HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 1st OCTOBER 1989

Depeche Mode incur one of (if not the) biggest drops from number one as Personal Jesus tumbles all the way back to number nine. They make room for the brand new number one from the Beautiful South.



The Beautiful South came close to topping the chart in June when Song for Whoever spent three weeks at number two, stuck behind Back To Life by Soul II Soul. This time, You Keep It All In, goes one better, as it climbs three places to number one.

It’s a dog-fight at the top with Billy Joel just three points behind at number two, climbing fourteen places. We Didn’t Start The Fire is Billy Joel’s biggest hit since Uptown Girl also hit number two in 1983.

This week’s biggest climber is a massive leap of 27 places which sees the return of Belinda Carlisle, looking for her fourth number one with Leave a Light On.

The former number one from Tears For Fears dips two places to number four as the new single from Erasure, Drama!, climbs into the Top Five.

With just five new entries this week, Wet Wet Wet lead the way with Sweet Surrender in at number 14.

- What is the connection / link between the songs that entered at #10 (which climbs to #5) and the one that entered at #26 (which climbs to #17 this week)

Before the video we have Cathy Dennis enter the chart helped by D-Mob and she will later write big hits for other artists. Martika's cover of Carole King, which was jointly credited in my chart with the #1 "It's Too Late" in 1971, Sybil's cover of Dionne Warwick's 1963 hit written by Bacharach and David, reached #7 in my chart. De La Soul's song samples the instrumental from Peg by Steely Dan and the whistling from Otis Redding's "Dock Of The Bay".

I had to chart "Glamour Boys" this week, but there's a song a bit higher in the US chart that will chart in a week or two (and probably for many of you in February 1990 when it charts in the UK).

I should also promote this song, which under-charted, just #31 in the USA and not charting in the UK at all.

If you're referring to the Living Colour song, it's just entered the US top 40 but will only climb as high as #31.
