10th November 1973 Retro Revamp Charts
It's 3 weeks on top for the epic immovable Cockney Rebel, this time forcing the fabulous late Jim Croce to 2, while the marvellous Mind Games drops to 3 for John Lennon even as two tracks from the album of the same name debut at 61 and 77. Ringo's also got an album out and the next single off it, has an early start, with his cover of the 50's biggie You're Sixteen debuting at 41. It's looked on as a bit dodgy these days given he was early 30's at the time, but in those less cynical times we just saw it as a big star covering an old favourite song, full stop.
Highest new entry is the fabulous Aretha, with a gifted Stevie Wonder song, as the sublime Until You Come Back To me enters at 4 - replacing Stevie's Living For The City, oops! New at 8, Mott The Hoople grab a 5th chart entry and 3rd top 10, with their hugely catchy Roll Away The Stone at 8. I should credit Thunderthighs for the "Sha La la La push push's" and back-up assist too, they were fun on Top Of The Pops. Terry Jacks massive 1974 global smash Seasons In The Sun is charting in Canada, so that gets an early start here too (those are my chart rules! First release date, not first UK release date) at 26, after a 3-year gap since The Poppy Family last troubled my retro countdowns.
The New Seekers are back with a 5th chart entry of 1973, and over 3 years of non-stop hits here, with the Lyn Paul credited You Won't Find Another Fool joining the ragtime/singsong trends of styles of yesteryear charting at 60. Robert Knight already went top 20 with his Northern Soul biggie, Love On A Mountain Top, in my 1968 retro charts, but it's very much a nostalgic part of Xmas 1973 for me, so it's back. If ever a record needed a serious sound quality remix it's this one, there's no decent version I've ever found sound-wise, which is a shame. It sounds best on single vinyl on a record player, and CD/download/streaming versions not so much.
T.Rex are back with a shock - only in at 72 with a new single! Truck On (Tyke) was the one that killed T.Rex's hit-making days, really, it just wasn't up to par, though I still like it - there were better album tracks and B sides Marc could have gone with - or maybe just wait for the next album - Zinc Alloy had a good next single and a potential single that never was. Here's an oddity - I never knew anyone covered Abba's Ring Ring! They did though. It's not bad, and I'm not sure who The Vernons are - I wondered if they were linked to The Vernon Girls, a hot of British 60's girl singers sang with them over the years, but there's nothing on t'internet to suggest it was.
There's a bunch of soul singers returning to the chart with UK flops, some I know (Gladys Knight's charted for me in 1974), some are new to me (Sly Stone, Holland-Dozier, O'Jays, Jackie Wilson) and there's also Elvis with Raised On Rock, one I didn't like much at the time, but it's actually not too bad and means Elvis keeps his record with a new entry each retro year since 1967.

10th November 1973 My actual chart of that week way back then
It's a Dynamite chart-topper as Mud grab a 2nd number one in a row, and a third top 2, while Barry Blue's Glitter stomp is up to 3 as the Glitter bloke is back for a 6th top 5 in a row with his monster ballad, and a change of pace, I Love You Love Me Love new at 5. Suzi Q gets 3 top 10's in a row, Macca joins mucka Ringo in the top 10 for his 5th post-Beatles top 10, and it's a chart debut for String Driven Thing's radio-play track It's A Game, which I was a fan of, despite it flopping. It took the Bay City Rollers to turn it into a hit in 1977.
David Essex follows up with some quirky Lamplight at 21, Kiki Dee joins Elton's Rocket label and gets a first hit record with Amoureuse, a few years after signing with Motown (and not getting a hit), and in at 27. That leaves Mungo Jerry extending the run of top 30 hit singles to 3 years, as Wild Love becomes their 7th.
Starting this week on BBC1 classic sitcom Last Of The Summer Wine, a story about 3 retired old codgers having larks in the Yorkshire rural village that somehow managed to run for 37 years, and outlived 2of the 3 original stars due to a host of well-known British character actors. It's still quite fun on re-runs. Of course, The Simpsons is eyeing up that record these days...
Tommy Cooper was also back on telly, on ITV, just like that on the Tommy Cooper Hour, magic trick failures and all, a man who could get a laugh just looking at the audience and going "what?....what?...." From the States, Karl Malden and future movie star Michael Douglas starred in The Streets Of San Francisco, joining the invasion of US cop and PI shows of the 70's. Movie-wise, the fabulous Westworld, starring Yul Brynner as a robot cowboy, was out in the USA, and in the UK That'll Be The Day, a gritty 50's rock idol movie starring new hit singer David Essex, and 50's/60's hit singer Adam Faith, was doing well.
Disney-wise, animated Robin Hood, with a great cast of voices, was underwhelming as I took our neighbour-friend's daughter Joanne to see it in Gloucester, she was ooh, 7 or 8 I guess, and it gave me a great excuse to go and see the film without feeling so ridiculous aged 16 (by the time it came out in the UK, with the usual annoying delays for promo and anticipation build-up). Anything with Terry-Thomas and Peter Ustinov in is worthy to some extent though!
1 ( 2 ) DYNAMITE - Mud 2 ( 1 ) PHOTOGRAPH - Ringo Starr 3 ( 14 ) DO YOU WANNA DANCE - Barry Blue 4 ( 3 ) SHOWDOWN - Electric Light Orchestra 5 ( NEW ) I LOVE YOU LOVE ME LOVE - Gary Glitter 6 ( 4 ) SORROW - David Bowie 7 ( 10 ) LONELY DAYS LONELY NIGHTS - Don Downing 8 ( 22 ) HELEN WHEELS - Paul McCartney & Wings 9 ( 12 ) DAYTONA DEMON - Suzi Quatro 10 ( 5 ) A HARD RAIN'S A GONNA FALL - Bryan Ferry

