No prizes for guessing my # 1 on this week, of course it was "Rock Bottom" "A Song For Europe" 77 gave two other hits for "Grazios Dainos" (from Rags and Lyn Paul). Which British Eurovision entry is your favourite ?

The Eagles remain at number one, with Berni Flint now at #2.
The highest new entry is Andrew Gold's tale of a lonely boy, who felt lonely when his parents had a second younger child. The dates match his own life, but he claimed it is not about himself. At the time, whilst I quite liked the song, I didn't quite get why the boy felt lonely. It's one of those emotional things you won't always understand, but it's a brilliant song. A lot better than the song that enters at #21 - technically anyway - but the latter is more of an iconic track in the revolution of popular music.
Between those, we have Pearl's A Singer, a woman who plays in a night club but wanted more stardom she never achieved. That was nearly the case with Elkie Brooks herself, she had been recording for years and a member of Vinegar Joe with Robert Palmer, but had no commercial success until this song.
"So you want to be a rock n roll star?" That song enters at #26, it was on Top of the Pops, and I didn't even know who the artist was at the time. Technically the charted version is live, from an E.P.
Below those we have Deniece Williams with her UK #1 and as Elvis Presley's hit starts falling T. Rex enter the chart this week. Of course we know the future that will connect these two artists very soon.

You may note I am getting through these faster than I used to. That is due to the lack of the other retro charts or current chart I used to do, and my plan is now 2 playlists a week covering 3 weeks each so I skip one day of posting in a week.
Stevie Wonder climbs to #2, where he has peaked twice before. 10cc have reached number one with their last 2 hits plus two previous ones, although I'm Mandy Fly Me didn't reach number one until its 8th chart week having sat for 7 weeks behind John Miles.
In a quiet week for new songs, the other significant entry is Television. "Marquee Moon" good rock song, possibly better known than you'd expect for a #30 peak, but what it isn't is punk, so I have no idea why it is sometimes labelled as such. I'd say it's more "prog rock" although it sounds very heavily early 70s Rolling Stones influenced to me.

Stevie Wonder gets to number one, 14 years after his debut with "Fingertips". During this time he reached number 2 twice, one of those "Superstition" being #2 behind John Lennon's Christmas song then later went back to be #2 behind Carly Simon's "You're So Vain". His other number 2 "Signed Sealed Delivered (I'm Yours)" was kept off the top by the Kinks' "Lola".
He may well have got to #1 earlier in the year had his own version of "Isn't She Lovely" been released instead of the David Parton cover.
Rod Stewart was recording also in the 1960s with Jeff Beck Group and the number one on which he appeared for Python Lee Jackson was also recorded in the 1960s but only released later. The other high entrants all first charted in the 1960s, Kenny Rogers as part of First Edition with "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" in 1968. Marvin Gaye first charted in 1963 with "Hitch Hike" and has had two numbers ones and a number two (including duets) to date. For Joe Tex this is a UK debut but his first NM hit "Hold What You've Got" reached #25 in 1965 and his biggest peak #4 with "S.Y.S.L.J.F.M (The Letter Song)" the following year.
Note that Andrew Gold is at #3 and he would get to #1 a decade later in a duo with one of the members of the band at #4 this week.

You Got Me Dancing - Andrea True Connection (#30) -- ( 39 ) Have I The Right - Dead End Kids (#28)
So after last week, another week on top for Stevie Wonder but the chart is otherwise shifting around, with Rod Stewart and Kenny Rogers making progress, whilst another band who started having hits in the 1960s, albeit with a different sound, get both the top 2 entries as Dreams enters the US top 40 and Don't Stop the UK top 50. "Dreams" was written by Stevie Nicks and "Don't Stop" by Christine McVie, who has been in the band for a while now. "You Can Go Your Own Way" reached #1 earlier in the year, and so the singles from "Rumours" are doing well.
All rise for Blue though. We had Mr Big in the chart earlier in the year and will have Space later on.
Also from the 60s, Piero Umiliani's "Mah Na Mah Na" which was released previously in 1968 but was not a hit (US #55), but has gained popularity now after appearing on "The Muppet Show" and another song from that show is on the new playlist.

In this chart in the UK, Abba fell from #1 to #7 as Stevie Wonder reached its peak of #2 behind Deniece Williams, who used to be one of his backing singers, and Rod Stewart climbed from #13 to #4 on its way up to #1 (Billy Ocean was #3 and Tavares #5).
This chart gains yet another UK #1 by the Jacksons, but it's charted as it's now in the US top 40, albeit it wasn't a particularly big hit there. It enters one place above Heatwave, whose member Rod Temperton wrote this song and a few of Michael Jackson's songs too.
Gonna Fly Now is the theme to the first Rocky, it's a very familiar tune, even if it didn't get into the UK chart, but did reach #1 in the USA as did the entry by Alan O'Day but they had a new number one nearly every week. (There were also 6 number ones in the UK that spent only one week on top in 1977).
We have the chart debut by The Jam this week. And a very silly song by Joy Sarney.

