Both the UK and USA have "frozen" their singles charts this week. I'm able though to take advantage of a re-issue that is allowed in courtesy of it also being a double A-side so whilst I charted "Computer Love" in 1981, I am able to chart "The Model" now. And as we all know, once they flipped the main credited side they had a far bigger hit in the UK, a number one in fact.

A sprinkling of new entries, but still enough to grab a couple of classics by Air Supply, a song that enters the US top 40 this week, and the Stranglers' introduction to their "new sound" with a song that has 3 bars of 3 beats then one of 4 beats, thus a full riff of 13 beats, but the vocal part is 3 beats per bar throughout.
So there are 2 songs in the chart called "Sweet Dreams" but they are totally different. Air SUpply's is an original song written by member Graham Russell, whereas Elvis Costello's is a cover of the song made more famous by Patsy Cline.

Air Supply get their 2nd #1 after "All Out Of Love".
The highest new entry this week is Shakin' Stevens with a rarity - a hit he wrote himself.
The chart does however have 3 cover versions as new entries - and 1982 is going to have a number of classic covers. "Falling In Love Again" dates back to 1930 as a German version originally by Marlene Dietrich but she also recorded an English version and has been covered many times. This one however is quite a fascinating cover, a shame it only reached #70 in the UK chart.
Also among the covers is Elkie Brooks covering a Chris Rea song that was a hit in 1978, not that long ago. Sammy Hagar's version of "I've Done Everything For You" was the original and then covered by Rick Springfield, but now he's the one doing the cover version - originally recorded by Erma Franklin in 1967, she the sister of Aretha, but was probably better known for the version by Big Brother & The Holding Company with Janis Joplin on lead vocal. Erma's originally was eventually a UK hit in 1992.
Landslide was Olivia Newton John's last bona-fide UK hit (i.e. ignoring the Grease megamix) but she had more hits in the USA and some of them are likely to chart here. "Love In The First Degree" by Alabama is a song you might not be familiar with but they even sing "I'm guilty of love in the first degree".. not sure that was enough of a steal by S/A/W then and they may have had to clear it first.
Incidentally, having had a cover of a 30s song enter this week, Bananarama will be along soon with a cover of a 30s song (joined by the Fun Boy Three). For the love of the girl-group, the Go-Gos are also on my playlist. And they of course have a tenuous connection with the Fun Boy Three too.

1982 is a year with several classic covers and one of them is a cover of a song by Jon & Vangelis. The Brown Sauce song was primarily a B.A. Robertson song. He will have to wait until 1989 to have composed a number one, whereas if it follows my chart at the time Jon & Vangelis will have a composition reach #1 later this year, but we'll have to see how it all shuffles out.

So this week Air Supply hold on to #1 leaving the Stranglers at #2, the same position it peaked in the UK, but actually the Stranglers have had an NM #1 with "No More Heroes" in 1977.
Meanwhile XTC fly in at #3 with their classic "Senses Working Overtime", suggesting it will most likely climb to #1 next week. Their highest peak so far prior to this was #6 with "Making Plans For Nigel".
Confusing many, the OMD song starts with the words "Joan Of Arc" but that was the title of their last single and this one is called "Maid Of Orleans" and appears to have bagpipes in it, but it's all synthesized.
Here's another of those covers - Tight Fit now longer a medley group but just one song, a cover of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". The Tokens version reached NM #8 in 1961.

"When All Is Said And Done" for the future # 1 !
Unfortunately you (and the most other active forum members) dislike my SOTY of 1982 very much.

"When All Is Said And Done" for the future # 1 ! Unfortunately you (and the most other active forum members) dislike my SOTY of 1982 very much. It's due to chart on 6 February but won't get anywhere near #1. Most of my favourite songs on the next playlist happen to also be what were the biggest hits: Love Plus One, (A) Town Called Malice, See You, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Go Wild In The Country, T'Ain't What You Do, I Love Rock N Roll and... Mickey! (Not listed in a particular order). That's 8 songs which all reached the UK top 10 and are all brilliant, 2 of them covers. But what a classic list that is.. Don't expect the Goombay Dance Band to achieve much though (not on the next playlist).

My music highlights of 1982 : Save Your Love, When All Is Said And Done, My Camera Never Lies, Lightning Flash (Brotherhood of Man), Fantasy Island, I'm Undecided (Tight Fit), I Feel Love Comin' On (Dana), Head Over Heels and ... One Two Three Bananas.
Marga was a member of popular Dutch girl group Luv'. Luv' had some big hits in European charts (but not in UK), so maybe you heard any their songs.

I always thought it was a mistake not to release When All Is Said And Done as a single in the UK - I think it would have given them their last big hit in that era of their career.
One of their best songs.

