I heard they were after Steve McClaren at Boro? He'd be mad to leave as Boro seem a force this year... Now I hear it is Steve Bruce they are after, again, he'd be mad to leave Brum who did well last year and could do well again, plus the compo Newcastle would have to pay would be HUGE, and surely they had to pay Sir Bobby off? I thought they were strapped for cash? Personally, I think it is a HUGE cockup! Can you really sack your manager this soon into the season... Same goes for Southampton, they only installed Sturrock from Plymouth at the end of last season, and he's gone already, cos the director wants Sir Clive Woodward for the job! Surely it's the wrong shaped balls?

Andy - me and Neil were having this discussion Monday and he did say that if they had Gazaa, they'd have him to help with the training and some random person whose name I can't remember for the other stuff. BTW, has Sturrock got a job yet or not?

I've got a foot in both camps. The Tigers are my first love( let's not talk about today's result too much ). I was a student in Middlesbrough and spent many happy afternoons at Ayresome. Looks like Venables is on his way to the North East- wasnt he managing an Australian club called Newcastle?. My guess is Shearer will replace him in 2 years.

Shepherd and Lowe have indeed done themselves NO favours with their recent handling of affairs at their respective clubs. If I were Bruce/Venables/O'Leary etc I'd hardly be enthralled at the prospect at working under a man such as Shepherd...

Steve Bruce says that he's staying with the Blues, according to Sky... Dont blame him at all! I heard O leary was fave, but he's at villa, so they'd need compo! I think they'll go with venabales, but that is a mistake...

Souness quits Blackburn for Newcastle job Mon 06 Sep, 11:43 AM
LONDON (Reuters) - Graeme Souness has been appointed manager of Newcastle United after resigning from Blackburn Rovers where he had been in charge since 2000.
Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd told Sky Sports News on Monday: "Graeme Souness leaves Blackburn Rovers today to take up the position of team manager at Newcastle United."
Shepherd said Souness, 51, would take seven days "gardening leave" and officially take charge on Monday September 13.
Newcastle sacked former England manager Bobby Robson last Monday
The "gardening leave" would have nothing to do with the fact we play Blackburn on Saturday of course...

I think that is a daft appointment! I mean he has hardly set the world on fire there has he, I can see Blackburn facing the drop this season... As for him sorting out the discipline prob, well surely by sacking robson, the chairman has handed power to the players? As for your defence, you cant buy anyone til the transfer windown can you?

We're stuck with the same defenders until middle Jan at the earliest... I think we're gonna struggle unless one of the defenders actually decides to defend...

Hmm, possibly not a bad appointment but it rather looks as if they've been rushed into making it. The lack of discipline and the lack of a defence will need to be sorted out fairly sharpish. However, I can't help feeling that by buying players such as Bowyer, Dyer and Kluivert they've rather created their own problems in relation to the former point.