It's up 18 places to grab a 3rd KLF number one of the year, and Tammy Wynette finally gets a chart-topper 16 years after Stand By Your Man she's standing by the JAMMs Justified And Ancient. 3rd November 1973
It's 2 weeks on top of my retro remake chart as I become obsessed with one that I discovered long after 1973, but haven't heard in 30 years, Steve Harley's magnificent Sebastian just holding off John Lennon's equally magnificent Mind Games, one of his best solo tracks. The inrush of classics continues at the top end with Jim Croce's heartbreaking posthumous single Time In A Bottle, it's so poignant in any case, but it had a massive revival in 2014's fabulous X-Men: Days Of Future Past movie with a key sequence starring Quicksilver in slow motion. If 15-year-old me could have been shown that clip I would have been hyperactive for weeks, and frustrated that it would take 40 years for the movie-technology to catch up with superhero comics.
Dolly Parton has new rock-pop stuff out in 2023, at the age of 77, all fab, but it's Jolene up to 5 in my retro charts of 1973, while Roxy Music make it 3 top 10's as Street Life debuts at 10, with a frantic, and unique, song construction that I still love. I bought the single and the B side is quirky too, Hula Kula, Hawaiian-style instrumental. New at 21, that Glitter man is back with his biggest record in the UK, million-seller I Love You Love Me Love, his 7th entry, as Prelude do an acapella cover of Neil Young's After The Goldrush on their new album, though the single won't hit until spring '74. New at 29, and so good it was a hit again in 1982.
Elton John has 3 tracks in the top 20, 4 in the 40, as another Piano Man is back at 53, Billy Joel's signature tune not getting any UK success until 1975 (and then only very minor). At 54, Lou Christie returns after 4 years away on a flop track I've never heard before, but Beyond The Blue Horizon is both old-fashioned for 1973, and enormously catchy in a fabulous cheesy way. Another 60's popster is also back at 63, as Peter Noone has another pop tune that's new to me, but is rather catchy too, I Think I'm Over keeping the ex-Herman's Hermits singer having a run of 7 consecutive retro chart years. Peter was Tweeting (X-ing?) only today about The Kinks and his version of Dandy.
That leaves the sadly late Olivia Newton-John back again with a country ditty that was big in the USA, and Edwin Starr having another funky stab at chart success (in vain).

3rd November 1973 Wot I Liked That Actual Week Then
It's 2 weeks on top for Ringo in my chart of the time, 15 years old and all, while ex-mucca Paul is new in with his missus and Denny Laine & co at 22 with the rocking Helen Wheels, named after the McCartney's actual car, and the single not on the imminent classic album dropping soon. Mud are up to 2 for a hat-trick of top 2's, and The Hollies grab a first top 10 since 1970 with the CCR-ish cowboy story song with the long title, at 7, one ahead of Bob Dylan getting his first top 10 in 4 years, and an actual cowboy song from the Pat McGarett & Billy The Kid film.
Don Downing gets a fab soul top 10, and Eddie Kendricks grabs a fab funk stomper, Keep On Truckin', outdoing his old bandmates at 24, The Temptations having dropped out. The Osmonds are back with their first-ever singles ballad, Let Me In being better than Donny's efforts. New at 25 while Dan The Banjo Man slips his eponymous instrumental in at 27 2 years on from his previous pseudonym Springwater. His real name is Phil Cordell. The Four Tops also return at 29, with Sweet Understanding Love, a UK hit where the way better Ain't No Woman wasn't, and Colin Blunstone gets a 6th solo entry, which is Wonderful for him.
Around this time, my obsessive-comics heroes The Legion Of Super-Heroes were having a revamp, as new artist Dave Cockrum proved hugely popular with me and other fans as he updated costumes and showcased his amazing art on the cover of what was the Superboy comic, as the 30th century-super-hero-team outdid Superboy in popularity. See comments above about X-Men, as life proves circular with Dave Cockrum falling out with DC Comics in 1974 over them not keep his own artwork, and leaving to Marvel and spear-heading X-Men into the top-selling comic using all of his Legion-styles and new heroes he'd created for the team, and took with him for the X-Men. I was about as excited about a new Legion comic as I was a fab new record.

