-- ( -- ) Mr Blue - Fleetwoods -- ( -- ) I Loves You Porgy - Nina Simone
There are 2 that didn't get in. Whilst I like Nina Simone generally this one does drag on a bit. We can see if she charts next week though.
Frank Sinatra remains on top and is joined in the chart by two other Frankies. Also by Paul Anka, who later on will write English lyrics to a song Frank Sinatra will go on and make very famous.

Pulling a couple in from last week. There were 2 others this week but they were considered even worse. In fact I removed a number of songs from this week's playlist.
Andy Williams was among those who didn't get in this week. The other some Mormon choir singing Glory Glory Hallelujan, and the Kingston Trio had a song based on that too which also got pulled (though not this week).

Frank Sinatra now 5 weeks at #1 but along comes Cliff and it looks like he will have "high hopes" of taking over next week. He even has another entry lower down. Bo Diddley doesn't make it in next week. In spite of his legendary status I don't quite get this...

Cliff Richard back at #1. Eddie Cochran gets the highest entry with a song that was later covered by the Sex Pistols in 1979. The Paul Evans song was also covered, firstly by the Avons within a short time and was a UK hit and later by Timmy Mallett as Bombalurina.

-- ( -- ) Old Shep - Clinton Ford
After a lot of stagnation the new ones are coming and that is shown near the top. I was just thinking though how "Somethin' Else" by Eddie Cochran wouldn't have had "Friggin' In The Riggin'" on the B-side...
New in at #3, I view this somewhat differently than I did when I started the retro charts in February 2015 and Carol was still in my life. Still it has to get to #1 really.. it was listed originally as my first #1 of 1960 but it won't be, which shows why I have to replay the first few charts. Sorry Bobby Darin but "Mack The Knife" didn't even chart for you.. I had that at #2 last time. He did get to #1 with "Dream Lover" though.
Third new entry is by Guy Mitchell for whom this is his final chart hit, his career won't make it into the 1960s (unless this is still in the chart). Had I covered the whole 1950s he may have had quite a few number ones, as it is he did manage 2 in 1956. Maybe "Feet Up", "She Wears Red Feathers" and if I go back even further possible "There's A Pawn Shop On The Corner".. he actually made some quite jolly songs. "Heartaches By The Number" reached #1 in the USA and #5 in the UK. (I do not intend to do early 50s charts at this point in time. The purpose was to get Elvis's full career, not Guy Mitchell's. At least he had two #1s, it's Johnnie Ray who would probably gain more by me going back further).
That "Old Shep" song about a dying dog is .. sorry even Elvis wouldn't have got his version into my chart. It's an old country song dating back much further. Perhaps John Noakes should have recorded it - ok so he probably can't sing..

1 ( 3 ) Oh Carol - Neil Sedaka < 1st #1 > 2 ( 2 ) Somethin' Else - Eddie Cochran 3 ( 1 ) Travellin' Light - Cliff Richard (#1[2]) 4 ( 6 ) Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat - Paul Evans 5 ( 11 ) Heartaches By The Number - Guy Mitchell

The pressure on the top was too much for Cliff Richard to hold on and he falls to #3 as Neil Sedaka takes over. "Oh Carol" came top of a big list when I first did retro charts, but there will be a different song at #1 the first 3 weeks of 1960.
The highest new entry is Emile Ford's UK #1 which was Christmas number one that year, but is a much older song. That song was later covered by Shaky, and the second highest entry was later covered by a group called the 5-6-7-8's. Misty is a far older song even than 1959, but Ray Stevens' version was a bigger hit in my chart.

Only on 7 November but so many of these I had put in my "first" chart of 2 January 1960 which will look completely different this time around, however things will eventually "catch up". Most of them will peak higher too. "Be My Guest" was only listed as a #11 peak when I did the chart before.

