"Kaisers Chiefs are being lined up to write the official England World Cup song. Ricky Wilson and the boys could follow in the footsteps of New Order, Ant & Dec and Fat Les by recording the official theme for the World Cup in Germany this summer.
However, the Chiefs will be facing stiff competition for the accolade from the likes of Wayne Rooney’s brother James who is composing a rap in the style of the John Barnes one from New Order’s World In Motion. Hot new guitar sensations The Arctic Monkeys are also tipped to be in with a shout.
A spokesperson for the Football Association told the News Of The World that they’re “not ruling the Kaiser Chiefs out” at this stage."

Kaiser statement:
We're flattered about these rumours regarding the England football team's World Cup song, but there's no truth in them, they are just rumours. The only writing we'll be doing in the next few months will be for our next album. We have no plans to write the England football team's World Cup song. Sorry to dispel the myth."

Lol 98 England Utd - dire compilation of Ocean Colour Scene and a few other bands with the Spice Girls 02 Ant and Dec Lightning Seeds was an official 96 European Championship thing but re-released with changed lyrics for 98.

ugh - so the only 2 decent ones were lightning seeds and new order (and the new order song was just a rewrite if i remember correctly?).
ok.. as this myth is dispelled - let's come up with some titles that whoever writes the song can use.... a few thoughts are:
- 2 world wars and 1 world cup (with a refrain of '5 to 1!') - You can ban us but we don't care as we're louts - we used to be good at football - Do the Yanks have to be ranked higher than us?
sorry..in a funny mood...lol

actually... it will be this... DJ stands up for England ] Mar 10 2006 ] By Thomas Sieber, Chester Chronicle ] ] ] ] A CHESTER DJ and music producer is aiming for number ] one this summer ] after teaming up with the England Supporters Band. ] ] Chris Rodgers, 24, has got the group, whose brass ] instruments have ] become an increasing feature at England matches, to ] agree to perform ] on his World Cup song. ] ] Stand Up (Sing With Me) is an adaptation of the ] James classic Sit ] Down and the team behind the record, released by ] Chester-based ] Off:Side Records, has been asked by the Football ] Association to enter ] it as a possibility for the Official World Cup song. ] ] ] Rights for the track were secured only last week and ] the lyrics are ] being reworked by James frontman Tim Booth. ] ] Chris, who also found out he will become a father ] this week, ] said: 'The original idea came from Simon Lewis, of ] the Gate Filming ] Company, who is producing the video for us and it ] just works so, so ] well.' ] ] ] ] The revised lyrics for the chorus read 'England, ] England, England, ] Stand up next to me' and Chris thinks the song has a ] meaning beyond ] football: 'It is all about being proud to be ] English.' ] ] ] Chris is still approaching singers to perform the ] chorus on the ] record. He said: 'I'm not looking to bring in anyone ] particularly ] famous. What I want is the right sort of voice for ] the song.' ] ] ] Sections of the video were shot outside Chester's ] Deva Stadium on ] Saturday, despite Chester City's game being ] postponed. ] ] ] * Stand Up (Sing With Me) has its official launch in ] Chester on March ] 30. Some of the proceeds from the record will go to ] the charities ] Love Music Hate Racism and Bullying Online. More ] information is ] available online at www.worldcupanthem.com. doubt I'll ever like that song again after all the exposure it will get... but was always my least favorite famous song of theirs...

That song may have made James the band they are, but also a joke band in the process . That band was called The Farm, "All Together Now" got re-hashed for the Euro 2004 song. That 1998 one was dreadful, Ian McColloch sinking to a new low and letting himself down badly .
