Format There will be 14 Rounds, as follows:-
Round 1 : 2010
Round 2 : 2011
Round 3 : 2012
Round 4 : 2013
Round 5 : 2014
Round 6 : 2015
Round 7 : 2016
Round 8 : 2017
Round 9 : 2018
Round 10 : 2019
Round 11 : Repechage 1
Round 12 : Repechage 2
Round 13 : Worst Track of the 2010s
Round 14 : Grand Final
The two Repechage rounds are your opportunity to enter two tracks which you wish you'd entered originally, which were your second choice for a year, and/or which you are amazed no-one else entered. I will only be asking for your Repechage choices after Round 10 starts, so you will know what other people entered in Rounds 1 to 10, and you will know which artists and genres of music are doing well. Therefore, for the ultra-competitive, it will be an opportunity to make up ground on the leader board. The Repechage songs can come from any year between 2010 and 2019. Think of it as a Last Chance Saloon.
Each round will last one week. There will be six days for voting, then 24 hours for speculation and discussion, followed by the results show. Results shows will probably be on Tuesday evenings.
The Grand Final will comprise of the winning tracks from rounds 1 to 12, plus the four highest scoring non-winners (based on average points per voter, so that songs entered in rounds which have more voters do not get an advantage).
There will, of course, be a Leader Board competition amongst entrants to see whose selections are most popular. This will be based on Rounds 1 to 13 only. The Grand Final will not count towards the Entrant Leader Board.
Rules Participation - You can enter as many or as few rounds as you wish, but my preference is that you enter every round.
- You must vote in any round you enter. Failure to do so will result in a points penalty.
- You must submit all of your entries for rounds 1 to 10 before the competition starts. Thereafter no changes will be permitted.
- I will invite entries for the two Repechage Rounds while Round 10 is in progress.
- Round 13's entries can be submitted at any stage up to the end of Round 12.
- All entries need to be submitted with a free-to-view video clip.
- Entries by PM to me.
Which Year ? Obviously, the 2010s were characterised by tracks often charting the week their parent album was released. Many of them subsequently reached a peak when promoted as singles. With so many albums being released in October and November, this often meant that tracks entered the chart in one year, and peaked the following year.
- Therefore, I am willing to accept entries based on (i) when the parent album was released; (ii) when the track first appeared in the weekly Top 75; or (iii) when it peaked. However, if a track is entered by two participants but in different years, (iii) the year it peaked will take priority.
- The competition is designed for tracks from the 2010s. Do not abuse this. I know "Fairytale Of New York" was a big hit every year in the 2010s, but don’t try entering it. I don't want to see remixes of old tracks, or mash-ups of two old tracks, either. But a radical reworking is OK, as is a mash-up with a 2010s track, or a 2010s cover of an older song. Of course, per the previous comment, an album track from 2009 that was a hit in 2010 is fine.
Duplicates This is where the Mission Statement comes into play. I really want people to enter their absolute favourite tracks, without inhibition.
- Therefore
duplicates are allowed. If two (or three or four or more) people enter the same track in the same year, then they all get that track. The only disadvantage is that none of the people who entered it will be allowed to vote for their own track, so it may have one (or two or three or more) fewer voters. In the participants league table, you will both (or all) score the points according to which position it finished in. So, if it comes top, you'll both (or all) get the winners' points.
- However, you may choose to opt out of this rule. If you do not want to have a duplicate with someone else, then when you submit your entries to me, please state clearly "Replace Duplicates" on the PM.
-- If a song is entered by two people, and neither of them says "Replace Duplicates" then they both get that song.
-- If a song is entered by two people, and one of them says "Replace Duplicates" then that participant will be asked for a substitute, but the participant who did not say "Replace Duplicates" gets their original entry.
-- If a song is entered by two people, and both of them say "Replace Duplicates" then I will flip a coin. One of them will get the song, and one will be asked for a substitute.
Hope that is clear. If not, please say so, and I'll try to explain it again.
Remember also, there will be two Repechage Rounds, so you can still enter your two favourite back-up songs if they aren't entered by someone else and aren't needed to replace duplicates.
Scoring - I will decide the scoring system when I know how many participants there are. But it will be a traditional Haven system, so something like 20-15-12-10-9-8… With a few 0s for your least favourite entries.
- You cannot vote for your own entry, except in the Grand Final.
- If you enter a song and do not vote, you will be deducted the maximum score.
- Non-participants are encouraged to vote.
- Ties will be broken via a countback - i.e. most 1sts, then most 2nds, then most 3rds, and so on.
As Host - I will be entering tracks in each round. However, I will not be playing to win. I will select my songs after everyone else has entered from a long-list I have already compiled. I will restrict myself to songs and artists that no-one else has entered in any round, therefore avoiding the risk of choosing spoilers.
- I will also be voting, but I will allocate my points before I reveal the entries in each round.
Discussion In The Thread Because of the two Repechage Rounds, and Round 13 - the Worst Song Round - I intend to be extremely strict about discussion in the thread.
Note also, that there will be a 24 hours window between the deadline for voting and the results show, for discussion.
- Firstly, no specific discussion about the entries in the round until we are into the 24 hour window. And no hints either. For example, it will be OK to say "good selection of songs" or "disappointed with the lack of dance music this year" but not OK to say "the death metal fan is going to be disappointed", or "I think XXX has better songs than the one entered" until we are into the 24 hour discussion window.
- However, once the 24 hour discussion window opens, you can say what you like, but only about the songs in that round.
- At no stage can you reveal what your back-up choices were, because we still have the Repechage Rounds to come.
- At no stage can you say "XXX artist should have entered YYY song instead", because it might be coming up in a later year, or it might be the intention of a participant to enter it in Rounds 11, 12 or 13.
- If you break the discussion rule, I will make points deductions from the participant leader board. And the points deductions will be doubled for each trangression. You have been warned.
Predicta I am delighted that
greendemon will be hosting a Haven Time Machine 2010s Predicta.
If I've missed anything, or any of the above is not clear, please do not hesitate to let me know.
