Welcome to Frank Edwin's 11/14/2021 Salad Bar🥗Top 100 weekly inclusive feast where we invite you to Chow Down on a fresh variety of tasty musical artist cuisine. Romaine Calm - Turnip the Beet - Find Inner Peas.
The Top 100 has just a small sampling of the artists worldwide that have music we enjoy sharing. We literally can't keep up with the number of new songs released weekly and new to us artists we are discovering on a daily basis from a plethora of sources.
There are currently over 200 songs waiting to debut on the buffet. To facilitate the opportunity of having more songs join the chart we are now giving 6 songs each week the special designation of #1 Salad🥗Song.
#1 Salad🥗Song: Dillbilly - Chaparral
Dillbilly (pronouns: they/them) is a genre-queer songmaker living in southeast Ohio. We are pleased to bring the title track of their tenth studio recording „Chaparral” to the apex of our musical feast in its 13th week on the chart giving Dillbilly their first #1 Salad🥗Song. On their bandcamp page we read:
"Raised in a rural trailer park near the Ohio River, Dillbilly grew up surrounded by cornfields and grain silos. More southern than midwestern, they were reared in the values of small-town life—but being queer in southern Indiana was not always easy. As soon as they finished high school, they went off to music school, embarking on a 20-year journey living in some of the most beautiful places. At 18, they won a piano scholarship that sent them to Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. Over the past two decades, they have been performing across North America, releasing nine full-length albums and contributions to soundtracks for movies and TV under their birth name. Most of those releases were self-recorded and self-produced. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2015, they have renamed their musical self.
“Dillbilly is an homage to where I come from,” they explain. “It’s an honoring and an uncovering of the complexity in growing up queer and non-binary in the Bible Belt. After I moved to Oakland, the community of artists I found really fortified and expanded what I thought was possible musically. I started to believe in the abundance of my wildest dreams. The permission to be my full self also helped with this. I was in a community that was able to see me how I’ve always seen myself…non-binary. Oakland empowered me to call myself by my true name (and pronouns).”
Written primarily in Maine, Indiana, and California, Chaparral [the album] dives deep into explorations of grief, resilience, and regeneration. “My intersectional identities bring up a broad range of interrelated topics,” says Dillbilly. “White privilege, white fragility, class dynamics, poverty, substance use, harm reduction, gender, racism, heartbreak, and mental health all have many overlaps.”
To engage with deeply fraught topics head on is a crucial first step toward understanding and reconciliation. Chaparral brings the deep and troubling to the surface, and in doing so lets in the sunlight. “I hope folks feel held and inspired,” explains Dillbilly. “In this life there is room for joy, struggle, and hope. I hope folks see parts of themselves reflected and confronted, especially others like me. I hope this record is a balm for those who are hurting.” A lush, moody, joyful tapestry of songwriting, musicianship, and soundscape, Chaparral is evocative, vulnerable, and profoundly beautiful."
Dillbilly summed up the story behind the video and the song’s meaning for Americana-UK: “‘Chaparral was a collaborative project made possible by Waxsimile Productions, Julie Wolf, Nino Moschella, and many crowd-sourced contributions. The video was filmed in Oakland and edited in Nashville while myself and the creative director of Waxsimile gave notes over zoom in Ohio and Chicago. Truly a pandemic creation. I knew I wanted a birds-eye view representing the California landscape, something that made you feel ‘right-sized’ when you saw it. We took that idea and expanded from there. Song meanings change and become more complex over time but when I wrote ‘Chaparral’ I was grappling with loss and recovering from chaotic substance use. I was really searching within and the metaphors of all the plants in that landscape were a pretty good example of resilience and regeneration. The recording process of this song, shaped by the lush arrangement and instrumentation, really expanded the meaning for me. Now it conjures up collective losses and struggles like white supremacy, climate change and how we have the same ability to heal, regenerate, and regrow with the wisdom of nature and our ancestors.”
#1 Salad🥗Song: BLUE SWANS - It's Been So Long (Since I've Seen Art)
For 12 weeks now BLUE SWANS, the moniker of Minneapolis queer artist Chris Swangim, has been exclaiming "It's Been So Long (Since I've Seen Art)", a story of longing for inspiration and a sense of normalcy that we've all missed over the past year.
