Another year over, and after 3 PMs, 4 chancellors and 22 FragChart #1s (one of which lasted almost as long at the top as Liz Truss), it's time for the traditional Top 200.
2514 songs from my longlist were whittled down to 1176 (about 22 per week) in my weekly playlists, of which 604 made my top 60 (about 11 per week, and more than 2021 despite that year having an extra chart).
As usual, the songs are ranked statistically (60 pts for a week at #1, down to 1 point for a week at #60), and then the top 100 (plus a few wildcards) are re-ranked manually. Songs that were in last year's top 100 are excluded. This year, rather than cherry-picking a dozen or so, I've chosen just 5 wildcards: four songs from my current chart, plus the 101st-ranked song, which had exactly as many points as the 100th.
Let's begin!
200 - 176
200 Picture - The K's (#9, January) 199 Every Morning - The Avenues (#22, July) 198 You've Got a Friend - The Cloverhearts (#19, March) 197 STAY.GO. - Ultra Mega Cat Attack (#18, March) 196 Do You Know Better - The Pleasure Dome (#6, January)
195 Favourite Underdog - Twister (#10, December) 194 No Rules - The Venomous Pinks (#23, April) 193 Get out of My Way - Sator (#17, June) 192 Brassic - Grade 2 (#14, November) 191 Groovy Xmas - The Linda Lindas (#3, December)
190 Dance With Me - The Twenty Two (#7, December) 189 Fugazi - The Hunna (#16, September) 188 Merry Christmas Everyone - Cold Years (#2, December) 187 The Day Our Music Died - Andy and the rockets (#20, April) 186 From Hell to Here - Himalayas (#8, December)
185 Better Than Dead - Grumpster (#12, June) 184 IMPERIALISM (feat. Ashrita Kumar of Pinkshift) - Anti-Flag, Ashrita Kumar (#12, September) 183 I Ain't No Miracle Worker - The Hellacopters (#28, July) 182 Unknown Male 01 - Edit - Biffy Clyro (#17, August) 181 Witching Hour - Black Map (#16, January)
180 Unstoppable - MxPx (#13, October) 179 I Know - The Crooks (#16, October) 178 King of the World - Reno Divorce (#16, January) 177 All Your Bridges Are Burning - Long Version - The Chuck Norris Experiment (#18, June) 176 Bring Us Down - The Luka State (#15, May)
A couple of Christmas songs had enough of a run near the top of the chart to make the overall top 200, with Cold Years set to feature a few more times in this rundown. Biffy Clyro are no strangers to my year-end chart, clocking up a 14th entry but failing to crack the top 100 this time. Their best-ever is 'Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies', #9 in 2007. 'Unknown Male 01' was actually a re-issue: it only managed a single week at #60 during 2021, but was much more successful at the second attempt.

You'll be shocked to hear that Biffy will also be in my year-end chart, though somewhat higher...
Also enjoyed Linda Lindas, Luka State and Ultra Mega Cat Attack (what a band name!) from this set.

Sometimes I do pick songs for my longlist purely based on the band name, and Ultra Mega Cat Attack is definitely one of the best I've heard this year!

90 - 81
90 Bounding Main - The Rumjacks (#3, January) 89 Zero - Dead Pony (#4, June) 88 Interstellar Communication - The Young Rochelles (#6, June) 87 Reno - Jaws the Shark (#2, November) 86 Spaceship - All Waffle Trick (#6, February)
85 The Boy I Was Before - The Howlers (#9, September) 84 Honeybrains - Royal Blood (#8, March) 83 32 - Cold Years (#4, March) 82 f*** Me It's All Gone Wrong - Dirt Box Disco (#5, January) 81 Chasing Down The Sun - The Continentals (#11, July)
Royal Blood are chart stalwarts since the 2017 reboot, with three top 100 entries in 2017 followed by five (including three of the top 12) last year. 'Honeybrains' is their only entry this year, but their 10th overall. I'm extremely excited to be seeing them supporting Muse in June.
Last year, Cold Years beat all of those hits with 'Headstone' at #6, and they've bested Royal Blood again, with more to come too.
Dead Pony previously appeared as CRYSTAL in my year-end charts; this is their first time in the top 100, but their second time won't take as long...
Previous appearances:
Cold Years 2021: #6 - Headstone 2022: #123 - Jane 2022: #188 - Merry Christmas Everyone
CRYSTAL/Dead Pony (new peak) 2019: #153 - Speak Of The Devil 2020: #110 - Sharp Tongues 2022: #119 - War Boys
Royal Blood 2017: #33 - How Did We Get So Dark? 2017: #57 - I Only Lie When I Love You 2017: #71 - Hook, Line & Sinker 2021: #8 - Oblivion 2021: #9 - Limbo 2021: #12 - Hold On 2021: #37 - Typhoons 2021: #75 - Boilermaker 2021: #140 - Sad But True
The Young Rochelles (new peak) 2022: #175 - Haunted

