I like all kinds of music in all kinds of genres and when somebody asks me what I think is 'good' music I tell them, music that makes me feel good, or that I can understand that it makes somebody else feel good, is for me the definition of 'good' music.
Whats your definition of 'good' music?

Talk about a loaded question! I'll pass as it's far too subjective. I think at a simple level if it makes you feel good is an OK way to put it, but there's plenty of great music that surely doesn't make you feel good, it just is good (Joy Division etc).... And even then it's not true... Club music (proper club music) makes me feel good, but it's often bland and samey and I wouldn't call it good music.... am I making any sense here? nevermind - what I consider to be good music is on my Radio Station. Final Answer!!

To be simple catchy pop music. I am not in to all this boring rock music at that practically everyone on the planet seems to love eg Keane.

Great question that is very hard to answer, I like a good beat, but love indie music as well...my tastes are varied and good music to one is crap music to another, your definition dendanna sounds quite good...

Hi, dendanna, Talking about definitions is looking for something that's general and largely applicable. Yet, from the start you are defining 'good' using individual criteria, centred on what feels good for you as an individual.
In fact, what you like can be good for you and bad in general, and what is considered good in general, could appear very bad to you and viceversa.
To complicate the things even more, what feels good now, could appear quite a bore later, and what you hate now, could prove really good in the longterm.
What an individual considers good is function of many things: personal taste and preferences, past experience, personality, education, influences from friends and family, etc. So, it is very personal. It also changes during once's life...
What is good in general, could be what will be able to withstand the time perhaps?

Generally it needs to have a good tune or good lyrics or preferably both, but you can get away with one.
Also needs to be well performed.
Taking one snippet from a song, sticking behind it a production that makes it sound monotonous, and looping it continuously is NOT good music. Yes, Eric Prydz, that includes you.

I'm sorry - but...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhahahahHAHAHAHAHAHA I know what you are trying to say, but Keane is by far the most Pop band to come from Indie-Land in a very long time (likely never to happen again I would guess). They are also very catchy and simple (too much so for most people in fact). Maybe Coldplay or Radiohead would have been a better example for you?

In my opinion, what makes a song good, is the vocal performance. I like Mariah, Celine, Whitney and all the rest because vocally, they are superb. I'm not a great fan of a lot of indie/rock-pop bands because, although they may be talented players and have good lyrics, in general, the vocals are naff. Yes, it's the style of music to sing off-key, and if you like that, then no disrespect to you. There are exceptions - for example the man in Rasmus can sing, I like them. Chris Martin on the other hand sings every note flat - I don't like Coldplay.
In general, I wouldn't consider a lot of cheese and dance music to be 'good' - however, I do think it's enjoyable, and have plenty of it in my collection.

Yeah - definately an each to their own here. What I can't stand about the Mariah, Celine, Whitney, etc is their voice. Not to mention they only have a good voice and rarely write anything themselves (if at all).
Are there any groups you like that make their own songs?

Good Music = Song with a grt voice with a melody which will haunt ur mind n u got a spirit of feeling good when u hear it. Such music should be able to make u have a sense of emotion when u hear it, either ur smiling broadly or a single tear coming to ur eyes but not at all a sense of anger!!!

Mariah has written everything (apart from the few covers of course) she's ever done - the lyrics are entirely her own work, while the music is a joint effort. The Corrs, Alisha's Attic, Del Amitri, Ace of Base and The Cranberries are all bands I like, and would consider to be 'good' music, and they write their own stuff.

Good music to me is music i can listen without smashing the TV up heh ya i like that definition ya i guess good music for me would probably cover a pretty broad scope... so ill just say as long as they dont fall under these 2 categories 1) bad music: selfexplanatory -music that makes you cringe...so bad that it can pretty much make you feel physically ill when you listen to it (no redeeming qualities) ahem*creed*ahem 2) blah music: music that you hear and dont really hate, but doesnt get you excited either... or you cant really appreciate it all that much cuz you know its prepackaged and no amount of creative process was put in it ... or you think its alright for awhile, but wears out its welcome v. quickly so if it's not either of those, id probably consider it good as for music i love... that's another story =]