17th November 1991
It's 2 weeks on top for 1968 chart-topper Those Were The Days, holding off Michael Jackson's new blockbuster Black Or White at 2 after a 48-place climb, while Bomb The Bass leap from 72 to 6 with The Air You Breathe and Genesis extend their top 10 hits to 13 years as No Son Of Mine hits 8. Kylie returns to top 10 status after the blip of Word Is Out, and highest new entry of the week - is not the classic KLF and eccentric Tammy Wynette collab Justified And Ancient which enters at 19: no it's Sonia covering the The Real Thing disco classic You To Me Are Everything at 7! I do love the twice-top-10 song, so I assume this was a pretty faithful cover, given I've not heard it in 30 years, I don't recall!
Seal also is into covers, his own Killer as it turns out, peeved he didn't a credit I expect on the much-better Adamski original, new at 14, Kate Bush covers Elton John at 45, George Michael covers Elton John at 72 (with Elton John, who had already gone top 5 with his re-issue of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me in 1991 for me), Beats International cover Elvis Presley, and there are aslo some new actual songs: Belinda Carlisle new at 23, Do You Feel Like I Feel, the huge Stars for Simply Red at 61, Crowded House's great Fall At Your Feet at 75, Roxette Spending My Time, Happy Mondays Judge Fudge, Rozalla's Faith and OMD's Call My Name rounding off the less-well-remembered tracks.

27th October 1973
It's another chart invasion of big discs as the continuing manic top end of the chart is suddenly dominated by Cockney Rebel, no Stave Harley-billing on their strange, but wonderful Sebastian. Almost 8 minutes of radio-unfriendly, orchestral, auto-tuned vocal (obviously 26 years before that became a thing), semi-Progrock, Glam referencing, Gay anthem. Never a hit, criminally, and just beating out the criminally under-rated Mind Games new track from John Lennon, still fab 50 years later. That means a Fab Four top 20 as John, Ringo (plus George), and Paul are solo as they 50-years-later collectively anticipate a UK number one and my new personal chart number one. I really wouldn't have believed it even if you'd played me the song. It's almost 2 years since Happy Xmas and Imagine were in my Retro charts.
New in at 7 Stevie Wonder's back for a 5th chart belter of 1973, a little early for the UK, but Living For The City is charting in the US and it's one of Stevie's finest moments, social deprivation ever relevant. Dolly Parton is back with her signature tune, the wondrous Jolene at 18 and 3 years early for the UK charts, who were so often late (see Midnight Train To Georgia just dropped out, and War's Me And Baby Brother entering lower down, all 1976 UK hits, and Sister Sledge debuting with the very Jackson 5-sounding Mama Never Told Me, 2 years ahead of charting in the UK - but flopping in the US!).
David Essex gets his 2nd biggie as Lamplight enters at 50, Jim Stafford's playful Spiders & Snakes is new at 71 6 months early for the UK, Fleetwood Mac get a classy Hypnotised into the chart 5 years on from Albatross, the Bob Welch song probably being their best since Peter Green departed. Charles Aznavour dances in his charmingly French Old Fashioned Way, Donny Osmond keeps the covers churned out as diminishing returns will start cropping up now on a fairly pedestrian cover of the great Nat 'King' Cole's When I fall In Love - so good that would be a bigger hit than Donny's cover 22 years after Nat had died.
Tony Orlando & Dawn are back with another jolly ragtime romp - really not sure why they thought that was a career-making move, as Who's In The Strawberry Patch With Sally flopped in the UK, but gave them 3 years of non-stop retro entries for me. Gilbert meanwhile gets even more dreary with latest ballad Why Oh Why Oh Why which I really didn't like much at the time, ditto Donny. That leaves Mungo Jerry also on the 3-year-run ride, as Wild Love sneaks in on bottom rung.

27th Oct 1973 my chart of the time Gloucester
It's a first week on top for Ringo Starr, Photograph taking him higher than he's ever been post-Beatles, thanks in good part to George Harrison, on the record and co-writer. That makes Ringo the third Beatle to get a chart-topper in my original weekly charts, and George too, albeit uncredited. George would have to wait till 1981 for his own solo topper, then My Sweet Lord in 2002. David Bowie grabs his 3rd top 10 of '73, and Stevie Wonder his 3rd too. Mud get a Sweet cast-off with Dyna-mite in at 11, full-on Glam Rock and a 3rd hit, Barry Blue is on his 3rd too as he outdoes Gary Glitter on Do You Wanna Dance at 16. Ditto Suzi's on 3 too, with Daytona Demon a Glam spot behind.
Don Downing is new at 18 with the still-wonderful Lonely Days Lonely Nights, a soul gem bordering on disco, Hudson-Ford follow-up with Take It Back, their 3rd chart song of the year including Strawbs. It's a debut for Alvin Stardust, former 60's pop star Bernard Jewry, former resident of Mansfield Woodhouse (a few miles from where I was born), aka Shane Fenton. Alvin was in heavy disguise on Peter Shelley's My Coo Ca Choo creation on Lift Off With Ayshea, I seem to recall a coat of feathers prior to his Top Of The Pops revamp as Gene Vincent lookalike. That leaves Limmie & The Family Cooking simmering with Dreamboat, at 29, not quite doing The Magic this time.

10th November 1991
It was the end of the US holiday, and back to the UK and the new record scene both this week so a hectic chart led by a new entry at 1 for Mary Hopkin's Those Were The Days, the record that I was obsessed with in late 1968 when I started doing personal charts, so it's back on top 23 years on thanks to a new CD single EP from Apple Records, that had this track, Badfinger's Come And Get It (as written by Paul McCartney) new at 25, and Billy Preston's 1969 single at 33.
Chesney Hawkes belatedly makes the top 10, as it was sounding good on Florida radio, and new in at 9 another US track from Natural Selection, Do Anything. Genesis climb into the 20 with No Son Of Mine, Kylie does a soul duet with Keith Washington and a move away from the SAW dance groove, If You Were With Me Now pretty good at 27. Stevie Nicks 80's goodie, I Can't Wait, is back again, Michael Jackson's big new video and album debut enters modestly, Black Or White, for the moment.

