Two very similar but beautiful records out at the moment - and neither the usual chart fare. Both are from Ireland (or Northern Ireland) and are very atmospheric with a female vocal. Which is the better one? I have to think about that one.

"Set The Fire To The Third Bar" is my fave out of those. I just really like the contrast between Gary and Martha's voices, although "9 Crimes" is very good too but not one of Damien Rice's best IMO.

Snow Patrol by a long way. Damien's is good but Snow Patrol's is something else. It's easily one of the best songs I've heard all year and should make my top 5/10 singles of the year!

went with snow patrol. this is the only song i like much from their album. Damien Rice's song is a bit bland in comparison...

The funny thing is that there is a new compilation that I think it's called the Cake Sale, with a lot of Irish artists... and there is a duet between Lisa (the girl who sings 9 Crimes with Damien) and the guy from Snow PAtrol!!!!!!
By the way, Damien and Lisa have lots of better 'duets' or songs singing together. Just check Cold Water or I Remember or Volcano!!! and she also sings at the end of The Blower's Daughter!!

Both are amazing, that's all there is to it.
Damien's is a grower but I suspect there's better still on the album. Snow Patrol are lifted immensely by the presence of Martha Wainwright and it's easily the best thing on their album.

Just realised that 9 Damien's new album is out tomorrow. Strange releasing well before the single. Couple of reviews - an excellent one first from the Telegraph: Damien Rice 9 14th Floor, £12.99
So here it is: the second album from the Irish singer and songwriter whose debut album, O, released four years ago, bowled us over with its glorious emotional peaks and troughs and the fragile beauty of his voice.
And the good news is that it's every bit as powerful as its predecessor, a succession of haunting, haunted snapshots of a troubled man and his troubled life, against a backdrop of acoustic guitars, double bass, brushed drums and dusty piano, giving way occasionally to full rock-out regalia – remnants, perhaps, of the "heavier" album he originally set out to make.
And the bad news? Well, there isn't any, except this: it's painfully, wincingly honest, a merciless exercise in naked, unfiltered soul-baring – never gauche or self-pitying, but overflowing with sorrow for his own broken heart ("I cover my eyes, still all I see is you") and for the fractured hearts of others.
Its release comes at just that point in the year when the yearning takes hold to turn down the lights, turn down the blinds against the sharp night air, pour a glass of something warming, and listen to something that will bring tears to our eyes and an ache to our hearts. This is the very thing. David ChealBut not such a good one from The Guardian, only 2 stars given A heartbreak album for those who weep along to vintage Radiohead and Leonard Cohen rather than George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Damien Rice's 2002 debut, titled 0, was multi-platinum balm for the newly dumped. His second album finds him no longer trembling on the brink of romantic meltdown, but wallowing in the deepest pit of despair. He quivers, moans and pleads in obsessive contemplation of the darling departed in a self-dramatising simulation of catharsis that wrings from his performances an ocean of emotion when a drop of understated restraint would prove more telling. Cellist Vyvienne Long and singer Lisa Hannigan again achingly upholster Rice's ho-hum strums, and again the last track, Sleep Don't Weep, has an old-hat trick ending. But Accidental Babies spotlights the essence of his appeal: you don't write red-raw words like these unless you're for real. Damien Rice is that rare beast, a lamb in ham's clothing. I'll still get it though as I'm loving 9 Crimes at the mo:

Darn, was going to get the SP album but if it's easily the best thing I'll save me pennies - as I can hear the single anytime. ;D
