Welcome to Frank Edwin's 2/27/2022 Salad🥗Bar 101 weekly inclusive feast where we invite you to Chow Down on a fresh variety of tasty musical artist cuisine. Romaine Calm - Turnip the Beet - Find Inner Peas.
The 101 has just a small sampling of the artists worldwide that have music we enjoy sharing. We literally can't keep up with the number of new songs released weekly and new to us artists we are discovering on a daily basis from a plethora of sources.
There are currently over 150 songs waiting to debut on the chart. To facilitate the opportunity of having more songs join the buffet we are delighted to give 6 songs each week the special designation of #1 Salad🥗Song.
#1 Salad🥗Song: Sean O'Reilly - Blue | Joni Mitchell Harp and Vocal Cover
Play Piano, Harp, a little guitar. Sing a song. Write a tune. ...these are all sentence fragments.
We discovered our New Haven based singing, harping, piano-ing Sean O'Reilly in the Gay Music Center group here on Facebook.
It is a joy to place a cherry tomato on top of his cover of the title track from Joni Mitchell’s classic “Blue” album giving it the special designation as a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 11th week on the chart. Sean shares, “Blue…was released...50 years ago... It remains (and always will) one of my favorite albums.”

"I wasn’t present in the moment
Always reaching for the highs
I wasn’t ready for the valleys
How they bring you down
I’d used up all of my excuses
I was selfish I was blind
I guess I didn’t have the reason
To be the better man"
Peter Jöback is a Swedish singer, songwriter and actor. He shares, “[Better Man] is inspired by a quote from Gandhi; you have to be the change you want to see in the world. It’s about responsibility, to choose to be the better man is to start doing what’s right instead of doing what is selfish. We have a chance to change the world. We’re at the crossroads and the responsibility is on all of us. This is what this song is about; that we all, men and women, can chose to be The Better Man.”
We congratulate him on his first #1 Salad🥗Song in honour of “Better Man” being given the designation of a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 16th week on the chart.

Time waits for no Rooster!
Keyboardist Reuben/Ruby Jones has been one of our regular Salad🥗Song Chefs and for 10 weeks now we have been enjoying the culinary musical delights they bring with their brother Max Jones on guitar and vocals, and Patrick Spillane on drums and percussion as Big Rooster Jeff, the three-piece Prog-Pop trio from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
BRJs aim is to blend together the complexity and polyrhythms of prog and avant-garde rock with accessible pop melodies, production, and arrangement. We are happy to present them with their first Salad🥗Bowl as “Lapras” becomes a #1 Salad🥗Song.

bigrooster-jeff.bandcamp.com#1 Salad🥗Song: Anastasia Jane - All Because Of You
As a teenager coming of age and out to myself and others in the early 1980s and loving music I could only dream that there would be a day like today when there were so many different individuals expressing themselves through music in an open and honest way. We are grateful to have a diversity of talent with music, spoken word, and other forms of expression to share around the world through the Salad🥗Bar 101.
One of the things we enjoy is watching and hearing different artists growing musically and personally. Anastasia Jane, who describes herself as, "a proud transgender woman (she/ her) and supporter of the 2SLGBTQ+ community" is one of those artists and we have been enjoying “All Because Of You” for 12 weeks now. She shares, “the song celebrates one of my heroes, David Bowie, a pioneer of gender fluidity in popular culture.”
It is a joy to present Anastasia Jane with her 3rd Salad🥗Bowl as she reaches the pinnacle of the chart once more.