20th October 1973
It's a manic chart week yet again as any of the top 5 could have been number one, but it was Barry Blue's 3rd single that won out, debuting Do You Wanna Dance at 1. It's a complete Gary Glitter rip-off, but you can play this one on the radio and it sounds fab. I preferred it to any of Glitter's 1973 hits at the time, and turns out I still do. That's bad news for Alvin's Coo Ca Choo up to 2, and still sounding Glamtastic, while Redbone make it 2 top 10's as Come And Get Your Love climbs to 3 despite being everywhere for the last 8 years or so.
The Ray Charles track shoots up to 12, so classy, so obscure, sounds like it could have come from 1962. Barry White is on his 2nd top 20 as Never Never climbs to 13, Genesis climb their wardrobe to 15, and Elton makes it 3 top 20's simultaneously as Harmony hits 20. Kiki Dee gets signed to Elton's Rocket label and covers Amoureuse beautifully, new at 34 and her 3rd retro chart track. Macca's back, as Wings' Helen Wheels drives in 37, sounding like it could have come right off Paul's most-classic post-Beatles forthcoming album Band On The Run - if only it had been on it!
Kevin Johnson was a UK one-hit wonder (if top 30 is a hit) thanks to Jonathan King picking it up for his UK label in early 1975 after flopping in 1973, but his touching story of Rock'n'Roll (I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life), and the struggling wannabe who never made it, still resonates. Glen Campbell is back yet again with another good track that flopped and I never got to hear. Bizarre how suddenly out-of-fashion he was after 1971 until his 1975 comeback hit. Wherefore And Why is pretty good at 55.
The Wombles kiddie TV show is on the air, and The Wombling Song is out, Mike Batt on creative duties musically and soon to bring us many a pop-gem genre-varied series of kiddie hits. Yes really, calypso, classical, progrock, 40's big band, and xmas will all be explored over the next 18 months. Bernard Cribbins narrated the kid show, soon to be seen in his final role in Doctor Who, tail-ending 60 iconic years from Right Said Fred to sci-fi fandom. Also on TV in 1973, New Faces, a talent show which pushed out lots of soon-to-be-famous acts, and the theme tune was sung by Carl Wayne, not seen since he left The Move in 1969 - sadly You're A Star didn't bring him back to the chart success enjoyed by Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne (his replacement in The Move).
Bob Marley's back again, as The Wailers chart I Shot The Sheriff off the new album, 12 months ahead of Eric Clapton's hit version, at 80. Just behind Helen Reddy makes it 4 with Ruby Red Dress, The Chi-Lites keep their run going with I Found Sunshine off the new album before single 1 has left the stage. Oddly the biggest tracks in the UK were not US singles, and they will follow in 1974, but I Found Sunshine did come out in the summer of '74 - I remember Elton John liking it as guest new singles reviewer the same week My Girl Bill came out. I'll save his comments for that one, but it's funny and makes sense of all that came later!
The Persuaders are also back with Some Guys Have All The Luck - one I totally missed at the time, but came to be the inspiration for 3 80's hit covers, all of which I liked, and all of which are different from the original and each other. I prefer Robert Palmer's, Rod Stewart's and especially Maxi Priest's tbh. Hudson-Ford get a second single Take It back, just ahead of Marmalade sneaking in with a change of direction to rock - didn't really work for them though, but I think I saw them on Lift Off With Ayshea or some other TV spot at the time.

20th October 1973 My chart that week then
It's 2 weeks on top for Ike & Tina Turner 50 years ago this week, in a chart full of faves, not least Ringo Starr new at 6 with his best record, a George harrison co-write with Phil Spector-styled wall-of-sound production. I saw Ringo do it on his last UK tour - the venue wasn't full which probably explains why he hasn't been back and sticks to the USA. Poor Ringo, an icon with an all-star band doing their stuff too!
Nazareth get a 2nd top 10 hit in a row and Bowie is back yet again, with his version of The Merseys' Sorrow, taken from his Pin-Ups covers album. Talk about prolific! These days the production sounds a bit basic and rushed compared to, say, Life On Mars - or even The laughing Gnome! The Carpenters' old track Top Of The World pops in at 26, and The Strawbs' make it 3 in a row at 30.
1 ( 1 ) NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS - Ike & Tina Turner 2 ( 3 ) JOYBRINGER - Manfred Mann’s Earthband 3 ( 2 ) SHOWDOWN - Electric Light Orchestra 4 ( 4 ) A HARD RAIN'S A GONNA FALL - Bryan Ferry 5 ( 6 ) GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - Elton John 6 ( NEW ) PHOTOGRAPH - Ringo Starr 7 ( 9 ) GHETTO CHILD - The Detroit Spinners 8 ( 8 ) BALLROOM BLITZ - The Sweet 9 ( 7 ) MY FRIEND STAN - Slade 10 ( 17 ) THIS FLIGHT TONIGHT - Nazareth
11 ( NEW ) SORROW - David Bowie 12 ( 19 ) KNOCKIN’ ON HEAVEN’S DOOR - Bob Dylan 13 ( 16 ) HIGHER GROUND - Stevie Wonder 14 ( 14 ) THE DAY THAT CURLY BILLY SHOT DOWN CRAZY SAM MCGEE - The Hollies 15 ( 13 ) ANGEL FINGERS - Wizzard 16 ( 12 ) ALL THE WAY FROM MEMPHIS - Mott The Hoople 17 ( 11 ) THAT LADY - The Isley Brothers 18 ( 15 ) CAROLINE - Status Quo 19 ( 22 ) TIE A YELLOW RIBBON ROUND THE OLE OAK TREE - Dawn 20 ( 10 ) LOVES ME LIKE A ROCK - Paul Simon

