Firstly, though they're not my team for Sunderland losing last yeasterday... I live in a town which lies halfway between Newcastle and Sunderland, so the town is split 50-50 between supporters of both clubs. Most of the time the banter between rival supporters is humourous but when one of the teams is involved in a big match the atmosphere can get a bit dodgy. Yesterday being a prime example... the pubs near my house, one is known as a Newcastle pub and one is known as a Sunderland pub. During the match all the Sunderland supporters headed to, naturally, the pub known as the Sunderland pub and the Newcastle supporters headed to the other pub. After the match, people moved on to Wetherspoons for an after-match cheap drink. You can guess the rest... most of my mates are Sunderland supporters and during the trouble that erupted (who has ever heard of pitched battles in a Wetherspoons?) two of them ended up getting beaten up The trouble then started again when the supporters coaches arrived back from Old Trafford late yesterday and last night the main street near where I lived looked like Baghdad with lots of police, a lot of fighting and people diving for cover. The police had to close the pub I was in at 10pm last night as the bar staff refused to work and the police feared there was going to be further trouble. What fun

Bloody hell, sounds like a dramatic evening of beer and violence! Were the Sunderland fans looking for a fight after losing or were the Newcastle fans taunting them?

Bloody hell, sounds like a dramatic evening of beer and violence! Were the Scumderland fans looking for a fight after losing or were the Newcastle fans taunting them? It was initially Newcastle fans doing the taunting but as the day wore on and the drinks went down it became half and half. Unfortunately, when fights break out they seem to cause more fights and take on a life of their own until people just start fighting for the sake of it

Sounds like a Wild West style fight in the local saloon!!! One person throws a punch, and before you know it everyone's at it!

I've been in a pub before when that's happened, even the bar staff joined in! Last night was more a case of fights starting up every so often as people got wound up more and more as the night wore on

I absolutely detest Football Hooligans... when I was getting the train home one Saturday evening there were some arseholes from Pompey starting fights at Waterloo station. Police and ambulance called, trains delayed and they had to shut down several of the fast food joints as all the staff there were scared for their lives..... To be honest, it's one of the main reasons why I'm not really a football fan!

To be honest violence is pretty much restricted to certain clubs. We rarely have trouble at or around Notts' ground.
