I still love the Geri Halliwell story behind Some Girls. Good Old Days may not! Do tell! So the story goes, and someone can correct me if I’m wrong, Richard X had Some Girls written ready for Sport Relief 2004 - but as it was a kinda sexy song was surprised it got chosen. When Geri then heard that la Stevens was chosen to record it she locked him in his car to persuade him otherwise, and wrote another song back to convince him. Then Annie (another Richard X songwriter for her brilliant album) also wrote a song about it called Me Plus One.

"I Have No Talent So Rely On Someone Else To Write Me A Hit"?

A song written about Geri, about her not getting a song she wanted.

I dislike Annie, but even didn't know about this story.

I dislike Annie, but even didn't know about this story. Oh I really quite like Annie, her new album is really good - she originally recorded with her boyfriend who passed away really early on from a heart defect before Chewing Gum came out, but recorded “Greatest Hit” with. Anniemal is a great album.

Samantha Mumba - Gotta Tell You One of those one-album wonders who seemed to be everywhere for a year, Irish singer Samantha Mumba genuinely showed much promise with a few very competent and infectious pop singles, of which this was her first. It's one of those pop songs that sounds so refreshing when you haven't heard it in a while and has certainly brightened up a few minutes of a miserable Sunday afternoon.

Bombunk MC's - Freestyler Oh, now this is a classic example of why it becomes more interesting when you start to move away from the #1s. I used to love this back in the day (some 20 years ago can you believe!) but had totally forgotten its existence until now. It's just a banger really, and it reinforces my realisation that 2000 was a great year for dance music!

True Steppers And Dane Bowers Featuring Victoria Beckham - Out Of Your Mind This is one of those tunes that was absolutely huge at the time but its popularity was very short-lived and I can't recall ever hearing it anywhere in quite a lot of years. The song was part of a well-publicised race to #1 with the genuine dance anthem 'Groovejet', which even at the time was obviously in a completely different league to this, but 'Out Of Your Mind' hasn't aged particularly well and it's now hard to believe that this could ever have been a serious contender.

Sonique - Sky Oh now we're back on track! This was a fantastic follow-up single to 'It Feels So Good' and I like it almost as much as it. I think I entered it in one round of Dance Idol but I can't remember how well it did - not particularly well I don't think but I don't care, I love this sort of trancey dance music - especially when it has a killer chorus like this does!

Kylie Minogue - On A Night Like This This is one Kylie song that always grabs my full attention right from the very first note! It is the follow-up to her big #1 'Spinning Around', but to me this is absolutely light years ahead (see what I did there?) and would easily be in my all-time Kylie top 3.

Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 This German techno tune was massive in 2000, and I'm kicking myself for not putting it on my Halloween playlist yesterday (as 'Zombie Nation' is repeated throughout, although that is actually the name of the act and not the track). I suppose there's not that much to it really but the main hook, which is repeated over again is insanely addictive.

Robbie Williams/Kylie Minogue - Kids 'Kids' was featured on both Robbie's and Kylie's latest albums and was streets ahead of 'Rock DJ' but nowhere near as good as 'On A Night Like This' - I'd say it's probably about on par with 'Spinning Around' though. I like it actually, and the two artists compliment each other well. I don't think it did either of their careers any harm.

Baha Men - Who Let The Dogs Out Well I suppose it's been a while since we've had anything of novelty value, but I did have a bit of a soft spot for this canine inspired reggae fusion hit at the time. It's still ok - just a bit of fun really!

Martine McCutcheon - I'm Over You I used to be ever so slightly obsessed with Martine McCutcheon and was gutted when her character Tiffany was killed off in Eastenders. I was also mad on her first album, and then she came back with a poppier sound in this single and it showed huge promise for the second album. Sadly that second album was a massive disappointment, but this remains a great pop song.

Daft Punk - One More Time French electronic sensations Daft Punk had done some good stuff before this, but I think this was the one that propelled them into the big time and they just seemed to have that winning formula that won over serious music fans as well as dance music fans. A really great tune.

Westlife - What Makes A Man Surely there's only one thing that makes a man?... Anyway, this pretty bland affair was denied the Christmas #1 spot in 2000 by Bob the Builder - and I hate to say it but the best song of the two won. I have liked a few of Westlife's original songs, but this one has very little to make me recommend it.

Steps - It's The Way You Make Me Feel Who would have thought nearly twenty years ago, just before they announced their split, that Steps would be going strong again in 2020. I don't mind this, but there's something about the tune of the chorus that sounds really familiar to something else and it's niggling me as to what that song is. Either way, it's not unpleasant in any way but not a favourite of mine either.
