Westlife have a new Album coming out in November. I am not a Fan, I hate them.
To prove what 'creative talent' (LOL), they have, it is called, 'The Love Album', & it is out in November. It consists of 13 Covers.
These include, 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart', & Honey', the 1968 Bobby Goldsboro Number 2, (also Number 2 in 1975). Westlife call it, 'Honey (I Miss You'), & it will be one of the Singles off it. They have also recorded the old 1980 Air Supply Hit, 'All Out Of Love', which will be another Single off it - as a Duet with the Australian, Delta Goodrem. The old Chicago Hit, 'Hard To Say I'm Sorry', will also be on it . As will, an old Garth Brooks Song, 'The Dance', which be a 3rd Single off their Album. It also has the 1977 Debbie Boone Hit, 'You Light Up my LIfe', on it, & the old Commodores Hit, 'Easy' - which Lionel Richie is rumoured to be dueting with them on.
The other 6 Songs on the Album, will be 'revealed' tomorrow. I wonder if they will all be old Ballads?! (LOL). After all, the 7 that we already know are!
So, what is clever, & talented, about 4 Val(ium) Doonican copiests, who do almost nothing but ballads, & who would not have been out of place, with their Act, in the 1950's? Who turn to Covers whenever they think that are not selling as many Singles as they used to?
I regard them as the most talentless Act in UK Chart History. (Yes - and I AM counting The Wurzels!).
They are only truly huge - consistently - in the UK & Ireland. Everywhere else they have some big hits, then a lot of minor or small Hits.....
They bring a whole new meaning to, the saying, 'Money For Old Rope'.....

All recent hits have been covers, ever since "Hey Whatever", which is actually a cover despite changed lyrics from the Relish original.

I say fair play, they sell bucketloads and do tours and such, yes they're bland and generic, but obviously people love that.

All recent hits have been covers, ever since "Hey Whatever", which is actually a cover despite changed lyrics from the Relish original. I listened to the Relish original last night, called "Rainbow Zephyr", and thought how different and meaningful the original lyrics are!.

I don't know how releasing an ablum of covers makes you not talented though. In recent years, we have seen Simply Red, George Michael and Robbie Williams (among others) release albums of cover songs, and I hope no one would say that either of those aren't talented, so your logic just doesn't hold up.
They are a tad bland, but they can sing, they can hold their melodies well, and they are hugely successful. They may not be 'cool', but the sales speak for themselves.

Simply Red, Robbie Williams, & George Michael have all written many Top 10 Hits by themselves, as well as doing covers.
How many of their 13 UK Number 1 Singles have Westlife written?
My logic holds up very well. Westlife get nearly every new song written for them, & everytime they feel they need a boost to their Career, they Cover something - 'Mandy', 'You Raise Me Up', & now an entire Album of Covers. (It is called taking the easy way out. Relying on getting Hits, by recording stuff that have been Hits before). In no way can this compare to the far more creative talents of Robbie, Simply Red, & George Michael. Oh, & another thing about Westlife. They have had 5 UK Number 1 Albums, & have yet to spend more than 1 Week on Top with any of them. The only 2 Countries where they have several - consistent - Number 1's, are the UK & Ireland. Ireland is one of the smallest Music Markets on Earth.
Any Group who record almost nothing but slow ballads and/or covers, are not clever, not very talented, & not going to go down in Pop History as one of the greats. They may as well be a Val Doonican Tribute Act!
The biggest Record Market on the Continent of Europe is Germany. Westlife have spent just 3 Weeks in the German Top 10 - all 3 with 'Uptown Girl'. It reached Number 8. They are not even in the Top 150 German Chart Acts. (The Beatles are 1st - 302 Top 10 Weeks, & ABBA are 3rd - 239 Top 10 Weeks. Westlife are not even in the same league!).
In the UK, Westlife have had 20 Top 5 Hits - 13 at Number 1, & 65 Weeks in the Top 10. They are the 34th Top Singles Chart Act. (The Beatles are 3rd, ABBA are 9th).
If you give Points for every, (Weekly), UK Album Position, Westlife end up as the 130th All Time UK Album Act. As a contrast, an Act like ABBA are 11th & The Beatles are 1st. Sorry, but Westlife get high in the UK Charts, but do not actually sell as many Records as the true all time greats. One day they may write some of their own UK Number 1 Hits - but I won't hold my breath.
I hope their Covers Album gets the Reviews it deserves - for being a lazy, cash in.....
