I'll start with arguably the ultimate example of this. The word hate is far too strong, but I reckon no one in the history of popular music comes close to reaching so far beyond their own generic sound (of schlocky, corny country pop balladry).

Take That - Back For Good
A band with an extensive catalogue of pop hits that at the very best are mediocre, with this one brilliant track as an exception. Makes no sense, but there you are.

I feel like that about Take That, but with 'Patience' and 'Rule The World'. I can tolerate 'Back For Good' but everything else they've done can GTFO

I feel like that about Take That, but with 'Patience' and 'Rule The World'. I can tolerate 'Back For Good' but everything else they've done can GTFO I like Shine and Up All Night. Of the earlier ones I like their covers of Could It Be Magic and Relight My Fire and also A Million Love Songs, Pray and Never Forget. Take That songs I don't like are Babe, Everything Changes and Sure. Not enough though to put them into this category. For me the artist that always fitted this category perfectly was Eminem, who spent 7 weeks at NM #1 with "Stan" whilst all his other flopped, even "My Name Is" and "Lose Yourself". But then he got himself a second NM #1 17 years later with "Walk On Water". Following those "River" reached my top 20 and he'd also reached my top 20 as part of D12 with "My Band" in 2004. Whilst Donny Osmond's solo singles of the 1970s all flopped, the Osmonds as a group charted with most of their singles, "Crazy Horses" was the biggest hit peaking at #2 (Crocodile Rock kept it off the top), and they had other top 10 hits too (One Bad Apple, Down By The Lazy River, Goin' Home), so they definitely don't qualify for this.

Never Forget is Take That's best song for me, but I think they've done quite a few decent ones to be honest.

Where Is The Love? by The Black Eyed Peas is perfect for this category. Excellent track, but everything else they did was horrible.

I preferred "Shut Up" to "Where Is The Love"
A one hit wonder in my chart who was big in the UK was Jason Derulo. Strangely his only NM hit "Kiss The Sky" was a flop in the UK. Peaked at NM #6.

Maroon 5 - Harder To Breathe
First song of theirs I heard (their debut single) and gave me very unrealistic expectations of everything to come.
