I mean, why didn't he keep it for Coldplay?
I think it's such an amazing track, it really grows on you, can you imagine it sung by Chris Martin?
I think that if recorded by Coldplay, it would have been their biggest hit so far...

I guess he's a kind guy and still gets some of the royalties?

I think the track is more suited to Embrace. Also as Andy says I think it was a genuine act of kindness - I think Embrace had been pigeonholed by the music industry and possibly even where their own label is concerned when it comes to Embrace's single releases. I think the money men probably allowed a bit greter diversity because of Chris Martin's name alone. Whether consciously or not Chris is developing a name as a songwriter - so it won't have doen him any harm either.
I suspect Coldplay are avoiding overkill by giving us all a rest for a year or so. Their songs were beginning to blur a bit for me.

I've heard the Coldplay version or at least Chris Martin singing it. It was really slow but still really good. Didn't Embrace give Coldplay a leg up?

Maybe either Chris Martin was inspired somewhat by Embrace or Coldplay supported them in their early days? I don't know...
Maybe Chris Martin felt sorry for Embrace that they'd never had an NM #1 yet...

Maybe Chris Martin felt sorry for Embrace that they'd never had an NM #1 yet... This seems the most likely reason to me. I hear Morrissey is writing for Geri and Clint Boon is penning Tiffany's new track for the same reason...

I think that song's wicked. I thought I had heard it before though, and knew some of the words already, but I don't know how.

Close, Clint Boon wrote for Ant & Dec.
The might Shack had a big NM hit "Comedy" in 1999. It peaked at NM #2, kept out by the Auteurs "The Rubettes" and was narrowly pipped to #1 by that in a close contest. But later on the Shack single refused to leave the chart, then started climbing back up and remained in the chart for 14 consecutive weeks, finishing 5th on the chart of the year (above the Auteurs).

I like the Auteurs, I have 2 of their albums

I have the album "how I learned to love the boot boys" but I didn't listen to it that many times. Saw them live twice in 1999 too, once being at the Leeds rock festival.
I don't actually know any of their stuff prior to 1999. Prior to 1998 I generally only followed the top 40 like many of the posters on here.

Both I really like, I didn't pick them up again in 1999