80 - 71
80 Eyes Of Oblivion - The Hellacopters (#5, January) 79 Young Meteors - The Vaccines (#10, April) 78 I Don't Need A Lot - CRYSTAL (#10, September) 77 Sorry - Flatfoot 56 (#6, May) 76 Problem - The Dreadnoughts (#4, May)
75 Morning View - Sophisticated Dingo (#8, July) 74 Slay - Nerf Herder (#4, October) 73 My Love - Florence + The Machine (#3, March) 72 DEEP CUTS - You Me At Six (#9, August) 71 Inflame the Light - Head Smashed (#4, February)
...in fact, the second Dead Pony entry is right here! This set also sees The Hellacopters' first top 100 hit - the best of their three year-end chart entries this year. Two other bands debuting this year, Sophisticated Dingo and Head Smashed, have more to come.
Meanwhile, You Me At Six narrowly beat their previous best, achieved 12 years ago. Florence + The Machine make their 9th YEC entry, with the 10th yet to come. 'Shake It Out' would have done very well, had I done a year-end chart in 2011.
Previous appearances:
CRYSTAL/Dead Pony (new peak) 2019: #153 - Speak Of The Devil 2020: #110 - Sharp Tongues 2022: #89 - Zero 2022: #119 - War Boys
Florence + The Machine 2009: #5 - Rabbit Heart (Raise Me Up) 2009: #19 - Drumming Song 2009: #51 - Dog Days Are Over 2009: #196 - You've Got The Love 2010: #60 - Cosmic Love 2010: #67 - Heavy In Your Arms 2010: #72 - Dog Days Are Over 2019: #94 - Moderation

Those of you still scanning for band names might notice Charlie Bit My Finger, presumably named after the famous YouTube video. This set also includes two songs from BRKN LOVE, one of my favourite bands of the year - still more to come from them.
Previous appearances:
The K's 2018: #7 - Glass Towns 2018: #40 - Got a Feeling

60 - 51
60 sh*t's Gonna Be OK - I Fight Dragons (#1, January) 59 Curious - Franz Ferdinand (#1, February) 58 Focus Coin - Gogol Bordello (#6, July) 57 I've No More f***s to Give - Electric Timebomb Remix - Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq, Victor Ghastly's Electric Timebomb (#1, July) 56 Blood Red Rain - Head Smashed (#5, April)

The 'sweary outlook on life' battle has finished - victory for 'sh*t's Gonna Be OK' (#60) over 'f*** Me It's All Gone Wrong' (#82). After evaluating these two options, you might find yourself without any more f***s to give, as Thomas Benjamin Wild Esq did in July.
A third #1 in this set comes from Franz Ferdinand - their first #1 since 2004, and their first year-end top 100 entry since 2017.
Previous appearances:
Circa Waves (new peak) 2017: #124 - Somebody Else 2019: #185 - Jacqueline 2022: #107 - Do You Wanna Talk

I Fight Dragons 2020: #103 - A New Brain 2021: #17 - Move

I think Sophisticated Dingo is my favourite of the recent band names 'Curious' did very little for me. I do like BRKN LOVE though; their album should be coming up in my year-end list.

