It just shows how desperate we Brits are when we are celebrating a tennis player making the world's top 100.
Andy beat Robin Soderling of Sweden ranked in the top 50 and will enter the top 100 when the rankings are published next week. More importantly, he will get direct acceptance into the Australian Open next January.
Even more pathetic, BBC Ceefax even gave live updates on the score.
I don't know just how far up he can go but I genuinely believe he might win a Slam in years to come which is the first time I have felt this of a Brit since Jo Durie. (Unfortunately she didn't).
It's great to feel that there is a Brit to support now.

That IS good news... I don't think UK men's tennis has been that bad over the last decade with Henman and Rudeski. The women's game another matter.

Great news! I'm convinced he's the real deal, but whether he will have the consistency that Heman has had over the last few years is another question

Great news! I'm convinced he's the real deal, but whether he will have the consistency that Heman has had over the last few years is another question It is far too early to start making predictions but I genuinely believe the talent is there that could take him to a Slam - probably the US on hard courts. I never felt that Henman had the mental capacity to win a Slam nor would Rusedski but of the two there was always just a little hope at the back of my mind that if Greg's serve caught fire he might just confound us all.

This is great news. Further proof if any were needed that he's going to be a top player in years to come. Various people have mentioned about his so called stamina problem, but on 5 Live at the US Open they mentioned that because he's only 18 they couldn't do the necessary fitness work because he's stil growing. I expected him to make the Top 100 by the end of the year after seeing him at Wimbledon. The best thing is I'm sure he will do better outside Wimbledon than either Henman or Rusedski managed.

And I've just heard that he's beaten US Open semi-finalist Robby Ginepri in 3 sets. What an astonishing result! Well done Andy Murray!

i'm very wary of so much hype, and i feel sorry for the guy having to play every single match even at this early stage in his career with millions of anxious brits breathing down his neck... nevertheless, well done to the lad and i hope he goes far

Should be sometime on Saturday
Must say great for Andy Murray, its been amazing to see him progressing and getting better and better throughout these couple of years. First by winning a fair few junior events and now breaking into the top 100.
Just wish there was some womens success now...

And now he's through to the final.
It will be interesting to see how he measures up to Federer although in some ways I actually hope he loses - the hype already is ridiculous.

Its great - but I fear for the hype too.
I alos love the way he's suddenly become 'British' rather than 'Scottish' in the media now he's succesfsul. He'll be a Scot again as soon as he starts to lose (oh how cynical I am)

This is way out of line. It is not the second coming.
BBC is showing highlights of the final at 22.55 hrs tomorrow night.
Give the lad a chance.

But shouldn't he get the coverage? Surely people would moan if it was ignored? I hope he does ok tomorrow, whatever happens, he's 18 and playing the best player (at the mo) in the world, an amazing achievement.

Yes he deserves the coverage but already they are building up expectations. Anyway, with a name like that he's bound to be tops.
