It's something of a woke list - given that it misses out the biggest singing star of the pre-war period...
...there are obvious reasons why one would eschew Al Jolson's usual act these days, but there's no denying that he was hugely important in his era.
Not really if you look at the list from the 1960s & beyond an awful lot of huge global hit singles don't make the list; whilst cult classics that barely or failed to chart are far more prevalent.
To give one example of a global #1 smash hit single from the 1980s not in the 1001 list:

Agree , Al Jolson not being included to my surprise. Not sure what they base there thoughts on, but reckon there will be quite a few tracks missing and others that are there will be beggers belief. Pre 50's not my forte so will see when I go through other decades. Although no Vera Lynn? I also feel it seems to be more American based, not may British acts when I skimmed but time will tell. 10 more of pre 50s and think I will jump to 80s chapter as apposed to a chapter of 50s to mix it up a bit.

Original "Lili Marlen" was recorded in 1939 by Lale Andersen.
In 1961, she participated as West German representative in Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Einmal sehen wir uns wieder", which only reached 13th place with three points. Fifty-six years old at the time, for over 45 years, she held the record of the eldest participant at Eurovision – surpassed only in 2008 by the 75-year-old Croatian entertainer 75 Cents.

Yeah thats right. The book does mention this version by sating that initially it didnt make much of an impact until 1941 when the German forces radio started broadcasting to the Afrika Korps.

I'm really enjoying these. This Land Is Your Land is one of the all time greatest songs in my opinion, the impact it had on America was immense.