40 - 31
40 Villain - Crash Romeo (#2, October) 39 The Streets I Call My Own - Booze & Glory (#2, May) 38 Under The Surface - Baby Strange (#5, February) 37 Let It Die - Ellie Goulding (#1, November) 36 P.A.R.T.Y. - Alestorm (#3, May)
35 Crazy - Dirty Fences (#3, June) 34 Any Minute Now - Screeching Weasel (#5, June) 33 June Carter Cash (Lost and Found) - Bowling For Soup (#1, April) 32 I Killed Dee Dee R. - Ratbones, The Jasons (#9, May) 31 Every Night - flor (#2, September)
I tend to compile these charts by splitting the songs into rough groups of 15-20, and then ranking the groups in turn, starting with the lowest. Each year, there's a song or two that bubble up and ends up much higher than their seeded spot - Alestorm's 'P.A.R.T.Y' is one of those this year, rising from the 4th group to #36.
Ellie Goulding's 'Let It Die' was the #1 with the lowest initial entry position, rising from #55 to #1 in the space of a month.
Previous appearances:
Baby Strange (new peak) 2022: #157 - Poor Old Me
Bowling For Soup 2002: #27 - Girl All The Bad Guys Want 2002: #179 - Emily 2007: #127 - High School Never Ends 2021: #56 - Getting Old Sucks (But Everybody's Doing It) 2021: #85 - Where's the Love (with Hanson)
Dirty Fences (new peak) 2021: #68 - One In Ten 2021: #200 - Heartache Parade
Ellie Goulding (new peak) 2010: #118 - Starry Eyed

30 - 26
Getting into the business end now!
30: It's Always Sunny in Quarantine - Space Monkey Mafia (#1, December)
"When I said take my breath away, this wasn't what I meant" - a charming story of love and betrayal in a COVID climate. Chart debut.
29: Tooth & Claw - Lawmaker (#3, April)
Definitely the band of the year, Lawmaker are a regular fixture with their shouty, defiant Irish-pub rock and heavy-hitting instrumentals. Chart debut.
28: Don't Put the Chimp in Charge - Ricky Rochelle (#1, January)
Ricky Rochelle spent the first three weeks of the year at #1 with this... cautionary tale of the havoc an intelligent escaped monkey can do.
Previous appearance: 2022: #49 - Work Of Art
27: Will Of The People - Muse (#1, June)
"We'll smash your institutions to pieces" Protest-rock from Muse? Of course it's going to be a #1 for me. This was the third time Muse were #1 on my birthday. Oddly, one of these ('New Born') was also year-end #27. This is their sixteenth year-end top 30 appearance and 29th overall.
Previous appearances*: 2001: #4 - Bliss 2001: #27 - New Born 2001: #28 - Plug In Baby 2001: #69 - Hyper Music 2001: #135 - Feeling Good 2002: #7 - Dead Star 2002: #11 - In Your World 2002: #54 - Feeling Good 2002: #152 - Hyper Music 2003: #4 - Time Is Running Out 2003: #113 - Hysteria 2004: #10 - Hysteria 2004: #79 - Sing For Absolution 2006: #1 - Knights Of Cydonia 2006: #18 - Starlight 2006: #35 - Supermassive Black Hole 2007: #7 - Map Of The Problematique 2007: #28 - Invincible 2009: #27 - Uprising 2009: #46 - Undisclosed Desires 2010: #7 - Resistance 2010: #90 - Neutron Star Collision 2017: #34 - Dig Down 2018: #30 - Pressure 2018: #106 - The Dark Side 2018: #109 - Thought Contagion 2018: #124 - Something Human 2021: #24 - Citizen Erased (XX Anniversary RemiXX)
26: The Lightning II - Arcade Fire (#5, March)
"A day, a week, a month, a year" The Arcade Fire have sometimes failed to match the heights of their first album, but this track would fit right in there. Full of energy and instantly recognisable as one of their hits, this deserved higher than their #5 placing back in the Spring.
Previous appearances*: 2005: #1 - Rebellion (Lies) 2005: #6 - Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out) 2005: #18 - Cold Wind 2005: #27 - Wake Up 2005: #53 - Neighbourhood #2 (Laika) 2006: #126 - Wake Up 2007: #3 - No Cars Go 2007: #5 - Intervention 2007: #19 - Keep The Car Running 2010: #9 - Ready To Start 2017: #13 - Signs of Life 2017: #18 - Everything Now 2017: #113 - Creature Comfort
* - some years' charts were statistical, and thus songs whose chart runs spanned multiple years may appear twice.