13th October 1973
It's up to pole position for a 5th chart-topper for Elton John as Bennie & The Jets knocks his own Yellow Brick Road off the top spot. It originally topped my rule-changed charts in 1974 despite not being a UK single until 1976. Al Wilson jumps up to 5 with Show And Tell as highest new entry is at 7 for Mud, their 3rd top 10 in a row after 2 retro number ones. Dyna-Mite was a song rejected by The Sweet (who can't complain as they got Ballroom Blitz as a result) which gave Mud the opportunity to drop the Tango rhythms and go full-on Glam Rock and become one of my fave acts of 1974.
It's a big week for great new tracks, so the chart is expanded to 85 and a lot of records drop where they should be going up. New in at 12, a minor hit for me in 1974 for Redbone, but a huge chart-topper following Guardians Of The Galaxy's prime movie slot, these days it's unavoidable on adverts and so on, back in 1974 when it was a huge US hit it was unknown. Come And Get Your Love is the new name of the already charted Hail, newly revamped to the better and a 5th chart retro entry for the First Nation band.
Debuting at 14, and disguised on Lift Off With Ayshea, ITV's kids hour pop show, Alvin Stardust was clearly a p*ss-take of Gary Glitter's name and a Glamrocking anthem called My Coo Ch Choo (brainchild of future hitmaker Peter Shelley) was performed under a pseudo feather coat of many colours. sadly the footage is wiped but Alvin soon changed over to leathers a la Gene Vincent, opted for a back-handed microphone style with gloves, and outed himself as former 60's hitmaker Shane Fenton, and a local popstar to people living in Mansfield (where I was born and lived in between RAF camps and so on). A new career is born!
At 27, Genesis debut their Peter Gabriel-dominated quirky progrock I Know What I Like 6 months early, as Prog bands didn't usually bother with singles, and they'd dropped new album Selling England By The Pound. Barry White's new US single is out, one of his greats, Never Never Gonna Give Ya Up in at 31 and helping to push his current US single down my chart. Elton has a massive climb into the 40 with Harmony, and Leo Sayer gets a second track on the chart as his clown-faced fairground/circus-inspired UK chart debut The Show Must Go On is new at 53.
Lynsey De Paul gets a 5th chart track with the wistful ballad Won't Somebody Dance With Me, with Ed "Stewpot" Stewart guesting at the end of the song inviting her to dance. I was still listening to Junior's Choice in those days, so that was a nice touch. The Staple Singers are back 2 years of charting, with If You're Ready at 67, not entirely dissimilar to I'll Take You There, while Suzi Q is on track 4 in the chart, the rawer Daytona Demon, still Glamrock but slower. Ray Charles is on a new record label and drops a very classic-era strings ballad-sounding forgotten gem that's new to me - Come LIve With Me is really good.
Gallagher & Lyle debut at 8- with one that got airplay (but no sales) at the time, Shine A Light, the Scottish folk duo better known as part of McGuiness Flint up to that point, and the hit songwriters of the band - and future pop hits for themselves and others. Blackfoot Sue get a 3rd chart entry, Get It All To Me, and in bottom rung it's Babs Streisand with the theme to her new blockbuster movie The Way We Were. I love engaging comic Babs, What's Up Doc and others, not so keen on glum Babs m'self and not one of her greatest songs, but huge in the USA. Gladys Knight would do it better soon-ish.

13th October 1973 My actual chart of that week way back then
It's a first chart-topper for Ike & Tina Turner, on the amazing autobiographical Nutbush City Limits, complete with fab synth break as add on to the aggressive rockfunk base. Joybringer, talking of synths, is up to 3 and The Detroit Spinners get 2 top 10's in a row. Nazareth get a 3rd of the year with Joni Mitchell's This Flight Tonight new at 17. Linda Lewis follows up her Rock A Doodle Doo with Play Around, which should have been a hit.
Lynsey De Paul makes it 4 in a row with an abrupt change in direction, the lush ballad Won;t Somebody Dance With Me, with bonus dance invitation from DJ Ed "Stewpot" Stewart, Junior's Choice presenter. David Cassidy has been a big fave over the last 3 years both with and without The Partridge Family, but his hyped new double A side struggles in at 29 despite zooming to the top of the UK charts. Oops!
1 ( 4 ) NUTBUSH CITY LIMITS - Ike & Tina Turner 2 ( 1 ) SHOWDOWN - Electric Light Orchestra 3 ( 8 ) JOYBRINGER - Manfred Mann’s Earthband 4 ( 6 ) A HARD RAIN'S A GONNA FALL - Bryan Ferry 5 ( 2 ) SKYWRITER - The Jackson 5 6 ( 3 ) GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD - Elton John 7 ( 5 ) MY FRIEND STAN - Slade 8 ( 10 ) BALLROOM BLITZ - The Sweet 9 ( 11 ) GHETTO CHILD - The Detroit Spinners 10 ( 7 ) LOVES ME LIKE A ROCK - Paul Simon

