HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 8th OCTOBER 1989

After just a single week at the top of the chart, the Beautiful South relinquish the number one spot. It’s time for another number one from Belinda Carlisle as she draws level again with Depeche Mode on the Retro-Chart leaderboard with four apiece. It took Depeche Mode over six years to achieve their tally, Belinda has done this in less than two.



Leave A Light On becomes Belinda’s fourth number one, her first of 1989 following her trio of hits that hit the top last year from her Heaven On Earth album – Heaven Is A Place on Earth, I Get Weak and Circle In The Sand.

Billy Joel remains stuck at number two with We Didn’t Start The Fire, now twenty points adrift of the top as Belinda surges past him.

Last week’s number one, You Keep It All In, drops to number three as Drama! by Erasure contines to climb, up just a single place this week.

Belgian dance act Technotronic finally climb into the Top Five after three weeks at number 7 with Pump Up The Jam.

Joint biggest climbers are from Living In A Box with Room In Your Heart at number 8 and Milli Vanilli with Girl I’m Gonna Miss You at number 12, both up 14 places.

Highest new entry and straight in at number ten is from Deborah Harry with I Want That Man, back in the Top Ten for the first time since French Kissin’ In The USA peaked at number three in 1987.

This was the second single from her second album Shiver. It was produced & co-written by INXS Andrew Farriss. The answers to the questions I posed 2 weeks ago. Pandora's Box replaces the Wedding Present at number one. But Céline Dion's version failed to shift the Wedding Present's "2, 3, Go" from the top 7 years later.

The "link" between the #4 and the #12 is the video below, with the artist of #4 as the title and the title of #12 as the artist.



Dr Feelgood's biggest hit in my chart (and also the UK) "Milk And Alcohol" peaked at NM #2. The band featuring the female singer currently at #5 kept it off the top.

A return to the top gives the brilliant Sowing The Seeds Of Love a rare 7th week at number one, just ahead of a massive high new entry at 2 for Elton John, with his sweet, affecting ballad Sacrifice, follow-up to Number One Healing Hands. The Uk public were unmoved by both till they were re-issued as a double A side in 1990, at which point the UK agreed with me and made them a chart-topper, the record that reinvigorated Elton’s unfairly unfashionable and declining popularity. Since then, of course, he’s made a career out of back catalogue classics getting to number one! Not least the PNAU remix Cold Heart just topping the UK chart sampling a bit of Sacrifice in 2021 and guesting Dua Lipa. Guess I was right all along, then, about Sacrifice even if Elton was regarded as yesterday's news in the pop scene of the time.

Elsewhere: Oh Well up to 8. Oh well. Soul Sister leap to 11 with a bouncy track, Expose and Lisa Stansfield go top 20, Queen top 30, and new at 31 Norman Cook is back with the good For Spacious Lies. Who needs The Housemartins, eh, Norman? At 36 Sybil updates the lesser-known (and brilliant) Dionne Warwick/ Burt Bacharach song Don’t Make Me Over, and it’s not bad. Raze are back again with Break 4 Love re-charting at 38, while Martika takes Carole King’s lovely I Feel The Earth Move and removes all passion, but you can dance to it at 39, ditto D Mob debuting Cathy Dennis at 40 with C’mon And Get My Love. Two of the above went on to be successful song-writers, of many a pop and dance classic of the 90’s and 00’s: Clue: it’s Fatboy Slim and Cathy Dennis.

The Temptations, or at least a few of the original line-up, are back at 56 with All I Want Is You 21 years on from their first hit, Janet Jackson ‘s second single from Rhythm Nation, the Jam n Lewis-tastic album (ignoring the annoying spoken mini-tracks) marches forcefully in at 67, and Adeva’s back at 74. I Thank You. On TV? New sitcom “Nutt House” which I’ve forgotten all about – wikipedia reminds me it was 12-episode Mel Brooks series with the fabulous Brooks faves Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman as the stars. That’s good enough for me! I now need to buy them…sadly not available, of course! Julian Clary’s Sticky Moment’s funny, and Doctor Who another goodie, frustratingly about to be cancelled thanks to a nonce Exec.