14 November 1959
1 ( 1 ) Oh Carol - Neil Sedaka < 3rd week at #1 > 2 ( 4 ) What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For - Emile Ford & The Checkmates 3 ( 2 ) Somethin' Else - Eddie Cochran (#2[3]) 4 ( 3 ) Travellin' Light - Cliff Richard (#1[2]) 5 ( -- ) Rawhide - Frankie Laine
6 ( 12 ) Be My Guest - Fats Domino 7 ( 7 ) Woo Hoo - Rock-A-Teens 8 ( 5 ) Heartaches By The Number - Guy Mitchell (#5) 9 ( 9 ) We Got Love - Bobby Rydell 10 ( 14 ) Dance With Me - Drifters
11 ( 8 ) Treble Chance - Joe Mr Piano Henderson (#8) 12 ( -- ) Love Potion No. 9 - Clovers 13 ( 6 ) Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat - Paul Evans (#4) 14 ( 11 ) In The Mood - Ernie Fields Orchestra (#11) 15 ( -- ) Always - Sammy Turner
16 ( 16 ) So Many Ways - Brook Benton 17 ( 20 ) The Enchanted Sea - Islanders 18 ( 10 ) Lonesome - Chris Barber (#5) 19 ( 17 ) Misty - Johnny Mathis (#17) 20 ( 22 ) Unforgettable - Dinah Washington
21 ( 19 ) Danny Boy - Conway Twitty (#20) 22 ( 15 ) The Angels Listened In - Crests (#13) 23 ( 13 ) High Hopes - Frank Sinatra (#1[5]) 24 ( 18 ) But Not For Me - Ella Fitzgerald (#15) 25 ( 21 ) You Were Mine - Fireflies (#19)
-- ( 23 ) Dynamite - Cliff Richard (#9) -- ( 24 ) Hold Back Tomorrow - Miki & Griff (#14) -- ( 25 ) Til I Kissed You - Everly Brothers (#2[4])
So "Oh Carol" by Neil Sedaka remains on top to be at #1 on a chart dated 14 November. 1959 was also a year like 2016 in the calendar, i.e. it was also 13th Cheshvan both years.
When I compiled the first 1960 charts "Rawhude" spent 2 weeks at #2 behind "Oh Carol" but now it enters 3 weeks later and has a strong chance of getting to #1, some that Frankie Laine has not managed so far and not sure he would have done with any previous songs anyway.
Note: we've had an instrumental hit called Rawhide by Link Wray earlier in 1959 but it was not the same tune. Quite strange for such an unusual title to provide 2 different hits in the same year. Frankie Laine's song was the theme to the TV series of that name, I guess Link Wray's tune was just inspired by the TV series.