6th October 1973
It's Elton John on top with his 4th number one as the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road drops and invades an expanded chart to accommodate it, the title track at 1, and future US chart-topper (and B side in the UK, outrageously, until 1976) Bennie & The Jets new in at 4. There's also Harmony new at 72, a US single in 1980, and the starter epic Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding at 75. Missing is Grey Seal which has already charted in the 1970 charts as a B side, earlier version.
Charlie Rich's country classic is up to 6, Harold Melvin/Teddy Pendergrass are up to 10 for a first top 10, and future US number one, Show And Tell, brings Al Wilson in at 25 - still pretty obscure to the UK though, which is a shame. New at 36, Bowie is about to do a Bryan Ferry eg a covers album (see These Foolish Things new at 76), and his version of the Merseys' Sorrow is in at 36 - pretty good, but largely forgotten these days. In at 64, a radio hit I was a fan of at the time, String Driven Thing's It's A Game - it made the Breakers but never quite broke into the 50, so it was left to the Bay City Rollers to get the hit in 1977.
Future UK and US number one, The Joker, sneaks in for The Steve Miller Band - I charted it in early 1974, but the UK waited until an advert pushed it in 1990 to the top spot, at 66, and at 67 another one I charted in 1974 as The Three Degrees go full-on Philly on Dirty Ol' Man without convincing the UK record-buying public. Linda Lewis gets a 2nd chart entry with Play Around, another one I liked, still quite sweet, but not a hit. The Stylistics chart early with Rockin' Roll Baby as they move away from lush soul ballads, new at 74. At 77, one I have listed in my charts of the time, but one I'd forgotten, Jam Jam sort of discorock from the American Jam Band, whil Phil Cordell is back as Dan The Banjo Man, his previous alias being the fab Springwater. This one almost charted too. Al Stewart debuts, Terminal Eyes is a new one on me, but Dreamboat isn't as Limmie & co were on Top Of The Pops, at 80 and 79.

6th October 1973 Wot I Liked That Actual Week Then
It's 2 weeks on top for ELO 50 years ago, with The Jackson 5's Skywriter challenging for the top spot as Slade make it 7 top 5's out of 8. Manfred Mann, the man, gets his first top 10 since Ragamuffin Man in 1969, courtesy of his Earthband at 8, with some assist from Holst. Dylan the man is back for the first time since 1969, and he's Knockin' On Heaven's Door with the fab Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid movie tune, Bob having done the soundtrack to the film. X-Rated due to the violence, so I've never seen it!
Stevie Wonder is back funky and political, Higher Ground at 22, Dawn and Geordie both re-enter, while a quick chart note for The Rolling Stones' Angie and UK chart-topper Eye Level, neither of which I was that bothered about at the time, but which are pretty decent-sounding 50 years later. The Stones' make it 5 years of charting along with Manfred Mann and Bob Dylan. 5 years was an eternity in chart terms back in those days, and it seemed so long ago as to be nostalgic to a 15-year-old. To a 65-year-old 5 years is pretty recent.

29th September 1973
It's Ringo Starr on top, as Photograph gives the Ex-Beatle his first chart-topper on the Retro chart, joining George, Paul, John who have already done the deed. His best record, no question, thanks from help from George. Highest new entry at 18 is the 3rd hit from Nazareth, with their version of This Flight Tonight in at 18 - Joni Mitchell's song, but this version is the best version, and Naz's best record. Cliff Richard has a new single out to promote his forthcoming and final, not-very-good, film of the same name. The record's pretty decent, and the film at least had Deborah Watling as co-star, a former Doctor Who companion fave of mine with Patrick Troughton and Frazier Hines in 1967/8.
Big news on Top Of The Pops was a huge promo for David Cassidy's new double-A Daydreamer and The Puppy Song, both decent tracks but not amongst his best moments, this marked the point where David's career declined in the USA and peaked in the UK. It was all downhill chartwise after this until George Michael revived his career in 1986. Blue Mink have a new album, Roger Cook already haven given away his song Another "Without You" Day to Miki Anthony, but his band do a nice version of it anyway, new at 61, with Roger and Madeline Bell on joint vocals. probably should have been a single.
In at 66, Phil Everly gets his first solo retro chart success for me, with The Air That I Breathe - a good version, but Polydor's secretary's suggestion to Allan Clarke that his band might get a hit with it was spot on. Brownsville Station debut with Smokin' In The Boys Room, and like The Hollies' cover still 5 months away from UK hitdom, and sounding not entirely unlike Alice Cooper. David Gates gets a 2nd solo entry at 73 and The Who at 75 drag 5:15 into my chart for the first ever time, as I don't recall hearing it much (if at all) at the time and I certainly never recorded it despite it making the UK charts.