"Naughty Naughty Naughty" is iconic track. Sadly the diversity of music genres in UK charts was killed by streaming.

"Naughty Naughty Naughty" is iconic track. Sadly the diversity of music genres in UK charts was killed by streaming. And it's one of about 8 tracks from this playlist that isn't on Spotify. Apparently Joy Sarney is now 77 years old so she was 33 when that was a hit.

As Stevie Wonder keeps Rod Stewart, Kenny Rogers and the two Fleetwood Mac songs at bay, we have a disco classic by the Trammps enter. "Hold Back The Night" was their biggest UK hit in 1975, and indeed that also reached #4 on this chart. Tina Turner later covered Disco Inferno. Meanwhile John Miles breaks into the US top 40 with "Slow Down", a kind of bluesy-dance track, totally different to "Music" but shows his versatility. This is however his last hit.
Bryan Ferry's "Tokyo Joe" is the follow up to "This Is Tomorrow", both self-written songs having previously done covers as a solo artist. Roxy Music will be back with their new softer sound in 1979 (other than a re-issue of Virginia Plain which will not reach this chart).

It's a great top 3, but 'Dreams' would be higher than #3 in my best songs of all-time countdown.

I was expecting Dreams to get to #1, it's a very strong top 3. It might sneak a week on top next week. There's a huge one entering next week but it might not enter at #1.

1977 is often quoted as a great year for music, but in my opinion for the wrong reasons. The big album of the year was clearly "Rumours" and "Songs From The Key Of Life" which was released near the end of 1976 but was big in 1977, and that represents the top 2 this year, and in addition we had a lot of other great bands especially Electric Light Orchestra.
We have, however, also seen The Stranglers and now The Ramones enter the charts for the first time. Last year "Blitzkrieg Bop" totally flopped in both the UK and US and therefore didn't get into my chart, but "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" is their first hit, and they represent a different style of punk rock (if they are punk rock themselves) to The Sex Pistols, who made their debut at the end of 1976 and will chart again in a few weeks.
Yet another "silly" song though, this time a calypso by Trinidad Oil Company, for which even if you've never heard it before, you could probably sing along, without even needing a lyric sheet. The lyrics go "January, February, March, April, May, June, July" twice, then "August, September, October, November, December" a couple of times, then round again. Boney M will also record a version, it's apparently a traditional song by which children learn the months of the year.
The first time we see the name Teddy Pendergrass in the chart but of course he was singer with Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes and "Don't Leave Me This Way" reached #2 earlier in the year.

-- ( -- ) Join The Party - Honky -- ( -- ) L'Oiseau Et L'Enfant - Marie Myriam -- ( -- ) Looks Like We Made It - Barry Manilow -- ( -- ) My Heart Belongs To Me - Barbra Streisand
And so, totally sublime, Electric Light Orchestra climb to number one.
And not totally ridiculous but slightly, the highest entry at number 7 by Carole Bayer-Sager who is normally known only as a songwriter or co-writer, and who co-wrote this song with Bette Midler who also recorded a version and with Bruce Roberts. It contains an uncredited male vocalist saying a few spoken words (as well as someone singing "I'm So Sorry" a few times). Apart from that, it's contains some deviant things he's been up to and a list of stuff he has to pack when he goes. I remember thinking at the time that 61 cassettes was rather a lot, until I had a lot more than that number.
Baby Don't Change Your Mind was written by Van McCoy and also recorded by The Stylistics, whose chart career is now over. This was Gladys Knight's joint biggest UK hit. In my chart her career goes back as far as 1962, but only one hit that year then a 5 year gap. Since 1967 she's been consistent but her two biggest hits were both in the 1970s, a couple of #6 placings for "Midnight Train To Georgia" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me"
The Eagles follow up their huge number one Hotel California with "Life In The Fast Lane" whilst the Bee Gees' younger brother gets his debut helped by his big brother Barry who wrote this song.
And another family connection down at #38, as Kermit The Frog introduces his little nephew Robin... Ok, it was cute. And it beat the Eurovision winner which fails to chart, along with Barbra Streisand who got to #3 earlier in the year with Evergreen and Barry Manilow looks like he didn't make it this time.

This is the week before the Queen's Silver Jubilee. Her Platinum Jubilee will be next year (around Shavuot time, but in 1977 Shavuot was earlier).
And you can see that the Sex Pistols enter at #14 this week, in the UK chart they entered at #11 on this week, and climbed the following week to #2 although many think it was a chart fix and they were denied a rightful number 1.
Queen, the band, not the one who is having a jubilee, get the highest entry this week with the lead track from "Queen's First EP" and a track on the album "A Day At The Races". Since their first hit "Seven Seas Of Rhye" peaked at #4, all their hits have peaked at either #1 or #12. As they enter at #8 this week they can't peak at number 12 this time.
Since Queen had their first hit in March 1974, there have been 6 NM hits with the word "Queen" in the title (up to this week in 1977), including one of their own and the Sex Pistols. Can you name the other 4? (They all reached the NM top 10).

