Sad news from a group which knew its fair share of tragedy...
...this is their masterpiece...

If rock historians had to compile a list of music acts most screwed over by the record industry ... The Shangri La's would comfortably find a place in the top ten (Badfinger would be nailed on at #1)... Snubbed by the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame yet their influence on pop culture is enormous Their first hit "Remember (Walkin In The Sand) hit big in the spring of 1964 at the height of Beatlemania; as a result the no hit Supremes, thanks to Motown writers/producers Holland-Dozier-Holland suggested (according to Florence Ballard) to the Motown female trio to sing like the Shangri-La's in dead pan/sarcastic manner on their 10th single "Where Did Our Love Go" ... resulting in their first of 12 USA #1 hits.. The first UK punk single, The Damned "New Rose", began with singer Dave Vanian asking: “Is she really going out with him?”, a line nicked from the spoken-word intro of "Leader of the Pack". Similarly The New York Dolls swiped Weiss’s sneering spoken-word intro to "Give Him a Great Big Kiss" on the opening track of their debut album. Quite simply Blondie would not have existed... Hell "Rip Her To Shreds" & "In The Flesh" are defacto Shangri-La's tunes ... not least as the Shangri-La's recorded/covered them in 1977 for Sire records on a shelved comeback album recording. Ditto recent Rock & Roll Hall Of Famers The Go-Go's www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiNmzel65goOne could argue All Saints "Never Ever" is the best Shangri-La's single never made; or argue Amy Winehouse "Back To Black" is the best Shangri-La's single never made.. not least as she named "I Can Never Go Home Anymore" as the saddest record ever made; which producer Mark Ronson said (alongside Remember (Walkin' In The Sand) was a major inspiration for the title track of Amy's 2nd album, easily one of the top ten albums of the 21st century... and that's without mentioning their similarly criminally underrated 00s UK act The Pipettes... Fast forward to 2024 and a slowed down Lana Del Rey/Billie Eilish wannabe cover of their "Dressed In Black" was used on the the BBC Reality TV S2 water cooler zeitgeist "The Traitors" only this week FFS .... RIP Mary Weiss IMHO their masterpiece was The Shangri-La's - Past, Present and Future A Mary Weiss spoken word monologue that seemed to suggest its protagonist had been abused or raped to Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata...

George Morton was their producer, he co-wrote their big hits with Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich. Shangri-Las as such were just the vocal group.
Of course the line "Is she really going out with him" inspired a song for Joe Jackson (who, according to wikipedia heard the phrase from the Damned song not Leader Of The Pack). It's likely they cleared with the songwriters whether they had to pay to use it. I guess Ellie Greenwich was most likely the one who wrote the line and decided not to bother to collect royalties.

I've always been partial to their version of I'm Blue:
Insane to think they only really had two albums released within the same year (!). They really made a big impact on popular culture despite their brief run.
RIP Mary. I had no idea she had released a solo album in 2007, I might have to track that down.