My charts of the time 29th September 1973
It's a second number one for ELO 50 years ago, as Showdown holds off Nutbush City Limits from the top spot, loved them both dearly. New in at 3, Elton John debuts Goodbye Yellow Brick Road just ahead of the forthcoming double album and tracks played on Johnny Walkers albums chart rundown on lunchdown Radio 1. Brick Road is a sort of Wizard Of Oz tribute, lovely, and Elton's 5th top 5. Quo hit a new chart peak for any of their singles, Caroline at 4, and Paul Simon grabs a 4th solo top 10. Bryan Ferry covers Bob Dylan in his quirky Glam style, and gets a first solo hit outside Roxy Music with A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall at 7. Slade meanwhile debut a milder sound, My Friend Stan in at 8 for an 8th consecutive Top 10.
The Temptations cover Undisputed Truth's Law Of The Land in Papa Was A Rolling Stone stylee, new at 24, The Strawbs get a 3rd chart entry with Shine On Silver sun at 28, 11 places lower than ex-bandmates Hudson-Ford. The American Jam Band sneak in at 29 with Jam Jam, and Marvin Gaye says Let's Get It On at 30 and 50 years later his family would lose a copyright lawsuit to Ed Sheeran who could prove the chords predated Marvin's soul hit.

22nd September 1973
It's a new entry on top for ELO, as Showdown becomes their second retro chart-topper, this time minus Roy Wood, with a track that's not entirely unlike a Motown song, but it's fab anyway. That leaves Elton up to 3 with Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Ringo new in at 4 with his best ever single, a George Harrison co-write, on Photograph. The autumn of 1973 was chock a block with exciting new classics at the time, and with my new chart rules there's also some great stuff from 1974 climbing into the 20 and the Xmas 1974 synth goodie Pepperbox new at 10 for The Peppers, courtesy of this week's Dutch chart.
Talking of Dutch, Golden Earring debut with their rock monster hit, Radar Love, still solid gold 50 years on, while The Hollies are also back, Allan Clarke back on vocals on the very CCR The Day That Curly Billy etc in at 25 for a 7th consecutive retro year chart career. Slade are also new in at 30 with My Friend Stan, a change of pace for Noddy & the lads, and sadly I can't reverse the N's in the title as per the record label of the time.
Jim Croce died this week 50 years ago in an air crash, and there will be some very poignant posthumous new stuff from Jim on the way, including I Got A Name new in at 56, and worth noting Glynis Johns, the Mary Poppins movie legend (and way more, including her theatre starring role in A Little Night Music at 53, Send In The Clowns) was already 50 years old in 1973. She's 100 this week. Finally down the bottom end, a Bob Marley classic (flop at the time) debuts with Get Up Stand Up, and his former mate Johnny nash is in with My Merry Go Round, not quite up to former standards but nice enough.

So, 50 years ago I was starting school at Chosenhill Comprehensive, as Ballroom Blitz topped my charts. In Lincoln everyone had long hair so it was a culture shock when the 5th form kids started telling me I was going to be told to get my haircut in this ex-Grammar School. Sure enough, I was told to see a tonsorial artist by the Games teacher. No idea what he meant, had to ask. Bizarrely, another ex-schoolmate of mine from Singapore (RAF Seletar) was already there. He was my my form rival for running the 400m fastest in tropical Singapore, but he was faster, his name was Lance. In the interim I had very much given up athletics, and as many sports as I could get away with. sadly they did Rugby for 2 terms, and no football, which at least was less bad than rugby and cricket.
Back in music, ELO were getting Radio 1 airplay and I was happily recording stuff, which meant Showdown was in at 2. Rod, Ike & Tina, & Quo all went top 10 for me, while other newies included The Detroit Spinners getting a second hit of the year, Ghetto Child, a whimsical Bowie novelty flop endeared itself to small children, and some bigger ones, The Laughing Gnome, Paul Simon attempted some fab gospel, The Hollies kept on the CCR vibe with a cowboy song, Junior Walker covered Neil Diamond as their oldies continued to get UK releases and belated chart hits, Gilbert droned on a bit, and wannabe glam star Bobby McGee couldnt quite pull off a Suzi Quatro.
At the cinema in Gloucester, I went to see Jesus Christ Superstar, loved the songs, and a fab now-cult-fave movie called The Last Of Sheila, an all-star murder whodunnit with terrific performances and script. It's not been on TV in decades, and isn't available anywhere except on overpriced overseas DVD. Which is very very annoying! So many movies from the 60s and 70's (like a lot of the music) is now hard to find and forgotten. Not by me, though. For example, Star Trek was about to start repeating from the beginning on UK TV and I could finally get to see those few early episodes again, especially Where No man Has Gone Before which had a major impact on me in 1969, and the rest that I'd never seen (series 1 and 2, and part of 3). Hooray! And in colour! Hooray!

