I've placed a £1 each way bet on Spot the Difference at 50/1.
Not exactly going to be retiring on any winnings but would be nice if it came in the top 4.

we always do a family bet on the grand national - everyone picks a couple of horses, and the one who has the best finish (i.e. the best-finishing of their two) is paid 5 francs (£2 or so) by the others. last year, my mum was the only one of us to have a horse actually making the finish line

Its quite complicated if you bet 'each way'. £1 each way means a £2 bet, but its based on a pay out for £1. Basically if the horse finished first the bookies pay out for the full odds, if 2nd they pay out for half the odds, if 3rd I think its a third of the odds, and they sometimes pay out for 4th at a quarter of the initial odds if there's enough horses running.

We bet on Gunner Welburn last year, and he came third or something... might put some money on GW again this year!

do they still have betting taxes?
if they do make sure you pay your tax when placing your bet. otherwise youll have to pay taxes when collecting your winnings which could amount to a lot mor pennies
