IIO - Rapture Nadia Ali was the voice of iiO, and this was one of those dance tracks that was completely written by the artists, without any use of samples, and it manages to combine a really good pop song with an insanely infectious repeated hook.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor Sophie's solo career hit new heights with this modern disco anthem, which is still popular to this day and I have to say I find it impossible not to smile a bit when this comes on. The song suits Sophie's voice perfectly, and is just the perfect party song.

Gordon Haskell - How Wonderful You Are The recently departed Gordon Haskell had the surprise Christmas #2 of 2001, after being heavily promoted by Radio 2. I must admit at the time I did find it a bit sickly sweet, but I can sort of see its appeal now in retrospect - it's just a simple love song of the kind you'd expect to hear in a piano bar or something. I certainly prefer it to the Robbie Williams cover that was #1 anyway.

Puretone - Addicted To Bass I'm not always a fan of drum and bass, it depends what it is, but when it's a vocal track the heavy bassline can really add to the effect of it, like on this one. It's a bit of a forgotten club banger really, and very good to hear again.

P!nk - Get The Party Started It's a bit ironic that I'm listening to a song called 'Get The Party Started' on the first day of lockdown, but here we are. This was the first single from P!nk's second album, and she had moved totally away from the fresh R&B sound of her first. There were even better singles to come from that album, but this was a good taster for it, and the anthemic nature of it no doubt helped her get her biggest hit to date at that point. Over-familiarity is probably the reason why this is one of the P!nk hits that I go back to the least, but I still enjoy it whenever I do hear it.

Rapture, Murder on the dancefloor and Addicted to bass are still on my playlist. I have never been a fan on Get the party started, the rest of the album is great though, one of my favourite albums of all time.

Still annoyed this did badly in Time Machine, it's a classic!

A1 - Caught In The Middle It's hard to believe this is the same group who gave us that lukewarm version of 'Take On Me', because this is actually really good. It's such a more gorwn-up sound than their earlier singles, so it's a shame that they only had one more hit single after this, just as they were getting good!

No Doubt - Hey Baby No Doubt were a great band, although Gwen Stefani was always destined to be bigger in her own right. I must admit I prefer when they do songs like 'Don't Speak' and 'Just A Girl' (even 'It's My Life' suited her voice perfectly), because this one sounded a bit too poppy and throwaway at the time and I found it got annoying quite quickly. I have to say it's aged better than I would have expected though and I'm enjoying it a lot more this time around - even though it's still not one of my favourites of theirs.

S Club 7 - You I didn't even remember this one by the title, but as soon as it started (with the chorus) I recognised it and must admit to liking it. It makes me think of birds singing on a bright spring morning (don't ask me why!!). It reminds me a bit of 'Reach' too. Yeah, a pleasant surprise.

Shakira - Whenever, Wherever This was like a breath of fresh air when it was released in 2002, with it's fresh Latin groove and stomping vocals. I can remember hearing it on the radio and just thinking "Wow - I need that record!" in the days when you had to wait several weeks for a single to be released after it started getting airplay. It still sounds majestic now and remains a favourite from the era.

Ali G and Shaggy - Me Julie I can't pretend I was ever a massive Ali G fan but I did sort of get his humour, and I did like a bit of Shaggy. Unfortunately there's not a great deal to this song and it doesn't do either of them much justice. It's ok, but I'm struggling to see how it reached #2.

Steps - Chain Reaction It's hard to listen to this without comparing it to the Diana Ross original, because while it may not be the worst cover version I've ever heard, Steps do very little to change it up and make it their own. I can't really think of an occasion where I'd opt to listen to this version over the original if I'm honest.
Very hard for me - the Diana Ross version was the first single I ever bought - but I love the video to this so much as it’s ridiculous, plus it has a dance routine - I can’t pick between the two - I’d be waking up in the middle of the night palpitating to choose. Let’s just just say the Gibbs wrote a great song whatever the version.

Brilliant single, and spent hard cold cash on her previous albums on Amazon that were not great or nor I could understand. Whenever Wherever, however should have been number one. By a mile.

Britney Spears - I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman What are you then?... This was a single from Britney's third album 'Britney', and I always felt it didn't sound much like a single. It was fine as an album track, but it's not up there with her classic ballads like 'Sometimes'. That said, it entered at #2 so what do I know?

X-press 2 Featuring David Byrne - Lazy Oh yes, I used to love this one! It's just a great laid-back house record that is surprisingly Talking Heads singer David Byrne's biggest chart hit. This is like the prefect sunday morning song, when you still want it to be the night before but you don't want to move!

*NSYNC Featuring Nelly - Girlfriend I actually know very little about *NSYNC's music, including this one which was actually their biggest hit in the UK. I can't really think why it was their biggest, aside from the fact it has Nelly on it, because it hasn't even got that much of a hook. It's about as tuneful as an average New Kids on the Block record really.

S Club Juniors - One Step Closer I'm not really sure who S Club Juniors were aimed at - Was it people for who S Club 7 were too adult for? It reminds me a bit of Minipops, who were rightly left firmly in the 80s, and while it's quite a catchy tune there is something a bit cringey about it.

Kylie Minogue - Love At First Sight On the day following Kylie's 'Disco'-tastic new album it feels quite appropriate to listen to something that would fit right on there! 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' was obviously the big one from her 'Fever' album, but there's only so many times you can listen to the 'La La Las' before they get old. This one however never seems to age, and I never tire of it either - it's just classic disco Kylie and then some!