1 ( 1 ) Oh Carol - Neil Sedaka < 4th week at #1 > 2 ( 5 ) Rawhide - Frankie Laine 3 ( 2 ) What Do You Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For - Emile Ford & The Checkmates (#2[1]) 4 ( 6 ) Be My Guest - Fats Domino 5 ( 3 ) Somethin' Else - Eddie Cochran (#2[3])
6 ( 12 ) Love Potion No. 9 - Clovers 7 ( 4 ) Travellin' Light - Cliff Richard (#1[2]) 8 ( -- ) What Do You Want - Adam Faith 9 ( -- ) Reveille Rock - Johnny & The Hurricanes 10 ( 7 ) Woo Hoo - Rock-A-Teens (#7)
11 ( 10 ) Dance With Me - Drifters (#10) 12 ( 15 ) Always - Sammy Turner 13 ( 9 ) We Got Love - Bobby Rydell (#9) 14 ( 8 ) Heartaches By The Number - Guy Mitchell (#5) 15 ( -- ) Nashville Boogie - Bert Weedon
16 ( 17 ) The Enchanted Sea - Islanders 17 ( 11 ) Treble Chance - Joe Mr Piano Henderson (#8) 18 ( -- ) More And More Party Pops - Russ Conway 19 ( 16 ) So Many Ways - Brook Benton (#16) 20 ( 14 ) In The Mood - Ernie Fields Orchestra (#11)
21 ( 20 ) Unforgettable - Dinah Washington (#20) 22 ( 13 ) Seven Little Girls Sitting In The Back Seat - Paul Evans (#4) 23 ( 19 ) Misty - Johnny Mathis (#18) 24 ( -- ) The Village Of St Bernadette - Anne Shelton 25 ( 21 ) Danny Boy - Conway Twitty (#20)
-- ( 18 ) Lonesome - Chris Barber (#5) -- ( 22 ) The Angels Listened In - Crests (#13) -- ( 23 ) High Hopes - Frank Sinatra (#1[5]) -- ( 24 ) But Not For Me - Ella Fitzgerald (#16) -- ( 25 ) You Were Mine - Fireflies (#19)
In the UK the two "What Do You Want" songs were battling at the top. The Adam Faith song clearly sounds to me like an attempt to copy Buddy Holly, both in the song arrangement and his voice. I guess now Buddy's gone, there is room for his British counterpart.
Russ Conway is back to making these party-pop medleys in time for Christmas and Winifred Atwell has one out too. As they're both piano instruments you can't really tell which one is which by listening to them.
Anne Shelton's 100% record looks set to end as her third hit single limps in at #24 after two #1s in 1956.
Reveille Rock gets a new entry at #9 whereas it had one week at #22 last time around on the "first chart" then dropped out. The theory was it was his previous hit and "Red River Rock" which reached #14 was the new one, but actually that one has been and gone here. You never know, after a chart run it may well be #22 on 2 January then drop out on 9 January.

Of this list only Miss Toni Fisher was on my original playlist and that one didn't do that well - #24 on the first chart then out. I'm actually quite excited about getting this year finished and once I've completed 1976 too I'll have linked up to where I started in 1977 all those years back but I'll be re-doing 1977 again too.
As with 1960 I will use the original chart as guidance as to what goes in higher and lower so is will be more an adjustment. With 1960, as soon as I have passed the last one that has a song that has already charted, the charts will simply be as before. As I mentioned, Kookie Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb) appears to be the that "last" one.
Anyway, Frankie Laine number one this week. Next playlist has 5 weeks in it as 2 January 1960 needed its own playlist, it didn't have its own one last time around.

My 1950s retro charts are nearly complete and soon I will be replaying 1960 until it meets a point where what I originally created in 2015 will remain the chart for that year. That is, once all the songs that have already shown up are no longer going to. Also I think at the start of my 1960 playlist I used only the US top 20 but moved to the top 30 shortly after. I'm currently using the top 25 with occasional songs from the 26-30 section, so that a few may appear a week earlier but that will only be a minor adjustment.
The song that was #5 in my first chart of that retro period looks set to be 1959's Christmas number one.
5 December 1959
1 ( 1 ) Rawhide - Frankie Laine < 2nd week at #1 > 2 ( 3 ) What Do You Want - Adam Faith 3 ( -- ) Little White Bull - Tommy Steele 4 ( 2 ) Oh Carol - Neil Sedaka (#1[4]) 5 ( 6 ) Reveille Rock - Johnny & The Hurricanes

co-written by Lionel Bart for a musical film at the time (Tommy the Toreador), Little White Bull brought Tommy Steele to a new generation and he said afterwards parents would take their children to his shows.
Lionel Bart also wrote the #1 "Living Doll" and wrote the musical score for Oliver.
That song, like El Paso, tells a tale. El Paso is one of those love songs that ends with a death, but it's different from the others in that the narrator himself ends up dying, singing it presumably on his death bed.
So many songs this week, those that missed will be thrown back onto next week's playlist but I don't expect Paul Anka to chart. First time around that one was also bottom of the big pile. Strangely last time I rated Hound Dog Man above The Friendly World.
