What Counts?
Nine of the rounds in Cover Idol require the song entered to not be the “original version” – in most cases, this is the first released version of a song, however in the 1950’s and occasionally later on there were often times where multiple versions of a song would chart almost simultaneously and things get a little tricky.
To try and avoid any arguments, all these versions will be classed as the original e.g. both Frankie Laine and David Whitfield released ‘Answer Me’ around the same time in 1953 and neither would be accepted as a cover. A more recent example would be Demi Lovato and Idina Menzel both charting with ‘Let It Go’ at the end of 2013 and into 2014. Again, neither would be accepted as a cover.
The other three rounds have fairly simple criteria and are explained below.
Since we've already had a Beatles covers round in Pot Pourri Idol, I'm not allowing those in this contest.
Duplicates
Like everyone else, I was a huge fan of the way duplicates were dealt with by
Shireblogger in Time Machine 2010’s, and I’ll be keeping that system.
Just like Time Machine, duplicates are allowed. If more than one person enters the same song in the same round, they’ll all get to enter it, however none of them will be allowed to vote for it so it will end up with fewer voters overall.
But, you do get to choose if this happens. If you don’t want to have duplicates with other people, simply tell me you want to Replace Duplicates when you submit your entries. If you want to keep your songs no matter what, say Keep Duplicates. You can also choose to Keep some and Replace others.
- If a song is chosen by two people and one says Keep and the other Replace, the latter gets their next available choice.
- If a song is chosen by two people and both say Replace, then the grid system used in previous contests will decide who has priority and gets to keep it, and the other person will get their next available choice.
- If a song is chosen by two people and both say Keep in the same round, both get the song.
- If a song is chosen by two people and both say Keep in different rounds, then the grid system used in previous contests will decide who has priority and gets to keep it, and the other person will get their next available choice.
Scoring
- Scoring will depend on how many participants we get, but will be the usual Haven way of doing things, I have no intention of rocking the boat.
- Any ties will be resolved via countback – most 1sts, then most 2nds, etc.
- You can’t vote for your own entry.
- Failure to vote will result in a points penalty.
- Non-participants are welcomed as always.
Host
I will be participating and voting, but my songs will be chosen after everyone else’s choices are finalised, and will not be playing to win – not that it usually makes much difference if I am or not!
My votes for each round will be done before the round is posted, and sent to someone else as well.
Discussion
While there aren’t any Repechage rounds here, because there are plenty of songs that could be entered in multiple rounds, or entered into Covervision afterwards, I will be keeping Time Machine’s rules about discussing entries.
Therefore, copied almost verbatim with some very slight alterations, a reiteration of those rules:
“- Firstly, no specific discussion about the entries in the round until we are into the 24 hour window. And no hints either. For example, it will be OK to say "good selection of songs" or "disappointed with the lack of dance music" but not OK to say "the death metal fan is going to be disappointed", or "I think XXX has better songs than the one entered" until we are into the 24 hour discussion window.
- However, once the 24 hour discussion window opens, you can say what you like, but only about the songs in that round.
- At no stage can you reveal what your back-up choices were, because they could show up in other rounds.
- At no stage can you say "XXX artist should have entered YYY song instead", because it might be coming up in a later round.
- If you break the discussion rule, I will make points deductions from the participant leader board. And the points deductions will be doubled for each trangression. You have been warned.”
RoundsRound 1 – Gender SwapAny cover version sung by an act of a different gender to the original lead vocal.
Round 2 – Heavy MetalSend a song that is being covered by a heavy metal/hard rock act, regardless of the genre of the original.

Round 4 – SampledIn this round, send a song that is based around a sample or interpolation of another hit song – it doesn’t have to be a cover and any vocals can be by a different artist from the sample.
Round 5 – Haven Factor FinalistsHaven is obviously a big fan of all these acts – so send a cover version of a song by any Haven Factor finalist - although again, no Beatles covers please. That means the
original should be by Blondie, Pet Shop Boys, The Supremes, Britney Spears, Kirsty MacColl, Kim Wilde, Bee Gees, Melody Club, Prince, The Cure, The Human League, The Beautiful South, Coldplay, Lady Gaga or Kelly Clarkson. No covers of covers those artists did please!
Round 6 – The 70’sSend a cover version (from any decade) of a song whose original version was released during the 70’s.
Round 7 – OriginalsWe’re flipping the script in this round - send the original version of a song that’s better known as a cover.
Round 8 – Live LoungeSend a cover version performance from Radio 1’s long running Live Lounge or something similar (The Saturday Sessions on Radio 2 for example.)
Round 9 – The 80’sSend a cover version (from any decade) of a song whose original version was released during the 80's.
Round 10 – DanceSend a cover version that falls under the genre of ‘dance’.
Round 11 – Mash-UpSend a mash-up – a song created by blending two or more pre-existing songs. Actual bootleg mash-ups only please.
