Welcome to Frank Edwin's 11/21/2021 Salad Barđ„Top 100 weekly inclusive feast where we invite you to Chow Down on a fresh variety of tasty musical artist cuisine. Romaine Calm - Turnip the Beet - Find Inner Peas.
The Top 100 has just a small sampling of the artists worldwide that have music we enjoy sharing. We literally can't keep up with the number of new songs released weekly and new to us artists we are discovering on a daily basis from a plethora of sources.
There are currently over 200 songs waiting to debut on the chart. To facilitate the opportunity of having more songs join the buffet we are giving 6 songs each week the special designation of #1 Saladđ„Song.
#1 Saladđ„Song: Blu Ruckus · Advice
Blu Ruckus is the moniker of New York City based artist and producer Nolan Mendoza. We are delighted to find his âAdviceâ at the top of the chart in its 14th week giving it the distinction of a #1 Saladđ„Song. This is his second #1 on our buffet.
From an article by Culture Fix we read, âNYC based queer independent artist Blu Ruckus plays with experimental soundscapes on his latest creation Kid Orchid. The project, something of a sequel to a character previously crafted by the musician blends piano with electronic sounds that aim to âtransport the listener into a glitchy world of space, magic and machine.â
Blu Ruckus tells us âIâm responding to the times, trying to connect with people â trying to create a community and something new. Especially for our queer community.â
The EP follows âPoor Kid Orchid,â which Blu tells us is âan introduction to a character Kid Orchid and his quest to figure out where he belongs. In the follow up album we learn that Kid Orchid is actually an E.T. who has always thought he was human, but never fit in with the hypocrisy and intensity that is the human experience. The stress and chaos of 2020 made me think â what if as a society we would be better off in some E.T. simulation.â"
#1 Saladđ„Song: Oliver Fenelon Chee - High School Swansong
Oliver Fenelon Chee is a singer, songwriter and music producer based in Penang, Malaysia. It is a pleasure to present him with his first Saladđ„Bowl in honour of â High School Swansongâ being given the designation of a #1 Saladđ„Song in its 12th week on the chart.
"I started writing this song back in 2015 and over the years itâs been building as Iâve grown as a songwriter. If you look at the lyrics I think you can really pinpoint a slight shift in my maturity level through the song.
When I wrote, âIt was fun to pretend it was hardâ, I was honestly just hinting to how I wasnât putting all of me into school. I didn't value the lessons more than I valued appealing to people. Even if it made me look dumb, I got a response and I loved that. (toxic lol)
When I wrote âI regret not saying good-byeâ, it was a good one year later. Things got really emotional between the friend group and I definitely handled it poorly.... it's safe to say, we all did. But I could have done a better job at communicating. A WAY better job.
Bringing us to today; Iâm releasing all these songs after making the decision not to go to a college... Ironic considering the line, âAfraid to move into a fortuned dorm, yet Iâm just not too satisfiedâ, was written last year.
Whatâs nice though is the line where I acknowledged how i âperformedâ my identity. In alot of ways, we all still perform to each other, but I think Iâm learning to react naturally nowadays instead of reacting how i believe i should. if that makes sense. omg.
Overall, this is what I love about this song, itâs a short timeline of my transition from a kid to young adult, always still a little naive, but trying his best."
#1 Saladđ„Song: Sara Kays - Struck By Lightning (feat. Cavetown)
âI hope this song makes people want to check up on their friends and lay down next to them in silence when theyâre going through [things] and donât feel like talking.â
We are delighted to give Sara Kays and UK-based indie pop artist Cavetown their first Saladđ„Bowl in honour of their collaboration âStruck By Lighteningâ becoming a #1 Saladđ„Song in its 12th week on the chart.
Sara said: âA friend of mine struggled a lot with depression and didnât necessarily always talk to me about it. It can be frustrating when you know someoneâs going through something, but they wonât say anything. So, the idea is, âIâll sit out there with you in silence.â Around the same time, my âFor Youâ page had a ton of trending videos of people laying down in driveways in the rain. I brought all of that together, and it was really cool to duet with Cavetown. Iâm basically saying, âIâd get struck by lightning for you.ââ
Lauren VanDerLaan wrote the following for Pinkwifi:
"From the very moment Sara Kays picked up her first guitar, she made sure as many people as possible could hear and feel her passion for curating a mood through her music. She spent countless hours of her teenage years busking, and her persistence led her to the next level.
In 2018, Sara connected with producer Steven Martinez online, and made the trek from Indiana to Nashville to start working with him. One of the key items Sara had packed in her figurative artist toolkit was vulnerability. Each of her songs has been built with lyrics that offer an honest look at many of her experiences, including those with her mental health. Her almost 2 million followers on TikTok have connected with these songs, and today Sara is giving the world a few more to cozy up to!"
