Welcome to Frank Edwin's 3/6/2022 Salad🥗Bar 101 weekly inclusive feast where we invite you to Chow Down on a fresh variety of tasty musical artist cuisine. Romaine Calm - Turnip the Beet - Find Inner Peas.
The 101 has just a small sampling of the artists worldwide that have music we enjoy sharing. We literally can't keep up with the number of new songs released weekly and new to us artists we are discovering on a daily basis from a plethora of sources.
There are currently over 150 songs waiting to debut on the chart. To facilitate the opportunity of having more songs join the buffet we are delighted to give 6 songs each week the special designation of #1 Salad🥗Song.
#1 Salad🥗Song: Jake Blount - You Can't Tell The Difference After Dark
Banjoist and fiddler Jake Blount has made reclaiming the Black and Indigenous roots of folk and old-time music a thesis of his musical career. Now, Blount draws inspiration from the music of blues queens — who laid the groundwork for modern country music — with his new video “You Can’t Tell the Difference After Dark.”
Jake shares in an interview, “I first heard a recording of Alberta Hunter singing this song in college. My professor, Dr. Michael Woods (better known as Doc), pulled it up in a class on African-American music — I can’t recall the exact title. He introduced it as an example of the way prominent Black musicians have threatened racist systems through sex appeal. It stuck in my memory, but I had no thought of playing it at the time…”
Country Queer: So the first thing we find out is that it’s dawning on the singer just why it is that they’re less popular in the daytime: it’s because they’re “brown as a berry.” But “you can’t tell the difference after dark.” This is a jaunty song filled with brilliant comic lines, but that would seem to belie a deeply painful realization that underlies the lyric. Any thoughts on that?
Jake: Well, I frequently introduce this song as “dedicated to white twinks,” and this is why! It’s a sad reality that Black people are often overlooked in sexual and romantic contexts; Western beauty ideals tend not to welcome many of our features (except when white people imitate them). The queer community is no exception, unfortunately — I think most of us have seen a Grindr profile or two that says “no Blacks or Asians.”
That being said: my immediate reaction was to assume the song was about colorism within the Black community. The idea that light skin is more attractive is pervasive in communities of color as well as among white people. Dark-skinned Black women are often mistreated and made to feel ugly by their families and other members of the community – including potential love interests. There are loads of folk and blues songs from Black men with lyrics reflecting that – take this line from Sid Hemphill’s “John Henry”: “I don’t like no/red-black woman/like myself!”
Country Queer: When you sing, “Why must the boys act so shy?,” it sets up the song as a queer take. But the big punch comes from that first bridge, which takes it into the realm of queer longing. It’s not clear whether this longing is destined to remain unrequited because the object is straight, but the song suggests the possibility that the other party has, on the DL, enjoyed the singer’s favors “after dark”. The darkness hides two very salient traits of the singer: race and gender.
Jake: I love that this song leaves ambiguity there; is the subject of the song rejecting the singer due to their race, or are they simply unwilling to own up to their attraction in the daylight? That’s a dynamic familiar to queer folks of all races.” Complete interview found on Country Queer:

jakeblount.com#1 Salad🥗Song: Marco Mengoni - Cambia Un Uomo
Italian singer Marco Mengoni has an impressive 7+ million views on YouTube of his video for “Cambia Un Uomo (Change a man).” We give props to Genny Random who introduced us to Marco through #gaylistitaly: the playlist with releases by artists of #lgbtqia liking in #Italy.
It would be awesome if all the artists at the Salad🥗Bar had 7+ million video views, song streams, or album purchases. We want you all to know whether you have 0 to 10 million of any of those things it is our pleasure to support you in this small way.
“What is "Change a man" about? ... an invitation to accept yourself as you are , between strengths and weaknesses, learning to forgive yourself whenever you are unable to go beyond your limits, embrace change with joy , courageously face our own bigger fears.
The message that is made even more intense and moving by the gospel matrix of the piece, which strongly recalls the R&B nuances typical of the 60s; sound that goes perfectly with Mengoni's soft and warm voice, which makes the song sound like a reflection, a prayer of hope that comes from the depths of the soul and feelings.
Directed by Roberto Ortu, the clip follows the same emotional tension as the song and builds an intimate and at the same time evolving narrative: from the initial immersion in Marco's childhood and more personal memories (on which family and family photos are projected of his past), to the many characters who appear outside the case in which the artist is locked up. One above all is the man on horseback who gallops around the display case and whom Marco follows with his gaze that tells of a profound connection, made up of gratitude, support and complicity. It is, in fact, the father of the singer-songwriter, who in the video plays the role of the knight.
"Change a man" is a path that speaks of origins and evolution , also through the movements of the earth that rises, mixes under the feet of those who alternate outside the display case: a child playing, first with his father then alone, an elderly bass player, a dancer who almost seems to interpret a prayer with her body and again a preacher, until the final catharsis with Marco, outside the case, dominated by a waterfall of earth which, moving in reverse, speaks of freedom and rebirth. Forgiveness, which arrives at the end of the path and of the video, takes the features of a collective, liberating, joyful dance, which breaks down all barriers...” from the official press release
We congratulate Marco on his first Salad🥗Bowl in honour of “Cambia Un Uomo” being given the designation of a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 13th week on the chart.

