Do you know what, I'm going to leave it there for tonight because I feel like I need to put some really cool music on now to get some sort of street-cred back on my street!

I've decided not to go too cool though, and am now treating the neighbours to some Kim Wilde!

Usually I prefer pure pop cover versions over the originals ( hi Walk This Way) and don't judge them if they sounds like original. Based on my age I heard them years before that's why Uptown Girl is firstly Westlife, Lady Marmalade is Mouln Rouge OST and Eternal Flame is AK song. I can forgive most things, but preferring the Atomic Kitten version of 'Eternal Flame' to The Bangles is pretty shocking!

My sister was a big AK fan and Eternal Flame was her favourite their single. When I wll fix all problems with my PC that I will continue my 90s number ones ranking and start to think about personal top 100 favourite songs from girl groups. It sounds like a good idea, but it's very unusual countdown and I'm not sure if anybody here will enjoy a domination of Lithuanian girl groups.

I heard this 'Lady Marmalade' first and probably prefer it although either way I'm not mad about it.
That said, hearing a cover/remix first is not an automatic love for me. I heard 'Call On Me' by Eric Prydz before I had even heard of Steve Winwood. Then heard 'Valerie' randomly one day and completely fell in love with it.

Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk - Lady Marmalade
It's very rare that I like a musical, but Moulin Rouge changed my mind about musicals in 2001. Love everything about it. Especially "Come what may".
Roger Sanchez - Another Chance
Brilliant song and video!
Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame
Another unnecessary cover.
Blue - Too Close
And more covers....

Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya & P!nk - Lady Marmalade I quite like that they're all trying to outdo each other on this. The winner is P!nk. The loser is Aguilera, who looks like a third-rate drag queen and sounds like she's undergoing surgery.
Disappointing that Missy Elliott didn't get a credit on this. She's just as much a part of it as the others, and she deserves an artist credit on a US no. 1.

Oh I hadn't realised that Missy Elliott was even on it! It's a bit weird that she didn't get a credit then - especially as she was a bigger name than at least 2 of the people on the list!

She also co-produced it.

DJ Otzi - Hey Baby (Uhh, Ahh!) This was a rare occasion where a record hovered around outside the top 40 for 7 weeks on import, before inevitable jumping to the #1 spot when it was finally released in the U.K.. Like everybody who owned the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, I already knew the far superior original Bruce Channel version from 1961. I mean this is undeniably a 'get on your feet' demanding tune - it's just the "Uhh, Ahh!s" that I find incredibly annoying. I really feel it could have done without those, because they make it cringey sounding.

Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head And now a massive 4 week #1 for Kylie, and her second big comeback single in as many years. This one was on a totally new level though and it fast became her new signature tune. It was a dancefloor filler from the off, and instantly recognisable from the first couple of bars. Some may find the 'la la la's' annoying, but I just think this an A-grade pop/dance number.

Afroman - Because I Got High Oh I had totally forgotten this existed! Well what can I say - it's just a bit of fun, isn't it? And who doesn't love getting high? Oops, did I really just say that? No, in all seriousness, this isn't one of the worst #1s of the year - in fact it's really infectious. The fact I haven't heard it in years probably helps with it's fresh sounding-ness, but I actually really got into that!

Westlife - Queen Of My Heart I actually really loved this at the time, but we'll see how it's aged: Well not very well by the sounds of it! It's funny because I remember it as being another of those big 'Sailing'/'Rhythm Of My Heart' sing-alongs with lots more going on, but all these years later it's a bit flat sounding and not very exciting. It's ok but very average. Disappointing.

Blue - If You Come Back I had completely forgotten how this ballad went, but it's all coming back to me now (see what I did there...?), and the chorus is quite catchy and lovely, but the verses really let it down. That's all I have to say really.

S Club 7 - Have You Ever Another ballad - If the record buying public were going through a mushy period, why can't they have bought the new songs by Alicia Keys and Gabrielle? Anyhow, this was at the top of the pile and it's ok but not as good as 'Never Had A Dream Come True' by a long shot. Pleasant is probably the best praise I could give to it!

Daniel Bedingfield - Gotta Get Thru This Oh this was massive at the time, wasn't it! I wonder what happened to him. I wasn't ever a massive fan of his but I can't deny this was a pretty good garage track that actually sounds better in retrospect (like so much other music) than it did at the time!

Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman - Somethin' Stupid The Christmas #1 and last chart topper of the year, this was part of Robbie's venture into Swing music. I'm not sure why he chose Nicole Kidman as his partner, but her vocals seem to be drowned out a bit by the music - I haven't heard her sing anything else to be able to say whether that's a good thing or not! It's ok I suppose, but they're not a patch on Frank & Nancy.

There's a lot less to choose from than 2000, but here's my pick from 2001:
Best 1. Kylie - Can't Get You Out Of My Head 2. Atomic Kitten - Whole Again 3. Shaggy - It Wasn't Me 4. Emma Bunton - What Took You So Long 5. Destiny's Child - Survivor
Worst 1. Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame 2. Bob The Builder - Mambo #5 3. Hear'say - The Way To Your Love 4. Westlife - Uptown Girl 5. Geri Halliwell - It's Raining Men

Something Stupid - Wonderful cover by Robbie and Nicole, better than original and my favourite UK number one from last 20 years. Can't Get You Out Of My Head - a contender for my least favourite her single.