#1 Saladđ„Song: John Roberts - Divide People
âDance is transcendent. John Roberts is a believer. Forever consumed by the electronic, pop, and new wave of the â80s and â90s, music always percolated around the Emmy-nominated actor (as the beloved âBobâs Burgersâ character Linda Belcher), comedian, singer and songwriter...[H]is latest track âDivide Peopleâ appears on his debut full-length album Lights Out.
On the more politically relevant, Depeche Mode-fused âDivide People,â Roberts explores the world under the microscope of [the] former administration and coming out of that âhateful, divisiveness, racism, homophobia, and anti-semitism, Asian hate and kids in cages.â Motioning ahead, Roberts insists the song is beyond âhimâ now.
âIt stirred up something that's always been in this country,â says Roberts. âIt's just a message that we need to hear more. I'm a child of the civil rights movement, so it's just crazy that here we are still fighting the same kind of things. We need to come together. Everyoneâs getting their own tailored version of the story, so it's really about community and using your eyes, your ears, your brain, and your heart to bring people together.â - official press release
We are thrilled to give him his first Saladđ„Bowl in honour of âDivide Peopleâ becoming a #1 Saladđ„Song in its 13th week on the chart.
#1 Saladđ„Song: Jon Campbell - Howl & Haunted
Jon Campbell returns to the pinnacle of the Top 100 with âHowl & Haunted,â two more tracks from his album Wolfen. He shares more about the album and inspiration for the two songs on our chart:
âHowl sets an intention of healing and release for an album that deals with trauma.â⊠âI spent 22 years feeling disconnected and set apart, from ages 15 to 37. I believe that in sharing the story of that trouble and how I overcame it, I may be able to reach others who are in trouble, the way that music and art helped me stay afloat at times during those years when it felt like I wasnât going to survive.
âHaunted is the first song I wrote for the album. It begins with the literal trauma to my eyes when I was born which caused blood vessels to burst and apparently gave me a wolf-like appearance to my parents, who dubbed me âWolfenâ. In 2020, I thought about this in a sense of how personal trauma can be like a lens through which everything you see can appear darker or more threatening than it really is. I thought about it in the sense of the solitary, âlone-wolfâ nature that has followed me my whole life and how my own trauma is related to that...â
âI took a trip to Amsterdam in January 2020 in the midst of an intense depression⊠In this foggy and fairly agonizing state of mind I paid a visit to the Van Gogh museum. Like Joni Mitchellâs songs, Van Goghâs paintings had provided me emotional refuge since a young age⊠It seemed like the best place to escape the hell I was feeling internally to spend a cold, rainy afternoon with my old friend Vincent.
But once inside, it was the opposite of refuge. This was my first time in this museum and in retrospect I feel like I should have expected it but it caught me off guard that the very first thing in the museum is a timeline of his life on the wall about the traumas he suffered â his life delineated into events like: CUTS OFF EAR or SHOOTS HIMSELF FIRST TIMEâŠ
I saw the timeline of my own life written on the wall with all of my own traumas: being admitted to a psychiatric ward at 17, various alcohol poisonings and overdoses, various forms of abuse all laid out to see. I jumped onto that timeline like a train track.
Wolfen is a story told from the perspective of a character of that same name, imagining that instead of a nickname which was then replaced by âJon Campbellâ, that Wolfen has always lived alongside me; the part that is a âlone wolfâ, whose early childhood friends asked their mothers to pick them up from my house early because I insisted on just drawing instead of engaging with them. Itâs the part of me that wants to run away from any long-term relationship and opt for the solitude of my studio. Wolfen is also an album: a collection of 8 songs, 7 videos, paintings, drawings, images and texts which tell his story.â
We are honoured to present John with two more Saladđ„Bowls as âHowl & Hauntedâ become #1 Saladđ„Songs in their 11th week on the chart!!
#1 Saladđ„Song: Bobby Jo Valentine - Edge of the World
This week âEdge of the Worldâ joins the deliciously delightful #1 Saladđ„Songs at the top in its 14th week on the chart.
Hopeful poetry-loving singer-songwriter Bobby Jo Valentine is a proud supporter of equal rights and opportunities for all people. He believes that weâre all in this together; that âthe arc of the universe is long, but bends toward justiceâ; and that real justice means justice for everyone. Bobby is often invited to perform benefit concerts for many equal rights organizations, Pride festivals, and justice-oriented non-profits, including the National Safe Place Network and Family Promise.
He shares in the description for the song's video, âWherever you are in the world, I hope youâre happy and healthy. Iâve been lucky enough to perform a few outdoor shows over the past three months. I cannot tell you how delighted it made me to be back in front of people, laughing and sharing stories and songs. I miss you all! Iâm excited to share a brand-new music video for my song "Edge of the World." It's a call to bravery, to take a step out into the world again, to break through whatever bubble - comfortable or uncomfortable - we've built around ourselves. That bubble might be keeping us from what we're here to do - all the little ways that each of us can make the world a better place. Enjoy and share with your friends!â
