Just wondering how many there are. I give you for example 25 June 1969:
1. Beatles - Ballad Of John & Yoko
2. Edwin Hawkins Singers - Oh Happy Day
3. Jethro Tull - Living In The Past
4. Booker T & The MGs - Time Is Tight
5. Elvis Presley - In The Ghetto
6. Tommy Roe - Dizzy
7. Thunderclap Newman - Something In The Air
8. Beach Boys - Break Away
9. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Proud Mary
10. Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - The Tracks Of My Tears
***
Not only is that top ten brilliant, but it is hugely varied, with beat, gospel, folk, instrumental, soul, rock, and Motown; and also legendary. The least famous name is at no. 2 and even that track is iconic.

Having spent the last two months looking at a series of top tens, I can safely say I haven't come across one as good as that, although I have at least had some where I have been able to list three or four great songs just from the top ten. I've had other charts where I've struggled to find three from the top forty!

There are some years in the 80s, like 1984 for instance, where I don't think there is hardly anything that charted in that year that I don't really like

For me the best ever UK top 10 was week ending 22 November 1986
1(1) Berlin - Take My Breath Away 2(2) Kim Wilde - You Keep Me Hangin' On 3(4) Mel & Kim - Showing Out (Get Fresh For The Weekend) 4(5) Swing Out Sister - Break Out 5(14) Europe - The Final Countdown 6(8) Spandau Ballet - Through The Barricades 7(11) Bon Jovi - Livin' On Prayer 8(3) Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian 9(9) Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush - Don't Give Up 10(13) Red Box - For America

My second selection is the week ending 5 June 1982: 1(1) Madness - House Of Fun2(2) Adam Ant - Goody Two Shoes 3(16) Soft Cell - Torch 4(3) Yazoo - Only You 5(6) ABC - The Look Of Love 6(5) Tight Fit - Fantasy Island 7(9) Junior - Mama Used To Say 8(12) Duran Duran - Hungry Like The Wolf 9(7) PhD - I Won't Let You Down 10(4) Nicole - A Little Peace Nicole may not be "brilliant" but it's not bad enough for me to spoil a great chart and in any case it has nearly dropped out. If only Blondie had sold a few more, they were #12 that week with Island Of Lost Souls, that would make it a great top 10. (Patrice Rushen was #11 with Forget Me Nots, down from #8)
Not as varied in style as vastariner's chart but Nicole, together with Tight Fit, do provide some "light pop", in addition to synth-based music by Yazoo and more dance-orientated music by Junior.

I still haven't worked out who is being serious in this thread, and who is taking the p*ss.
Tommy Roe - Dizzy Steps - Last Thing On My Mind Berlin - Take My Breath Away
I'd tell you everything I knew if you played those three to me in rotation during an interrogation.

Is Steps the weak link in that 1998 chart? I think Boyzone at #4 is, and All Saints don't really impress me with those cover versions. What do you have against "Take My Breath Away"? Or even Dizzy?

Might be the best top 5 of all time. It falls off pretty badly at 6 and 7. And 10 is abysmal.

But The Wombles are ok If someone played the Wombles to me under interrogation, I'd be able to retreat into a very happy place from my childhood, and hold out for weeks. I read all of the Wombles books, as well as loving the tv series.

Nothing wrong with The Wombles. Killer glam rock choons. And Chris Spedding's flying V. What's not to like?

Fantasy Island and A Little Peace - both were a big # 1 hits in my chart and I will rate them as 9 / 10 songs.