15th September 1973 Retro Chart
It's up for Ballroom Blitz, giving The Sweet a hat-trick of chart-toppers with the classic still-exciting Glam track, while highest new entry is Elton John and one of his great ballads, the title track from his forthcoming double-album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, probably his best album, new in at 8. In at 11, and one I didn;t know at the time, it's the ever-present Aerosmith debuting with the epic Dream On, out in the USA this week.
In a big week for high entries, Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, or Teddy Pendergrass and friends, enter at 25 with the Philly classic, The Love I Lost, Andy Williams covers Neil Sedaka and brings Solitaire into the chart at 26, outdoing Neil's version from earlier in 1973, and a 3rd song for Neil on the rundown, and at 27 it's country classic The Most Beautiful Girl from Charlie Rich, still 6 months away from hitting in the UK (as per usual in those days, US hits were often held back for ages), his 2nd chart entry.
Bryan Ferry gives Dylan a 2nd song on the chart, with the best version of A Hard Rain's A Gonna fall at 33, his first solo outing away from Roxy Music, and ahead of his covers album. The Temptations return at 46 with their version of The Undisputed Truth's Law Of The Land, a bit moodier and they push the original out, which is way funkier and faster. Colin Blunstone is on his 6th solo Retro hit, Wonderful at 68, The Four Tops are back again with Sweet Understanding Love, Greyhound are on single 5, Wily, Italy's Drupi enters early with Vado Via, and Roger daltrey is THinking of 2 chart tracks.

It's The Sweet topping my charts of 50 years ago - Ballroom Blitz becomes their 4th number one in a row! Hudson-Ford peak at 2, The Jackson 5 leap up to 5 with the synthtastic Skywriter for a 3rd top 10 of the year and 7th in total in 3 years. Mott The Hoople make it 3 top 10's in a row too, Memphis at 7, and David Essex gets his first with Rock On at 8. Geordie take Electric Lady higher than previous singles bar All Because Of You, while Quo, the Turners, and Rod threaten to the top.
As we settled into our new house at RAF Innsworth married quarters (still looking exactly the same 50 years on, pleasingly as if time has stood still near this part of Gloucester, I was ecstatic to find radio 1 radio reception round here was way better than the awful reception in the Lincolnshire sticks, and I could now tape records off Radio 1 as well as the chart show on Radio 2. Hooray! I still didn't manage to tape The New Seekers We've Got To Do It Now, new at 25. I got luckier with The Isley Brothers That Lady, as they return to the UK charts with new stuff for the first time in 4 years. Stealers Wheel get a 2nd chart hit too, setting Gerry Rafferty up for greater things in the future. 1 ( NEW ) BALLROOM BLITZ - The Sweet 2 ( 3 ) PICK UP THE PIECES - Hudson-Ford 3 ( 1 ) ANGEL FINGERS - Wizzard 4 ( 5 ) THE DEAN AND I - 10CC 5 ( 21 ) SKYWRITER - The Jackson 5 6 ( 2 ) MONSTER MASH - Bobby ‘Boris’ Pickett & The Crypt-Kickers 7 ( 25 ) ALL THE WAY FROM MEMPHIS - Mott The Hoople 8 ( 16 ) ROCK ON - David Essex 9 ( 4 ) DANCING ON A SATURDAY NIGHT - Barry Blue 10 ( 22 ) ELECTRIC LADY - Geordie

8th September 1973
It's a new number one for Manfred Mann, his first retro chart-topper, with Joybringer holding off the glam rok bombshell that is The Ballroom Blitz, The Sweet's greatest record just ahead of Hell Raiser, and that's a 5th or 6th top 10, 3 top 2's in a row. Rod Stewart gets a 3rd top 10, solo, plus one with Python Lee Jackson, and in a quiet week for new releases (no Record Mirror to comb through till next week, just Billboard magazine) it's a fairly slow chart. Seals & Croft get a 2nd chart entry, with We May Never Pass This Way Again - not quite up to Summer Breeze, but good. The Strawbs make it 3 - or rather dave Cousin does, as Hudson-Ford already are on their 3rd - with the decent Shine On Silver Sun, and I find that KC & The Sunshine Band (soon to change the music scene in 1974, end Glam and bring in disco) had an early single I'd not been aware of - new at 75, Blow Your Whistle is not bad, but way better to come.

8th September 1973 My actual chart of that week way back then
It's a quiet week back in 1973 this week, and also this week in my retro chart above, as Angel Fingers gets 2 weeks on top, with Monster Mash heading towards a novelty number 2 for Bobby Pickett & co - it's still a great Halloween song, and it already sounded old (10 years) in 1973, 50 years on and it's still known by all and sundry. 10CC get a 3rd top 5, and there's new entries from Rod Stewart and his unexpected cover of a Goffin & King 60's classic, Oh No Not My Baby at 24; Quo make it 3 in a row with caroline new at 28, and 60's icons Ike & Tina Turner are back with a stone-cold classic, Tina's own song, Nutbush City Limits at 29. John Peel reviewed it in Sounds magazine not keen on the synth sounds, but liking the rest of it. I loved all of it.
This was also the week we moved to Gloucester and I ran out of space for my personal charts in my full notebook. Pressured to feel I should be maturing aged 15 and in the last year before O levels - and still delaying going to the new school for another week - I very annoyingly stopped doing my personal charts. It wouldn't last, I eventually used an old schoolbook for my charts, expanded them to a top 30, and allowed any tracks in at all that I was enjoying and that were out to buy, no more stuck with the UK top 30 controlling what I listed, and it would make quite the difference to my enthusiasm. However, I hate a chart gap so I went back and made up some weekly charts for the rest of 1973 after the event (still using the UK charts and whatever I had taped off the radio as a guide) and got a pretty accurate load of charts as it was still fresh in my mind what I liked most. They will start next week.
