The format proposed by the step 2 leagues to complete the season were utterly ridiculous and could almost have been designed to ensure it was rejected. They wanted to make sure that no side started more than six points behind the play-off places and that no teams would be relegated from step 1. The latter would have meant a 25-team top division.

And yet football is back next month at the lower levels? As my local team in the NCEL was saying how they're looking forward to playing again. Not sure if they're planning to finish the season? Just had a read of the NCEL news page, and it seems there aren't any league games, just some mini tournament, and no spectators allowed in until mid May, despite the fact you can socially distance at these grounds when there's only 1-200 in there. No point playing of they cant have fans to generate income.

Very sad news
Peter Lorimer: Leeds United's record goalscorer dies aged 74
Leeds United's all-time record goalscorer Peter Lorimer has died aged 74, the club have announced.
The former Scotland international scored 238 goals in 705 appearances for Leeds over two spells spanning 23 years.
He won two league titles, the FA Cup and League Cup with Leeds under legendary manager Don Revie.
Leeds announced "with great sadness" that Lorimer had died on Saturday morning "following a long-term illness.
"Peter's contribution to Leeds United will never be forgotten and his passing leaves another huge hole in the Leeds United family," read a statement.
"He will always remain a club icon and his legacy at Elland Road will live on."

Brighton 3 Newcastle 0
I've seen some ineffectual Newcastle performances this season but possibly none as ineffectual as this one. In a must win game we never got going against a Brighton team who were up for the challenge. Thankfully Fulham have looked less than convincing in some recent games as the only thing that will save us from relegation is if they continue to lose games. We never look like we are going to score let alone win a game.

I wonder what price you can get on Newcastle finishing below the other two north-east teams next season...?

Rebecca Welch has become the first woman to be appointed to referee a Football League match. She will take charge of Harrogate v Port Vale on Monday. Here is she is running the line at the 2012 Wearside League Cup Final between Stockton Town and Ryhope Colliery Welfare:

Things have got worse for Dover... www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/56544033The chairman said he withdrew them from the rest of the season to save the club and I do feel sorry for them, they seem to have been hit by COVID more than others, but I still can't quite believe things are as bad as they are. They've never had massive crowds. Wonder if they'll revert back to being part time now given that it's going to be hard to stay up next season. In other news despite the pandemic Maidenhead still seem to be pushing forward with their new stadium plans! Of particular interest to me as its an area of the town I know better and imagine there would be parking available (and if not there's other options which I've never been convinced of at the current ground) so I'd be more inclined to drive (getting the train is at least as good an option atm as ground is very close to the station).

I thought Dover had said that they would take whatever punishment the league handed out - including demotion out of the National League. Therefore, it seems odd that they are now proposing to appeal against this decision which doesn't even involve them being relegated one division.

A £40,000 fine for a club that cant afford to pay its players or run due to Covid does seem a little backward to me though
A bit like treating an obese person by feeding them cheeseburgers or teaching a child how to not fall off their bike by pushing them off their bike, points deduction yes, demotion in serious cases ok but I've never understood fining clubs in financial ruin

I don't know the details, but I suspect the thinking is that Dover have gained a financial advantage compared to the other clubs by refusing to play, and that the fine levels the playing field. The reality, I guess, is that Dover have gained less of an disadvantage compared to those that continued to fulfil their fixtures. I presume that every National League club has lost money by continuing to play (and thus incur expenses), which does beg the question, why didn't they all follow Dover's lead ?

There's also a vote of 'no confidence' in the National League's board being put forward by its member clubs, though it only seems to be step 2 clubs publicly supporting it so far. 16 clubs from the North/South divisions were fined for not fulfilling fixtures, even though the season was then declared void.

This is the national league conference we're talking about, from our spell in there, it was run by utter incompetent clowns who were never ever wrong, even when they were proved wrong.

It's very tight down at the bottom of the Premier League. Sheffield Utd continue to drift towards inevitable relegation. West Brom had a wonderfully bizarre result yesterday, beating Chelsea 5-2 at Stamford Bridge. Brighton have lost, Newcastle drew and Fulham lost yet again. Thankfully Fulham's good run of results is now a distant memory and they are still 3 points adrift of Newcastle. We deserved a draw with Spurs but we really need to be winning games instead of drawing. 4 draws out of the last 5 games, combined with Fulham losing 4 of the last 5 games has helped keep us just above the relegation zone.
Next weekend sees Fulham at home to Wolves (the latter can help ease any relegation fears with a win) on Friday night, Newcastle face a tough test away to Burnley on Saturday while Brighton are at home to Everton on the Monday.

If you want to stay up, then Burnley are the sort of team you need to be beating, but this is Newcastle we are talking about. Stags still aren't safe, but hopefully Southend and Grimsby will carry on being worse than us, because I dont know where our next win is coming from. Bit worrying that Clough cant get these players playing, because half of them will still be here next season as well. Exeter Newport and Stevenage next three games for us, = 0 points.

Here is she is running the line at the 2012 Wearside League Cup Final between Stockton Town and Ryhope Colliery Welfare: Interesting when you look into this that Amy Fearn/Rayner actually did it over 10 years ago, but she didn't start the match. On 9 February 2010 Fearn became the first woman to take full control of a Football League match as the match referee. The original referee Tony Bates suffered a calf strain, and Fearn, as senior assistant on the day took over for the last 20 minutes of Coventry's 1-0 Championship win over Nottingham Forest at the Ricoh Arena. In 2013, she became the first woman to referee an FA Cup Game in the Main Draw.
