Yeh, I know. This thread has a truly crap title. If anyone comes up with a better one, let me know please.
With other people running great threads here in the Retro Lounge section - favourite bands by letter of the alphabet, #1s on my birthday, Top 250 albums, all the #2s of the 21st century, all the million sellers, etc - I thought it was time for me to pick a slightly randomised theme and do a rundown. So, here it is...
Being obsessive, I have my entire music collection logged on a database. It currently has over 33,000 entries.
If I sort by the song titles alphabetically, then I have discovered 29 different first words occur more than 100 times. So, here's a rundown of the Top 30 most common first words, picking two of my favourite songs from each set.
(Note that I do not use "A" or "The" at the start of titles on my database. So, for example, "The Last Time" by the Rolling Stones is catalogued as "Last Time, The". "Last" is the 32nd most popular first word, with 93 songs, including Last Christmas, Last Night A DJ Saved My Life, Last Of The Famous International Playboys, Last Train To Trans Central, etc. etc.)
One word and two songs per day, every day through November, as we count down from #30 to #1. I'm going to be selecting from my favourites, but I won't necessarily be picking the absolute favourite, if it is already over-familiar at Haven.
Hope that's clear. In truth, it doesn't matter if it isn't.

"It Doesn't Matter Anymore" is one of the song-titles to have given two #1s in my chart with different songs, with Buddy Holly and Puressence. I'm not sure if Puressence is in your music collection.

Some great songs mentioned so far. Mine would probably be the predictable 'It Must Have Been Love' by Roxette.

Assuming "It's" is a different word thus excluding those, a couple of other big #1s from my chart came up:
- It Doesn't Have To Be Beautiful - Slow Club (#1 for 5 weeks in 2009)
- It Could've Been Me - The Boy Least Likely To ft Gwenno (#1 for 4 weeks in 2013)

I have quite a few "It" in my collection, I'm presuming "It's" are excluded for this countdown.
My faves, a few you have already listed eg, Madness, Marvin Gaye, Hot Chocolate, Buddy Holly
one of mine would be
It Ain't Easy - David Bowie

You can date the performance by how long this song is...the original version had no intro and stopped at the bridge.

29. SWEET :: 101 songs
There are 3 adjectives in the top 30. And I'm totally spoilt for choice with Sweet.
My absolute favourite is:- Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) - Eurythmics
But that gets disqualified from this thread for being overfamiliar.
Other leading contenders:-
Sweet About Me - Gabriella Cilmi Sweet Bird Of Truth - The The Sweet Gene Vincent - Ian Dury Sweet Harmony - Beloved Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Little Sixteen - Chuck Berry Sweet Virginia - Rolling Stones Sweet Sweet Smile - Carpenters
But my two picks this morning are:-
Sweet Memory - Belle Stars Sweet Soul Music - Arthur Conley

Sweet dreams - La bouche Sweet dreams - Beyonce Sweet dreams my LA Ex - Rachel Stevens Sweet like chocolate - Shanks and Bigfoot (the Metro 7 radio edit) Sweet people - Alyosha Sweet sacrifice - Evanescence
What about Sweetheart - Mariah Carey? Does it count? The Sweet escape by Gwen Stefani and Akon? Or Sweetest sin by Jessica Simpson?
So many sweets!
