It was great to see indie songs doing so well at the start of the year, yes I know sales are low, I dont care, Snow Patrol, Keane and Franz Ferdinand all having top 5 hits, bloody brilliant, let's hope it happens at the start of 2006 as well.

And at the beginning of 2005... Yes, this sort of thing happens at the start of every year - fewer releases and if only the indie acts would take advantage more. Keane didn't release though until 16 February and still got a top 3 hit, then a big smash album. Yes, indie acts tend to do better in the album chart (acts like Eric Prydz may get #1 singles but won't normally shift many albums). In 2003, the album chart was dominated by Easy Listening / Jazz. Thus Norah Jones, Katie Melua, Jamie Cullum etc. You mentioned the pop-idols, but Will Young's second album sold well, and Lemar seems to have worked out that if you want a successful career, the key is releasing good material. Being on a reality TV show can help you make the break, but the future is up to you...

My surprises of the year: Razorlight being as successful as they have been The number of new alternative acts making the top 40