The UK public was amazingly resistant to Air Supply and they had several great singles which missed out completely here but I don't remember Sweet Dreams at all.

"Sweet Dreams" by Air Supply and "When All Is Said And Done" by Abba both reached the US top 40.
The UK were resistant to Journey too. In actual fact the song that just charted, "Open Arms" was their biggest US hit peaking at #2 and it's a ballad.
I hope you just "checked out" Sweet Dreams. I think the official video is live - there's another video from Australia which is closer to the studio version but misses out bits of the instrumental intro and the big instrumental break before the climax is cut short too.
That is 4 charts now from 1982, and I haven't scored up the next playlist yet, but I've listed a number of songs that are on it, that were all top 10 hits in the UK and are all great.

One of their best songs. I did the ranking with all ABBA songs. "When All Is Said And Done" was on 3rd place (behind "That's Me" and Honey Honey").

1982 is getting into full swing in this week and the 3 weeks that immediately follow it which are full of classic songs. As XTC rise to the top it is under threat by Haircut 100 entering at #8.
The next entry "Go Wild In The Country" was actually covered by the Wedding Present as one of their Hit Parade B-sides.
Who is Adrian Gurvitz? "Classic" is a ballad but in 1968 he was in the band Gun and wrote their classic song "Race With The Devil" and played that rock riff. The song was recently covered by Girlschool (but wasn't an NM hit). It reached NM #6 but I felt that particular period was extremely strong and it would otherwise have potentially been a top 3 hit.
One "Mirror Mirror" enters as the other departs, and we also have lost one of the "Sweet Dreams" entries this week.

The Soft Cell entry is interesting - it isn't the structure of a normal pop song, but it's one you end up listening to what he's singing about and it ended up being something of a classic.
Mickey was a big pop hit written by Chinn-Chapman and it was released the previous year but failed. The song was also a cover of a Racey song (with a female name instead of Mickey) but the chant "oh Mickey you're so fine.." was new to this version. Run DMC appeared to copy that bit for "Tricky" by they were sued for copying "My Sharona" rather than this song. Chinn-Chapman produced "My Sharona" but didn't write it, and I wonder if perhaps they'd contributed enough to that song to not get sued if they think there's a similarity.
Abba come in 3rd. All their hits so far have reached the top 10 with the exception of "I Have A Dream" which stalled at #20 in December 1979. With a big influx of big ones the next two weeks I think this one will also miss out but will probably get higher than #20.

From ABBA tracks some hits weren't represented in "Gražios Dainos" (Fernando, Chiquitita, Lay All Your Love On Me, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Does Your Mother Know, maybe anything else)

The real contest this week was the Jam vs Depeche Mode for the highest entry and they are both rather brilliant songs. The Jam's single flew straight in at #1 in the UK chart whilst Depeche Mode made a relatively slow climb up to its eventual peak of #6 so you probably wouldn't have known they were out the same week. For Depeche Mode it was the first hit without Vince Clarke, and was written by Martin Gore.
Two classic covers but many wouldn't have known Joan Jett was a cover, but the Arrows did it first. This was the biggest hit version in the USA but in the UK the Sausage Rolls parody was bigger and possibly Britney too.
The Fun Boy Three and a cover of a song from 1939 help Bananarama to get their first ever chart entry, and another all girl-group the Go-Gos also get an entry, the latter group having already charted with "Our Lips Are Sealed" which Jane Wiedlin co-wrote with Terry Hall and the Fun Boy Three would also have a hit with it.
Yet another girl-group the Pointer Sisters chart with something that sounds like it comes from the 60s Phil Spector era.
Robert Palmer hasn't exactly covered "Some Guys Have All The Luck". His song has the same title and the same tune in the chorus, but otherwise it's totally different. So really a sample, but with the same title. Done by the Persuaders in 1974 (NM #11) the original arrangement would be picked up by Rod Stewart in 1984 and then Maxi Priest did a reggae version getting the biggest UK hit with it.

Abba climb from #23 to #15, and "Head Over Heels" is also due in next week. But so are "Party Fears Two", "Run To The Hills", "Poison Arrow", "Cardiac Arrest" and "Do You Believe In Love"

It will get a bit quieter over the next 2 weeks. But this week for new entries in addition to last week is massive - all the biggest 3 entries are total classics as Iron Maiden pick this moment to release their first actual classic song, which duly went top 10 at the time - not flying straight in there but with a normal climb up the chart. All of the highest 4 entries in my chart reached the UK top 10 (albeit Huey Lewis took 4 years to get there, and then only as a double-A-side with a big song from a film soundtrack). So it indicates what "Cardiac Arrest" and "Head Over Heels" were up against - two songs by major artists that both failed to reach the UK top 10 and against this competition they could end up the same way.