25 - 21
25: Kings Of No Hope - The Stereo (#2, March)
Googling this pop-rock act lead me to find that they were around 20 years ago before reforming this year - this is their FragChart debut.
24: 5 Days On (2 Days Off) - Kid Kapichi (#2, August)
As you might guess, this concerns the weekly grind - sure to resonate with anyone who's found themselves unsatisfied at work.
Previous appearances: 2020: #115 - Household Shame 2022: #106 - I.N.V.U.
23: Vex Machine - The Subways (#1, November)
"My baby's a T*ry, it's the end of our story" - the Subways back to their best and achieving a new peak with this energetic song, the B-Side to 'Black Wax'.
Previous appearances: 2005: #35 - Oh Yeah 2005: #127 - Rock And Roll Queen 2005: #138 - With You 2005: #96 - No Goodbyes 2006: #113 - No Goodbyes 2006: #144 - Rock And Roll Queen 2022: #45 - Black Wax
22: Hate To See You Tortured - The Blinders (#2, February)
"I wouldn't say I'm depressed, but every morning on my way to work I hope the car does crash into a ditch" This expression of depression was a slow-burner for me, starting off going 50-54 before climbing all the way to #2 in the space of three weeks.
21: I Sold My Soul - Remix - Tir Nan Og (#1, July)
Now for something completely different - a Bavarian-Irish folk band singing about drinking (what else?). Not to be confused with Tír na nÓg, an Irish folk band from the 70s.

20 - 16
20: Won’t Stand Down - Muse (#1, January)
Muse enter the year-end top 20 for the first time since 2010, and the 10th overall. The screamy bit at the end prevented this one from being higher.
Previous appearances*: 2001: #4 - Bliss 2001: #27 - New Born 2001: #28 - Plug In Baby 2001: #69 - Hyper Music 2001: #135 - Feeling Good 2002: #7 - Dead Star 2002: #11 - In Your World 2002: #54 - Feeling Good 2002: #152 - Hyper Music 2003: #4 - Time Is Running Out 2003: #113 - Hysteria 2004: #10 - Hysteria 2004: #79 - Sing For Absolution 2006: #1 - Knights Of Cydonia 2006: #18 - Starlight 2006: #35 - Supermassive Black Hole 2007: #7 - Map Of The Problematique 2007: #28 - Invincible 2009: #27 - Uprising 2009: #46 - Undisclosed Desires 2010: #7 - Resistance 2010: #90 - Neutron Star Collision 2017: #34 - Dig Down 2018: #30 - Pressure 2018: #106 - The Dark Side 2018: #109 - Thought Contagion 2018: #124 - Something Human 2021: #24 - Citizen Erased (XX Anniversary RemiXX) 2022: #27 - Will Of The People
19: Peoples Champ - Lawmaker (#7, May)
The only Lawmaker hit to date not to make either #1 or #2, but that's the company the People's Champ is keeping here - a tune about the popular underdog.
Previous appearance: 2022: #29 - Tooth & Claw
18: Ellen - Sitting on Stacy (#2, March)
Chart debut and only hit to date for this SoCal "wack rock" three-piece, reminiscent of The Randells, who had a few highly-placed hits last year.
17: Alone Again (Naturally) - The Dollyrots (#1, June)
This is a punk cover of Gilbert O'Sullivan's 1971 song, and much less depressing for it.
Previous appearance: 2019: #6 - Everything
16: Like A Drug - BRKN LOVE (#3, April)
Like Royal Blood? You'll enjoy these Canadian rockers, who are the best newcomers this year behind Lawmaker. Still more to come from them.
Previous appearances (all 2022): #134 - Little Black Box #69 - Forever's Enough #65 - Fever Dream

Are you putting a Spotify playlist of the full chart up when you get to #1?

Are you putting a Spotify playlist of the full chart up when you get to #1? Yep! It's not a private playlist, so can be sourced from my profile if you want spoilers :-)