Northern Virginia songwriter and acoustic fingerstyle guitarist Yasmin Williams returns to the pinnacle of the 101 where we are pleased to present her with her second Salad🥗Bowl in honour of “Sunshowers” being given the designation of a #1 Salad🥗Song in its 11th week on the chart.
“A sunshower is the phenomenon of rain falling while the sun is shining. On my record, Urban Driftwood (SPINSTER, 2021), “Sunshowers” is meant to serve as a light-hearted, optimistic, and hopeful introduction to the album, to mimic how I believe most people around the world were feeling at the start of 2020, before the pandemic, while also hinting at the danger that was looming, the pandemic itself. My goal for the video was to capture the hopeful spirit of both the song and the start of 2020 without actually alluding to the trouble and complications that were ahead of us like the title of the song does.”

www.youtube.com/c/OscarZia1#1 Salad🥗Song: Althea Talbot-Howard: Rievaulx: A Study in Memory - In Arch Form for Double Reed Quartet / Needleman, Rothman, Zdybel-Nam
Many nutritionists say that a healthy salad includes a variety of colours so here on the Salad🥗Bar we enjoy sharing a diversity of musical talent and genres. 8 weeks ago we welcomed oboist Kathryn Needleman back to the buffet as part of the Double Reed Quartet performing Althea Talbot-Howard's: Rievaulx: A Study in Memory - In Arch Form.
Althea Talbot-Howard was born in Nigeria, but spent her infancy and childhood in England and Australia… Based in London, Althea commenced her professional career in 1992, performing as an Oboe concerto soloist, recitalist & orchestral guest principal until 2017, when she formally retired from Oboe performance, owing to a left hand injury…
Having long desired to compose as a child - but frustrated by not knowing how to develop a musical idea – Althea began again in 2014, by writing pedagogical recital music for her Recorder pupils.
Althea shares, "Rievaulx - the ruined abbey on the North Yorkshire Moors near Whitby - was once a Cistercian monastery. In August 1990, a friend who was studying on the Royal Academy of Music's postgraduate course with me, kindly invited me to visit Yorkshire. I stayed with him and his parents for three days, and, during that time, we drove over to Rievaulx Abbey.
We arrived at the end of day, and we were the only ones there. We were able to walk straight onto the site, and I really enjoyed seeing this beautiful monument for the first time, just as the late summer day began to draw to a close.
Rievaulx Abbey was only in use for 400 years. It has been a ruin longer than it served as a functioning monastery! For many centuries, visitors have traveled from near and far to see it. Some of those happy occasions feature towards the middle of the piece.."
Althea Talbot-Howard, Aluphone
Katherine Needleman, oboe and cor anglais/English horn
Melanie Rothman, oboe d'amore
Katarzyna Zdybel-Nam, bassoon
4 Salad Bowls have been specially crafted to present to Althea, Katherine, Melanie, and Kataryzna in honour of “Rievaulx” becoming a #1 Salad🥗Song.

The 101: Bobby Jo Valentine - Wild, Wild Heart
“So if you think that staying here will keep you safe,
It won't...
So stumble from the creek of what you think you know
To the Sea of what you don't
Sometimes the nest becomes a cage
And what you need is right outside the dome
You have got a wild, wild heart
Time to let it go, go go”
The 101 Flashback at the Salad🥗Bar is our new niche in time dedicated to the memory of Joshua Bluegreen-Cripps who loved everyone, celebrated everyone, and was always thinking of ways to bring people together with music.
The goal of the Salad🥗Bar is also to bring a diversity of people together with music and each week the BuffetMobile will take us to the 101 Flashback where a song that has special meaning or memories for Salad🥗Bar curator Frank Edwin will be found.
Hopeful poetry-loving singer-songwriter Bobby Jo Valentine is someone we have enjoyed listening to and following for more than 10 years now. He is a proud supporter of equal rights and opportunities for all people. He believes that we’re all in this together; that “the arc of the universe is long, but bends toward justice”; and that real justice means justice for everyone. Bobby is often invited to perform benefit concerts for many equal rights organizations, Pride festivals, and justice-oriented non-profits, including the National Safe Place Network and Family Promise.
Frank Edwin will have the privilege of seeing Bobby Jo in concert for the first time on March 10 at a private men’s retreat in the rustic desert wilderness of Arizona so we wanted the BuffetMobile to take you to 2018 where we join him in another beautiful outdoor landscape for the video of “Wild, Wild Heart” a song he shares that he wrote, “about making the braver wilder choices in life that grow us and make us better.”