“The song is inspired by a conversation Swangim had with her partner and fellow creative, about missing art galleries and museums, which have been a constant source of inspiration for the pair. Mid-pandemic, they found an outdoor sculpture garden outside of the city and documented the day in video. That experience is captured in the emotional verses of this song and finally brings the listener to a resolve with an expansive, triumphant ending.”
It is a pleasure to present BLUE SWANS with our Salad🥗Bowl in honour of their luscious descant being given the designation of a #1 Salad🥗Song.
#1 Salad🥗Song: gracie and rachel - speak (a whisper)
“is saying nothing better than saying it wrong?
is seeming weak really being strong?
is saying something better than nothing at all?
is taking the leap worth taking the fall?”
We are delighted to give self described “Piano-violin duo with boundary issues” gracie & rachel their first Salad🥗Bowl in honour of “speak (a whisper)” becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 12th week on the chart. It is included on their three song EP 'a whisper becomes a shout' which delves into the bare bones of their previous album ‘Hello Weakness, You Make Me Stronger.’
“this is the first fully self-produced collection of songs we’ve put out, and it feels incredibly full circle to get to share them with you in these reimagined, revamped ways.
these three songs, “trust (a whisper)”, “speak (a whisper)”, and “undo (a whisper)” were originally conceived as rather intimate songs but became more highly produced in the studio during the making of our album. and while we love how the songs evolved to be, we wanted to also honor these tunes for what we feel they are at their core: whisper songs.
this is our nod to saying bold things quietly, to turning the answer into the question. all song and album titles are lower case, all imagery is self-made. this is our effort to understate the more overstated songs off our record, to whisper the shouts, one word and note at a time, directly from us to you.”
#1 Salad🥗Song: Stephanie Anne Johnson and The Hidogs, "Gosh Oh Gee"
While growing up, Stephanie Anne Johnson’s ears were filled with the likes of Etta James, Cab Calloway, Bonnie Raitt, and Aerosmith. Those influences melded with guitar lessons, voice coaching, and a study of the classics, and a raw, soulful dreaminess began to emerge. The front person for the Tacoma-based band, The Hidogs, can don a cowboy hat and sing over a slide as old timers weep.
The Hidogs, which is comprised of dynamic drummer Arturo Ortega Marcos, pocket-perfect bassist Jesse Turcotte and the prolific Johnson, is a nimble trio equal parts capable of shaking the shingles off a rooftop as making any stage feel like a Sunday service.
Their music, which is rooted in all that’s American, expresses the pain of the past, the roots of the down home and the hope that hard work will lead to proper reward.
We are thrilled to give them their first Salad🥗Bowl in honour “Gosh Oh Gee” becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 12th week on the chart.
#1 Salad🥗Song: indaco duo - Cromoterapia
“ There was a lot of work behind this project, a work of complicity, synergy and also - like every artist par excellence - of sleepless nights. We are really happy to be able to bring to the ears of the world this…song that represents the two of us but we know that it also speaks for many young people in situations that are far from easy, which surely music cannot fix but can help to get over with some good energy. We can't wait to bring it live on stages and to see so many beautiful colorful people singing it with us. “
Indaco duo from Italy, featuring Simone Forte and Luisa Pistrin, brought the colourful “ Cromoterapia “ to the buffet 12 weeks ago. This week it joins the deliciously delightful #1 Salad🥗Songs at the top of the chart. It tells the connection between physical and spiritual ailments, caused by homophobia, distance, intolerance, ignorance, discrimination and the greyness of a society that does not educate to openness.
#1 Salad🥗Song: PK and the Mighty Seven - "Back Pocket" (Vulfpeck Cover)
PK and the Mighty Seven is a 9-piece band based out of Boston, USA playing only the best funk, soul, R&B, Motown, and pop from the 1960's to present. We welcome them to the pinnacle in their 9th week the chart and present them with our Salad🥗Bowl in honour of their cover of the Vulfpeck song “Back Pocket” becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song.
The band features female and male lead vocalists (Sarah and Prophet) and a three-piece horn section - a big sound for a big party that gets everyone out on the dance floor!
