Chris Nicholl played football for Aston Villa, Southampton and Northern Ireland. A latecomer to the professional game, he earned the first of his 51 caps at the age of 28. He later managed Southampton, giving debuts to Alan Shearer and Matthew Le Tissier. As a kid, I occasionally spent mornings during the summer holidays running around the car park at The Dell, grabbing autographs and photographs of my heroes who played for Southampton. Chris Nicholl was a stalwart elder statesman of the team at the time, marshalling the central defence, and scoring the occasional goal from corners. His death at the age of 77 came after several years with dementia. In a moment of reflection, I dug out this photo of Chris. He was getting his kit out of the boot of his Austin Maxi, and poked his tongue out at me as I clicked the shutter. It takes me back to my innocent, fun-filled childhood, and I wanted to post this as a small tribute to a person who entertained me in my youth. RIP

In 1976 he managed the unusual feat of scoring all 4 goals in a 2-2 draw (playing for Aston Villa v Leicester City). RIP
