Middlesborough 0-1 Stuttgart (2-2 agg)
Can't say I EVER remember an English team going through to the next round on this rule (I can of course remember numerous occasions on which an English team has gone out).

It's good that atleast one team from this country has made it into the next round, although i'd have put money on Bolton getting in over Middlesbrough

Even though Bolton were playing Marseilles? Boro-Roma will be an interesting tie! Not too much else of interest in what UEFA stupidly called the "First Knockout Round"

i'd have put money on Bolton getting in over Middlesbrough I wouldn't. We've been a different side in the cups this season. Before the games against Stuttgart, we hadn't conceded a goal in this season's UEFA Cup. The experience of last season has certainly helped. It did on Thursday. Last season, we would've panicked after the first goal went in, like we did against Sporting Lisbon. This time, however, we dug in and defended well for the remaining 80 minutes. Roma will be very tough though...

Hopefully Roma will be distracted by the league, as they make a late push for a Champions League spot.

It happened a few times during the 80s when English teams dominated.
Liverpool beat Bayern Munich on away goals in the 1981 semi-final. 0-0 at Anfield then 1-1 in Munich.
Tottenham also beat Hadjuk Split in the semi-finals of the 1984 UEFA cup on away goals: 1-2 away and 1-0 at home.
English clubs have also won on penalties a few times including Liverpool in both 1984 and 2005.

I remember Villa beating Inter on penalties about 10 years ago.
I remember Arsenal winning a shootout, with Seaman performing heroics.
