I actually get to say from the sublime, in a way, to the ridiculous on this thread!
7 Dancing in the Street - David Bowie, Mick Jagger
Not sure if there has been a critical reappraisal of this song, but I remember it getting more slagging and abuse than any other song in Smash Hits at the time. It really is embarassing to watch, the video was definitely the reason it got so much ridicule. History has tarred this song so long for me, I can never like it even in a jokey way.

5 Lipstick, Powder and Paint - Shakin' Stevens
New lows for Shaky but he will return in 1987, think he might survive the cut in 1986

4 Here We Go - The Everton Army
Is this the laziest Football song ever? It is definitely one of the worst.

3 Atmosphere - Russ Abbot
Not number one as it does what its supposed to do and its actually the only song in the top 50 I actually own. I have it on 7" no idea how I got it!! I also have 'Tarzan Boy' which was right at the bottom as I have a special guilty pleasure and nostalgia with that song hence why it hasnt appeared.

2 The Commentators – N-N-Nineteen Not Out
Whats worse than cricket, songs about cricket and even worse comedy songs about cricket and finally comedy songs about cricket which feature Rory Bremner. This maybe should be number one but...

My Worst Hit Song of 1985
Don't Mess With My Toot Toot - Denise LaSalle
I had managed to completely forget this song until it came on a TOTP rerun a few years ago and it all came flooding back. A horribly, annoying record that just drives you insane. I'm sure she is a lovely person but this't isnt an ear worm its a ear parasite, its basically a facehugger in music form!!

Rockin' Sidney did your number one initially.
Pie Jesu would be far and away my worst song of the year, but it saw the start of the "operatic" Sarah Brightman who would reach #1 in my chart twice and have other big hits. So no I don't hate operatic songs or Sarah Brightman in particular, just that.

Shaky didn't deserve to be in any worst songs list.

Shaky didn't deserve to be in any worst songs list. Not even A Little Boogie Woogie (In the Back of My Mind) This will be very high in 1987

"Girlie Girlie" is brilliant.
"N-n-n-nineteen Not Out" is phenomenally clever. The stats incorporation in particular. Good job Jim Laker didn't take that 20th wicket.
And frankly there's nothing wrong with the Russ Abbot single. Indeed it's a sort of long-term service award as he was releasing singles in the sixties in the Black Abbots and never scored a hit. Context is everything, "Atmosphere" was aimed at an audience that was not exactly going to be an habitué of Rough Trade...

But we went on a lot of holidays and was subjected to a lot of annoying music and it scars you. Don’t really care about context, it’s just personal. In context you could make a case for everything. I am not judging these songs by their art or legacy or even reason, just how much I like or not like them.

1986 is not disappointing, I have 69 songs already and that doesnt include any Uk hits not on Spotify and I haven't even looked at the US yet. We could be over 100!
yes 105!!

No Chris wont even be top 5 but Clare will be top 3 very probably The top 10 is the most clear cut yet, the gulf between 11 and 12 is enormous.

I expect one of the biggest selling singles of 1986 will be near if not at the top of your chart.

Noooooo - not Jermaine Stewart! Though I have no idea what my parents would have thought when I asked them to buy me the seven inch single in Gateways.

I'm just catching up with this, and there are a lot I love - but 'Solid' probably stood out to me the most. That is a classic!
