With the lists for each year of the 1980s posted, it's now time to count down the top 40 for the entire decade.
I've already written about all these songs so I'll be keeping any comments to a minimum.
If a song was released twice, its points have been combined. This includes remixes and re-recordings by the same personnel - so for example the points totals for "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" and "Everybody Wants To Run The World" by Tears For Fears have been combined, but the versions of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid have not.
Position in the decade sales chart is shown in brackets. This has been taken from Wikipedia and I'm not 100% sure of its accuracy.
I'll post the top 100 after I've finished counting down the top 40.
Part 1 (40-36):
40(41) BUCKS FIZZ - The Land Of Make Believe (417 points) Top 40 run: 35-24-10-5-5-2-1-1-2-4-9-19-31
39(32) RENEE & RENATO - Save Your Love (418 points) Top 40 run: 38-24-9-5-3-1-1-1-1-3-13-20-40
38(-) KOOL AND THE GANG - Cherish (419 points) Top 40 run: 37-22-13-7-5-4-4-4-5-7-8-14-18-20-30-39

36(17) IRENE CARA - Fame (421 points) Top 40 run: 4-1-1-1-2-2-3-6-10-20-39-37-40

yes I guess Desire (shortly to hit our retro charts) run was worse than Happy Talk as both spent 3 weeks in the top 3 but Happy Talk had two of those at number one.
33-1-1-3-16-30 3-1-2-17-30-37
so comparing them by big week downward:
1-1-3-16-30-33 1-2-3-17-30-37
3 weeks where they were the same and 3 where Desire was in a lower position.

Thank you Panda. I’m archiving these in the sub forum for future prosperity when finished. I’m dreading that awful Judy Boucher song to make an appearance as it felt like it was in the Top 10 for the entire of 1987.

Two my "Song of the Year" are back to back in this list.
Firstly The Land of Make Believe [my # 1 from 1981) and after it Save Your Love (my # 1 from 1982).

Which equates to a 10-point difference. The 10 lowest-scoring no.1s, whose chart run was entirely in the 80s were: U2 - Desire (174) Captain Sensible - Happy Talk (184) Ferry Aid - Let It Be (218) Blondie - Call Me (223) Gerry Marsden, Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson & Christians - Ferry 'Cross The Mersey (224) Nicole - A Little Peace (226) Bucks Fizz - My Camera Never Lies (229) Timelords - Doctorin' The Tardis (233) Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know? (236) Simple Minds - Belfast Child (237) I expect those numbers will be obliterated once we get deep into the 1990s.

I can't find the original topics on these, but maybe you used some mod power to hide them so we can't use them to work out what is going to come up. Of course there are songs that crossed between years which will be in here but weren't in any of the years before

Part 7 (10-6):
10(6) WHAM! - Last Christmas (501 points) Top 40 run: 2-2-2-2-2-3-8-11-21-33-38 / 32-10-6-6-14-36
9(7) CULTURE CLUB - Karma Chameleon (528 points) Top 40 run: 3-1-1-1-1-1-1-4-8-9-18-29-28-32-35-35-30-35
8(9) JENNIFER RUSH - The Power Of Love (548 points) Top 40 run: 36-15-2-1-1-1-1-1-2-4-5-10-27-21-22-35-33-35
The highest placed song on the list by a female solo artist.
7(1) BAND AID - Do They Know It's Christmas? (566 points) Top 40 run: 1-1-1-1-1-2-9-17-30-38-37 / 24-6-3-3-4-13
As previously mentioned, this total doesn't include 1989's Band Aid II. Had the scores been combined, it would have been no.2 on this list.

Of course there are songs that crossed between years which will be in here but weren't in any of the years before They are in the Rates and Polls Retro archive forum, as we wanted to archive Rates and Polls so didn’t fill up Retro with not actually any Retro chat themed countdowns, we’ve hardly buried it. Can you not see them if you click and look at the sub forum? We don’t “hide” anything.

Part 8 (5-1):
5(4) FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - Two Tribes (629 points) Top 40 run: 1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-1-3-5-9-13-17-29-34
The longest-running no.1 of the decade but only no.5 on the points list.
4(18) RAY PARKER JR - Ghostbusters (631 points) Top 40 run: 18-6-3-2-2-2-4-8-14-19-27-32 / 33-15-7-6-8-7-16-20-26-32-35-31
3(13) NEW ORDER - Blue Monday (644 points) Top 40 run: 37-24-17-14-14-12-13-17-18-26-32 / 37-20-12-10-9-12-15-18-25-38 / 10-3-5-5-9-20-34
This includes the '88 remix, which I've posted the video for this time. That third run provided an extra 203 points. Without it, the song would have been at no.28 on this list.
2(3) STEVIE WONDER - I Just Called To Say I Love You (652 points) Top 40 run: 3-2-1-1-1-1-1-1-2-4-9-14-19-25-28-34-35-34-21-23-24
1(2) FRANKIE GOES TO HOLLYWOOD - Relax (1142 points) Top 40 run: 35-6-2-1-1-1-1-1-2-3-6-16-21-23-21-29-29-31-26-24-21-17-16-11-5-3-2-2-3-3-3-6-7-12-20-22-29
If you've been paying attention throughout this series, you'll have guessed this was the no.1 for the decade, thanks to its rollercoaster chart run that lasted 37 weeks inside the top 40 (and a total of 52 inside the top 75). That runghave the track a winning margin of 490 points over Stevie Wonder. Things should be a lot closer in the end-of-decade chart for the 1990s. A quarter of the tracks in the 1980s top 40 reached their chart peak in 1984, while there were none from 1980.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. It must have taken you ages, and it's been very interesting. Thank you, glad people find it interesting. I can get through an entire year in the space of a few hours if I have the free time and no distractions, though normally I'd do one year over two or three days/nights. I started towards the end of the (first) lockdown so I was racing through them quite quickly but things have slowed down a bit due to work. I've started on the 1990s now. The 1990 list is compiled and ready to be posted but I like to be one year ahead so I will probably do 1991 as well before I post the 1990 list.
