12) YAZZ AND THE PLASTIC POPULATION - THE ONLY WAY IS UP 992 POINTSThe Only Way Is Up reached the top of the Retro-Chart for a single week in August, not quite achieving the same level of success on the Official Chart, where this ended up as the second biggest song of the year. 11) TAYLOR DAYNE - TELL IT TO MY HEART 1,000 POINTSThe first song to reach the 1,000 points barrier. With only 11 songs this year achieving this standard, this is the lowest number since 1984 when only five songs scored higher than this – an indicator as to how spread our scoring is this year. This pop-dance classic gave Taylor Dayne a four week number one at the start of the year. Subsequent releases have followed the law of diminishing returns with Prove Your Love peaking at number 6 , I’ll Always Love You (number 16) and Don’t Rush Me (number 40) Points Andy 105 Cool Christie 152 Darkstar 0 Earl Purple 12 Kingpin 73 Mark 107 Pop Chart Freak 165 Raliverpool 16 Rubcale 79 Shireblogger 58 Smokeyb 32 Smurfie 57 Thorney 37 Whitneyfan 107 TOTAL POINTS 1,000

8) JANE WIEDLIN - RUSH HOUR 1,075 POINTSFrom one former Go-Go to another as Jane Wiedlin finally makes an appearance on the countdown with Rush Hour, which spent three weeks at the top in August and September. The follow-up Inside A Dream proved to be a bit of a disappointment, peaking at a lowly number 31. 6) BELINDA CARLISLE - HEAVEN IS A PLACE ON EARTH 1,118 POINTSAlthough this only spent two weeks at number one at the start of the year, it’s Belinda’s highest scoring song of the year. Heaven Is a Place on Earth suffered from having its points spread over two years. It actually earned more than 500 points in 1987 (it was the 68th biggest song of that year) – were these points combined with its haul in 1988 it would easily be the biggest song of this year. Its total is so high that it’s nicely placed in the Top Five songs of all time on the 80s chart. This song has huge personal significance for me. Over the last year and a half I’ve lost just over four stones, going from almost morbidly obese to a 'normal' BMI – this is my almost there/‘home-stretch’ song on the rowing machine. I'm also using it in my battle to beat a recently acquired but nightmare bout of OCD. I've never suffered from mental illness before but the incessant lockdowns and on/off home-schooling have clearly taken their toll. I therefore listen to Heaven more now than I ever did during 1988! Points Andy 36 Cool Christie 131 Darkstar 0 Earl Purple 0 Kingpin 167 Mark 136 Pop Chart Freak 46 Raliverpool 0 Rubcale 172 Shireblogger 50 Smokeyb 167 Smurfie 9 Thorney 106 Whitneyfan 98 TOTAL POINTS 1,118

Five songs remaining.....one song left on the countdown not to peak at number one, a dance anthem, a couple of pop classics and yet another number one from the ubiquitous PSBs.

Really interesting to see the spread of points for each song.
Amazingly three gave Belinda's Heaven no points at all and another one single figures.
Still can't work out who's #1!

Really interesting to see the spread of points for each song. Amazingly three gave Belinda's Heaven no points at all and another one single figures. Still can't work out who's #1! To be fair, of the three people who didn't award points to Heaven in 1988, both Earl Purple and Raliverpool awarded over 100 points each to it in 1987. Smurfie only awarded nine points this year but he only started voting again as Heaven was on its way down the chart.

Loving the countdown so far. I'm pretty sure I can work out the song which did not make #1 on the Haven countdown; as well as the other 4 ... But which order are they in....

5 FLEETWOOD MAC – EVERYWHERE 1,132 POINTSA second chart-topper for Fleetwood Mac came in April when Everywhere managed a single week at number one. Tango In The Night has been a huge album for them, providing them with a number one in 1987 for Little Lies and two subsequent Top Ten hits with Big Love and Seven Wonders. 4 S-EXPRESS – THEME FROM S-EXPRESS 1,167 POINTSThe biggest dance song of the year lands at number four on the countdown. With it’s clever sample of Rose Royce’s Is It Love You’re After, The Theme spent three weeks at the top during April and May. Follow-up Superfly Guy also went Top Three in July. 3 PET SHOP BOYS – HEART 1,170 POINTSChris and Neil couldn’t match the success of last year’s biggest song It’s A Sin. Instead Heart will have to make do with third biggest song of 1988 – not bad for the fourth release from Actually. As usual, this picked up points from every single chart, however this is still only the sixth biggest song from the PSBs. Their domination of the Retro-Chart shows no sign of slowing down. Points Andy 109 Cool Christie 49 Darkstar 127 Earl Purple 70 Kingpin 37 Mark 122 Pop Chart Freak 162 Raliverpool 85 Rubcale 17 Shireblogger 123 Smokeyb 120 Smurfie 37 Thorney 54 Whitneyfan 58 TOTAL POINTS 1,170
