USA.
e.g. the last few NM #1s of 2009 were:
Slow Club - It Doesn't Have To Be Beautiful Dakota - Wild Child Milk Kan - Don't Panic Wallis Bird - To My Bones Raveonettes - Bang Lisa Mitchell - Coin Laundry Shwa Losben - All I Want For Chanukah (Is Hookers And Blow) Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde - Postcard From London
You'll be hard pressed to find the last 2 of those. The latter was on Spotify and youtube, and I see it is still on youtube (though it may have been removed at one point) I did enter it for one Xmas vision / treasures whichever it was at the time. The Shwa Losben one was floating around on youtube for a while but I think I couldn't find it last year either (there is a version on bandcamp).

The Black Eyed Peas - Meet Me Halfway It was definitely a certain type of song that was reaching the top in 2009 - it seems ages since we had a rock or indie song up there, but I can only work with what I'm given I suppose. Anyway, this is probably my favourite of the three BEP tracks we've had recently - although it's probably because this is far less overplayed than 'I Gotta Feeling'. Whatever the reason, this one is a far more pleasant revisit and up there with their more decent numbers.

I listen to it every Christmas and it should've been a massive hit!

The X Factor Finalists - You Are Not Alone Ok so I could tolerate this being done once for charity, but did we need it to become a regular occurence? I think probably not. This Michael Jackson cover featured famous contestants such as Olly Murs, Joe McElderry, Stacey Solomon and Jedward - whose success was probably the turning point for me with thinking the show had become a bit of a joke (more of a joke..). The end result is pretty substandard really.

Peter Kay's Animated All Star Band - The Official BBC Children In Need Medley When the video to this was released on Children In Need I thought it was a really inspired piece of work, and must have taken a lot of work to get all of those classic children's TV characters featured. Without the video though it just sounds very childish and seems to go on forever. It is what it is really, and it did the job it was supposed to.