Queen move up to number 3 but nobody answered by question from yesterday, and I will leave it until I post my next chart which may well be Sunday.
Meanwhile, the highest new entry is by Alessi who are also sometimes called Alessi Brothers as they are 2 brothers with the surname of Alessi. They actually hold an NM chart record... I will see if anyone can guess what this record is. It is not dependent on how this song performs in the chart.
The other entries include what is I think the last of Jesse Green's 3 hits, this one is a bit reminiscent of Johnny Bristol's "Hang On In There Baby" in my opinion. Dr Feelgood make their singles chart debut but already had a UK number one album last year.

Queen land at number one although this song only got to #17 in the UK singles chart, so was no competition for Hot Chocolate whose entry was their only UK #1, but we know that "Bohemian Rhapsody" kept "You Sexy Thing" off number one and did so in my chart too. So will Hot Chocolate end up at #2 stuck behind Queen again?
So You Win Again was written by Russ Ballard, who also wrote classic songs "God Gave Rock N Roll To You", that one as a member of Argent but it was later covered by Kiss and "Since You've Been Gone" which was covered by Rainbow.
My next quiz question, and maybe I'll post all 3 of these questions in the Quiz forum as I may get answers there, is as follows:
What is the connection between Boney M and Rory & The Island?

Queen remain at number one, Alessi Brothers are in the way of Hot Chocolate being #2 behind them again and having had a #29, a #30 and a few that failed to chart, The Commodores crash in at #6 with what in my opinion is their best song (and not Three Times A Lady).
Boney M enter with Ma Baker, their 3rd hit, but this is my favourite style of Boney M song, this one and Rasputin, the male harsh vocal (which isn't the man you see on TV) with the female singing the other half, whilst telling a story. (Incidentlally the Rory & The Island song came up in my random playlist!)
In the US, Rita Coolidge got to #2 with a cover of Jackie Wilson's "Higher And Higher" but in the UK she covered Boz Scaggs and a song I remembered hearing with a male vocal a few months earlier then charted with a female vocal. I may have heard the Boz Scaggs version but there were other covers with male vocals prior to it being a hit for Rita Coolidge.
A few acts with hits lower down not doing as well as they have before, in particular 10cc stumbling in at #39. I'm sort-of surprised that "Give A Little Bit" is Supertramp's most streamed song, I'd have expected it to be "Dreamer", "Logical Song" or "Breakfast In America".
A debut for Tom Petty.
Garnet Mimms, in the UK charts, only had a minor hit with the song that failed to chart, and it's a disco song and isn't on Spotify. As with Joe Tex, he was having soul hits in the USA in the 1960s and reached my chart with quite a few of those, "Baby Don't You Weep" peaking highest at #11 in 1964.

Queen remain at number one. The Emotions had a minor hit in the 1960s but they are best remembered for this song and for a collaboration with Earth Wind & Fire.
Rockpile are a 4-piece band with Dave Edmunds, Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner (musician, not footballer) and Terry Williams, and they have recorded together for a few years but most of their material is released as a solo name to fulfil different record company contracts and of course Dave Edmunds is the famous name of the group having had a UK #1 single in 1970. He sings lead vocal on "I Knew The Bride", Nick Lowe wrote the song. This version is produced by Dave Edmunds with a Chuck Berry feel, perhaps apt as the verses sound a bit like the melody of Chuck Berry's "You Never Can Tell".
In 1985 Nick Lowe would record his own version (live) as a collaboration with Huey Lewis & The News, although they weren't credited.
And Meri Wilson - the fun of 1977 continues with her. Not to be confused with Mari Wilson (as of 1977, who is she?) an American singer who is 28 at present and made similar songs with double-entendres but this was her only hit. She sadly died in a car accident in 2002 at the age of 53.

So great at the top, the Emotions could also only move up 2 places like the Commodores did last week after entering at #6, and Boney M couldn't make any progress and goes down 1 place as The Emotions move above them.
In this week in the UK chart Donna Summer entered at #15, Brotherhood Of Man at #25 and the Sex Pistols far lower though they leapt all the way up to #7 the following week. And they were on Top of the Pops - I think the BBC really wanted to have them on as they were big in the news and with this song friendly enough it did the trick.
Some may feel this is the big conflict of the year as both the Donna Summer and Sex Pistols songs are sort-of classics and reflect what they think this year was really about, although maybe not this particular Sex Pistols song, but at the time I clearly liked it more than "I Feel Love".
Also entering this week is Richard Anthony Hewson, no relation to Bono (whose real name is Paul Hewson) but has used the name RAH Band for his instrumental, with RAH being his initials.
