Oh quite a lot of their later stuff was really dark. Should check out their 'Swastika eyes' era stuff.. I remember Depeche Mode's 'Barrel of a Gun' written about his drug induced near death experience - that was very bleak and menacing for a top 5 single.

While we're talking about Primal Scream, what about Miss Lucifer, both song and vid!

"To Here Knows When" by My Bloody Valentine Suppose it can be scary to kids, but really I think that song's beautiful, I lose myself in it every time I hear it.

never found either of those smiths songs scary - 'girlfriend in a coma' makes me laugh! but if you want scary smiths, try listening to 'suffer little children' (about the moors murders) or 'the hand that rocks the cradle', which is a DELIGHTFULLY jolly ditty about child abuse... i would go for 'lullaby' by the cure, since i'm not sure either of those were even singles, much less top 40 hits...

Body Count - Cop Killer.
A great song at the time of the riots after the Beating of Rodney King, but very scary and so real.

Rammstein - Feuer Frei. Sounds like they're going to eat you up...

Actually, I think the scariest Top 40 hit ever has to be The Special AKA's "The Boiler" - #35 in 1982. Anyone who's heard it will know why.

"Ghost Town" by The Specials I found quite eerie upon first listen of it.

Prince Charming - Adam and the Ants. All that shouting at the start of the song is enough to scare anybody, then in the video Diana Dors appears,so that's enough to make anybody run away.

Britney Spears - Everytime And I'm being serious - . For such a commercial artist it was a very dark, eerie song which hints at the madness and obsession later.

Jesus and Mary Chain - Reverence
Haven't heard it for years, and have no intention of finding it now. I'm still shocked on release in Feb 1992 that it reached the Top 10!

Didn't that have a blasphemous lyric? Haven't heard it for ages.

Didn't that have a blasphemous lyric? Haven't heard it for ages. Yep, "I wanna die in the USA, I wanna die like JFK, I wanna die like Jesus Christ", and that got banned. Another one I wish to nominate, which I'm hearing right now: Massive Attack - Risingson

Well it is a very sinister sounding track that would definitely frighten kids (who probably won't have heard Tomorrow Never Knows by The Beatles) and particularly grandparents, and especially that first vocal from Noel near the start aswell.