In his 9th week on the chart we are delighted to give Canadian rock singer and songwriter Eric Bolton, frontman for the rock band, Shy Harry, his first Salad🥗Bowl in honour of his debut original solo song ‘Genesis (Let There Be Love)’ becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 9th week on the chart.
Eric shared in an interview with Ai Love Music, "‘Genesis’ was/is my coming out song. A song of reaching a breaking point, knowing that there’s more to your life than what you’ve felt free to give. It’s a celebration of self, of love, and of new beginnings. It’s about beginning to build a world that is colourful. It is not just for me though, it could be about the colours of love and orientation, of skin or culture, of health and journeys, and so much more.
7 years ago, I came out to my family, at the same time I left the church. On May 24, 2020, I received a message from some of my family asking why I’m still not getting active in church when I’ll get my act together really, and reminding me that my life should be lived for God and the church and that people like me weren’t to have love or families but should take our orientation as a call to be celibate and just serve God more. I had been depressed for years with an inability to keep up with everything and putting myself down my whole life, very unsure what to do.
Then on May 25th, I replied to that message and for the first time ever stood up for myself. The wave of freshness inspired me to write this song that same day and I’ve been on a beautiful journey of rediscovering life ever since."

www.youtube.com/channel/UCvuSW6sB74JSej24Jd_A4Ow#1 Salad🥗Song: Izzy Heltai - My Old Friends
“I’ve been thinking ’bout my constant need to change/Every month it seems I’m wearing different outfits/And my fashion sense reflects my mental state.”
Izzy Heltai can be a bit impulsive. “I hate in-between spaces and I hate limbo and I hate non-concrete things,” he admits on a phone call with Audiofemme. Of course, over the past year, we’ve all found ourselves in pandemic limbo, unable to make any kind of plan at all. And Heltai was right there too, as lockdown set in – after living and playing music in Western Massachusetts for years, his lease was up, and he wasn’t sure to do. Leaning on that impulsivity as a cure for his anxiety, he moved back to Boston to live with his mom, but quickly realized that the natural landscape and the freedom of Western Mass was vital to his creativity and mental health. He returned as soon as he was able, and at the start of this year, began the process of recording a series of one-off singles including “My Old Friends,” a song, which he says is essentially about “searching for a sense of home and physical space that feels good to you, where you feel comfortable.”
Heltai’s favorite line in the song is perhaps even more specific: “I’ve been thinking ’bout my constant need to change/Every month it seems I’m wearing different outfits/And my fashion sense reflects my mental state.” Most of us do this to some extent, but for Heltai, there’s more to it; it’s born out of “this constant unrest, but also my need to be the most authentic me in the moment and be present with that,” Heltai says. Though the practice is presented in the song almost flippantly, there’s no question that Heltai’s trans identity plays into it. “I think about that all the time; for so long, I was told by the world that I could not be authentic in such a big way. Once I realized I had the tools to do that I became obsessed with finding what felt the most present and good in the moment whenever I could.” Text by Lindsey Rhoades
It is a pleasure to present Izzy with his 2nd Salad🥗Bowl in honour of “My Old Friends” becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 12th week on the chart.

The 101: Quarterflash - Valerie
I never suspected your intentions
When you showed unusual affection
But when you kissed my cheek
My world collapsed my knees went weak
That moment just made no sense
I lost my nerve and innocence
I turned and ran away
I'll never understand that day
Oh Valerie!
Oh! I never thought it would go this far
The 101 at the Salad🥗Bar is our new niche in time dedicated to the memory of Joshua Bluegreen-Cripps who loved everyone, celebrated everyone, and was always thinking of ways to bring people together with music.
The goal of the Salad🥗Bar is also to bring a diversity of people together with music and each week the BuffetMobile will take us to The 101 where a song that has special meaning or memories for Salad🥗Bar curator Frank Edwin will be found.
Frank Edwin’s first exposure to same sex attraction in music was not in a song about two men. In 1981 a song called “Harden My Heart” by Quarterflash was all over Top 40 radio, but in Spokane, Washington, USA the local album rock station was playing their songs “Williams Avenue” and “Valerie.” Frank Edwin was a junior in high school at the time and did double takes every time he heard “Valerie.” He kept asking himself, “Would a band really record a song about an experience between two women and would radio stations actually play it?” Yes! and another resounding YeS!! The band even released it as a single.
Husband and wife Mav & Rindy Ross fronted Quarterflash and you will see them again on this week’s chart.
